On this video I'll react to the recently released Netflix Trailer Queen Cleopatra. Here is a link to the original trailer I'm responding to.
• Queen Cleopatra | Offi...
Ptolemaic pharaohs were crowned by the Egyptian high priest of Ptah at Memphis, but resided in the multicultural and largely Greek city of Alexandria, established by Alexander the Great of Macedon. They spoke Greek and governed Egypt as Hellenistic Greek monarchs, refusing to learn the native Egyptian language. In contrast, Cleopatra could speak multiple languages by adulthood and was the first Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language. Plutarch implies that she also spoke Ethiopian, the language of the "Troglodytes", Hebrew (or Aramaic), Arabic, the Syrian language (perhaps Syriac), Median, and Parthian, and she could apparently also speak Latin, although her Roman contemporaries would have preferred to speak with her in her native Koine Greek. Aside from Greek, Egyptian, and Latin, these languages reflected Cleopatra's desire to restore North African and West Asian territories that once belonged to the Ptolemaic Kingdom.
Roman interventionism in Egypt predated the reign of Cleopatra. When Ptolemy IX Lathyros died in late 81 BCE, he was succeeded by his daughter Berenice III. However, with opposition building at the royal court against the idea of a sole reigning female monarch, Berenice III accepted joint rule and marriage with her cousin and stepson Ptolemy XI Alexander II, an arrangement made by the Roman dictator Sulla. Ptolemy XI had his wife killed shortly after their marriage in 80 BCE, but was lynched soon thereafter in the resulting riot over the assassination. Ptolemy XI, and perhaps his uncle Ptolemy IX or father Ptolemy X Alexander I, willed the Ptolemaic Kingdom to Rome as collateral for loans, so that the Romans had legal grounds to take over Egypt, their client state, after the assassination of Ptolemy XI. The Romans chose instead to divide the Ptolemaic realm among the illegitimate sons of Ptolemy IX, bestowing Cyprus on Ptolemy of Cyprus and Egypt on Ptolemy XII Auletes.
Cleopatra VII Philopator (Koinē Greek: Κλεοπάτρα Φιλοπάτωρ, "Cleopatra the father-beloved"; 70/69 BCE - 10 August 30 BCE) was Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51 to 30 BCE, and its last active ruler. A member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great.[note 6] After the death of Cleopatra, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, marking the end of the last Hellenistic state in the Mediterranean and of the age that had lasted since the reign of Alexander

We are living in a world that is rewriting history or erasing it! I live in Egypt, not Egyptian, but teaching here. I asked students to tell me who wrote Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty and so on. Their response was 'Disney' and all written in the US. I then told them where these stories had come from and told them of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Anderson. Slowly the European culture and history seems to be being taken over as the sole property of the US.

They argue it's hard to make those characters popular with the public, so rather than try it's easier to take an existing, already popular character and make them black. Which is stupid reasoning, because (a) while it's never a sure thing to take a new or less well known character (black or otherwise) and make them popular, it can be done - after all, that's how all characters start out, as unknowns to the audience; and (b) it's insulting to both the existing fans and to the people these "creators" claim to be trying to represent, because fans tend to want to see the thing they like adapted faithfully, not changed for no good reason, and its sending the message that black people only deserve white people's hand-me-downs. Like you said, there are lots of black historical women - and black historical men, and black fictional characters - who deserve to have their tales publicized to a wider audience. But the honest truth is that the people doing this don't really care about giving black people their own representation.

He became the progenitor of the dark races; NOT THE NEGROS, but the Egyptians, Ethiopians, Libyans and Canaanites.” The original Ham was dark brown. The present so-called Egyptians have been transplanted. Genesis 10:6-20 - And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. {10:7} And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. {10:8} And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. {10:9} He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. {10:10} And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. {10:11} Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, {10:12} And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city. {10:13} And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, {10:14} And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim. {10:15} And Canaan begat Sidon his first born, and Heth, {10:16} And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, {10:17} And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, {10:18} And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. {10:19} And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha. {10:20} These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

Even if Cleopatra were Egyptian (which she was not) that would not make her black. Egypt was invaded by the Sea Peoples, Libyans, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Greeks. None of whom were black. The Nubians were often mercenaries in the Egyptian army, but that does not mean they stayed in Egypt and intermarried with Egyptians. Many of the pieces of artwork that are often cited as evidence of Egyptians being black are often foreign mercenaries or conquered people coming to Egypt to pay tribute. There was a period that the Nubians ruled over Egypt, but that was many centuries before Cleopatra. The odds of her having any Nubian ancestry are extremely slim if not impossible since the Ptolomaic pharaohs only married other Greeks and usually their siblings.

I listened to "The Ancients" podcast that did an episode on Septimius Severus. The host started out thanking the expert for coming on, and telling him that the previous episode he was on was by far their most popular. Within the first…🤔3 minutes of the discussion, the guest informed the host that Septimius Severus was "born in North Africa, he was black, let me repeat that; he was a black emperor of Rome."🙄 No, he wasn't. Forget the fact that most North Africans, excluding the rare Berber, would not be what most would considered black for now. Severus could have been born in the heart of the Congo and he STILL wouldn't have been black. His father was Carthaginian, which would have made him of Phoenician decent. Phoenicians were semetic, like Arabs. His mother was as Roman as any Roman could be. I'm not talking about "Commodus declares everyone living within the boundaries of Rome are now Roman citizens" Roman. I mean italic, descended from one of the oldest Roman families still alive at the time. She was patrician, of which by the third century CE were few and far in between. As far as I know, with the exception of the Claudii*, patrician families trace their lineage back to the original pre-republican Roman Monarchial period: Romulus, Tarquinius, etc. So her family were Romans going back to the seventh century BCE, about as western European as you can get. I make no claims to being a geneticist or anthropologist, neither am I a historian, but last I checked: Arab+Western European does not equal black person. My issue isn't even whether he was black or not. My issue is that right out of the gate this historian present bullshit, and doubled down on it quite literally with the "let me repeat that: he was a black emperor" (his line, not mine). Everything I wrote is readily available online, all it takes is a quick Google search. So this "expert," either: A) was misinformed, which being an expert has all kinds of implications. Or B) was being duplicitous and just throwing inaccuracies out there to feed some agenda. I'll let you decide. *For extra credit: does anyone know of any other Patrician family that attained Patrician status AFTER the end of the monarchy besides the Claudian? I'm usually pretty adept at being able to find answers to questions online, but this one has stumped me for a while.

I'm on board with Metatron on this. We need to promote Aksum, Nubia, Mali, Ghana and all these amazing cultural periods of African history. I genuinely believe the 'woke' trend of Africanising history in the West will date soooo badly. It'll be the equivalent of John Wayne pulling his eyes back and playing Ghengis Khan. It will be so cringe and unbelievable people will ridicule all of us as if we all went along with it.

I agree movies and documentaries about actual black historical figures from Africa should be made. Instead of concentrating on famous people like Cleopatra and portraying them as black just to score some points, why not finally show someone less known or unknown but equally interesting? Why not make a movie or documentary that shows to everyone that African history isn't only about Egypt, that black people actually have rich and interesting history they can be proud of? That African Americans don't need to self-insert themselves into the history of other races in order to feel important because they have their own ancient history that's just as good as anyone's elses? No, the queen of Great Britain wasn't black, and Cleopatra was most likely tanned at best, but there were other queens, in African kingdoms, who actually were black, and they deserve the world to finally learn about them.

As an Egyptian who is proud to be African and Arab at the same time and as someone who studied for years Ancient Egyptian history, archaeology and the makeup of the Egyptian population since pre-historic times and throughout history, I'm so tired of being told that I'm not a true African and not a true Egyptian because I don't have "the right shade of black". Egypt was never a closed off land and was never made up of one ethnicity. It was always multicultural and ethnically diverse. With the exception of some cases, the ancient Egyptian people were mixed and there were dark skinned and light skinned rulers, some were black and some were white even within the same family and that's still the case to this day. How a dynasty looked also partially depended on which part of Egypt they come from, Upper Egypt or Lower Egypt. The areas in Lower Egypt were closer to Asia and the rest of the Mediterranean, while Upper Egypt was closer to Kush and the Sahara and the rest of Africa. All the neighboring geographical areas had some effect on Egypt culturally, lingually, and yes ethnically. Even some of the people who lived in Lower Egypt had Upper Egyptian roots and some of the people who lived in Upper Egypt had Lower Egyptian roots. And anyone who knows Egyptian history knows that there were numerous different dynasties that ruled Egypt and they were diverse and from different parts of Egypt. I find the notion that all Africans look the same to be appalling.

People of color means black, nothing more. Biracial means black. Get over yourselves! Losers making up fake history and putting fake history all over. They don't have history! Blacks are the only ones with no civilization nor history. And the only ones who never fought back until the white American man helped. They were enslaved thousands of years way before coming to already established America. Every race built America except them. Doing chores and farm work on a already built country doesn't mean anything. Blacks come from West Africa, Religion -Voodoo, and languages like Swahili. His descendants intermarried, which resulted in a mostly Macedonian lineage. Cleopatra, therefore, was of Macedonian descent. The "my grandmother" lady, in another YT video states that Cleopatra VII's mother is unknown: which is lazy scholarship.

Ptolemaic Egypt, which was probably the most cosmopolitan era so far for Egypt, was still overwhelmingly (90%+) ethnic Egyptian and spoke mainly Egyptian. As for Egyptians being very diverse in skin tone, that's just factually incorrect, even taking the modern descendants of Ptolemaic Egyptians, which are the modern Copts (they are actually slightly Nubian-shifted compared to their forefathers based on ancient dna), their skin tones range from pale white to a light golden color (a bit like Hoda Kotb). There is no such thing as a dark-skinned ethnic Copt. Plus skin color isn't eveything, plenty of other physical characteristics set clearly apart ancient and modern ethnic Egyptians from any modern Sub-Saharan population.
