This video comes highlyyyy requested as Netflix's 'Emily in Paris' has been the talk of the town for the past few weeks!! The questions that I keep getting are: "Is Emily in Paris a glimpse of real life in Paris? Has this been your experience as an American living in Paris?"
So, today I thought it would be fun to play a little "vrai" ou "faux" (true or false in french!), and speak to a few of the french stereotypes / things that happen in the show and share how they relate to my American expat life in Paris 🇫🇷 😜. Enjoy! x

Hey guys! I’m Tiff - a lover of food, travel, and good vibes. After traveling to Italy when I was 16, I made a promise to myself that I would live abroad before I was 30. And I made it happen! In 2017, I tapped out of my PR girl lifestyle to pursue my MBA in Paris. Yes, Paris! Jumping out of my comfort zone and moving to Paris, was the scariest thing that I’ve done in life thus far, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. This channel is my outlet for sharing more about my life abroad and the life lessons I've learned along the way.

I’ve been waiting on this video lol I’m from Chicago so I found it very funny and I’ve been to Paris twice for 2 long stays! I found it entertaining, Thé only thing is I feel French people are really encouraging when you are learning and try to speak French! Which is not an experience you would get “trying” to speak English in America.

My biggest issue with this show is that...it does't belong in 2020. It gives me 2000s vibes and reminds me of sex and the city, Devil wears Prada and gossip girl, like, remember when a show and characters existed in some sort of vacuum and had a little to do with real life. It is simply outdated. The main character is "unapologetically herself", she easily gets the job when she has no qualities for it, everything she does turns out great simply because Emily is a main character, duh. She didn't struggle even for a second in this show. Every single man she meets is in love with her or at least wants to have sex with her. Emily is simply not relatable and entertaining anymore like those 2000s characters used to be. Most of the people around her are as stereotypical as it possible. Imagine how much this show could be better if Emily actually tried to learn french, lived in a real chambre de bonne , tried to fit into the new environment, was homesick for one episode at least, wasn't dressed head to toes in chanel cause she can't afford it (you should be pretty rich to afford that amount of chanel). And oh, her blog. How amazing it would be if she actually put some effort in it. I mean, if creators kept the atmosphere but made the show more realistic and the main character more now and down to Earth it could be so much better.

Well the experience of black in Paris is not the same as an entitled ass that Emily is. She's unfortunately a bad actress and charmless so not likeable
@НадяХенриксон
@НадяХенриксон 3 года назад
@@punkqueen5664 I honestly think that they either put too little effort in her character or overdid her. Lily Collins is not that bad of an actress, the character herself is written that way. It's just a missed opportunity to make a good series with that budget. I guess they did it for USA audience in the firs place, who think that Paris is the capital of Europe and romanticize the hell out of it. And I know it is that kind of escapism series, which is a good thing, most of us have those guilty pleasure films/series/cartoons/anime. But Emily hits different. I guess it's disrespect and the fact that the show is hella 2000s in a bad way.
@Adwoa1

Interesting that you say it has a 2000s vibe, one of the writers also wrote sex and the city, a peak 2000s show with that kind of unrealistic world presentation you're talking about.

Back in the olden days (1962) there was a Broadway musical named "No Strings", it starred Diahann Carroll as an American model who moved to Paris. Except for the casting, there's nothing in the play to suggest the American model was Black American. Reportedly, Richard Rogers (who was both composer and lyricist) saw Diahann Carroll on "The Tonight Show" and wanted her to be cast as the female lead. It won a Tony for Best Musical. As far as I know, it's never been made into a movie.

Interesting hearing your perspective as to the reality behind "Emily in Paris". The problem I had was the fact that Emily didn't appear to have done any research at all about social norms in France. Ignoring the lady in the baker was rude from any perspective let alone the French. I found the majority of French people courteous and helpful even with my very rudimentary grasp of the language. I made the mistake of plugging a u.s belkin surge protector, into a European adapter, and then into the outlet and the entire hotel lost power instantly. I walked out so scared but the lady at the desk had no idea it was me and said the neighborhood had been losing power randomly. As for the show.... well I don't wanna rant for pages about what I disliked about it as a French person so here is an opinion I agree with of a black Parisian man living in the US (if you haven't seen it) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cTLIIik_o2k.html

The problem with the show is how incredibly condescending towards the French people is. Emily is bullied at work because everyone secretly is envious and threatened by her "American innovative ideas"? The show makers said that it is a "love letter to the French culture", but they must write Valentine cards like "On this romantic day, we should both celebrate how luck you are to be with me!". I am sorry, but I haven't met a single French who is envious of Americans or their "ideas". That doesn't mean that they necessarily dislike Americans, it simply means that they are considered one of the rest, nothing special for good or bad.
@daginn896
@daginn896 2 года назад
But that is typical American movies for you. Americans are so incredible US centrics. Besides, they focus so much on race in America - like black/white. While the rest of the world do not identify with such. Here it is more ethnicity. Like black people living in France are either French, French-Nigerians, French-Sudanese and so on. And then you have ethnical French people. Yes, Frencj is both a nationality and an ethnicity.

One of things I loved about the movie was how easy it was to make random connections with people, and I wondered if that was true. I'm originally from the southern part of the US where people are more relaxed. It's not uncommon to initiate random conversations with total strangers, with no other motivation besides to just be friendly. Enjoy a friendly chat, a laugh, and moved on without overthinking or adding meaning to it. I've missed that. So, if that's how it is in Paris, I would love it!

Would have loved to watch Tiffanie in Paris on Netflix ! Thanks for sharing your experience and also raising the lack of diversity in this show (i.e. the only Black dude being gay in the fashion industry comme par hasard! ). I thought it was great, a little bit too cliché and I found her outfits lacked finesse but she was wearing expensive brands which I cannot afford for now so 👀. Also I found there were a lot of sexual/naked scenes and usually that's more of a French movie type of thing to do especially Camille's dad being an exhibitionist. And of course la cerise sur le gateau, the show was filmed on the nicest area of Paris, they didn't go to Belleville or La Chapelle or anywhere not fancy. They focused on one district so it's a tiny bit limited. But I get it Gossip Girl wasn't filmed in Harlem and I CAN tell they were inspired by it. Overall I enjoyed it ! It's good to see how we are perceived 😊

Agreed, they definitely tried to glam it up by filming in the nicest areas, having her wear designer clothes, walking around in heels. They were definitely trying to sell the dream! I thought it was cute though, I binged the series it was an easy show to watch with the episodes being 20 min long. Would love to see more diversity in season 2! There were a lot of sexual scenes i.e. the scene with the model during the shoot, I haven't seen anything as "risqué" as that in Paris since I've lived here!

When I studied in France in the late 70s, few French people spoke English or they felt self conscious when they did. It was rare for the French to accommodate an English speaker by switching into English for them. They very much felt that it was your job to improve your French. Back in the 70s, French women in Paris wore stiletto heels walking around the city all the time. As Americans, we found that quite shocking. I think a lot of the things in this show were true in the 70s and not so true now. I know Emily's style is over the top, but it does reflect the difference - in an exaggerated way - of Parisian style versus American style. Back in the 70s, the French were very heavy smokers while my American student counterparts rarely smoked, and those who did picked it up in France.

I agree that unfortunately people of colour do not appear as much in the American movie scene, I mean look at Gossip Girl or Selling Sunset. Which does not make sense since people of color consist of a huge part of American demographics. However, I would not make that a thing why they mostly concentrate on white women going to Europe/Paris from America more so than other non white women. White people are of European descend and it seems reasonable to seek their ancestral roots and culture from the continent they originally came from. Actually, that is a good thing for them to do, when white Americans consider leaving America for Europe, they are giving more space for the indigenous Native Americans who inhabited that land for thousands of years.

Tiffanie, since you had to call the plumber is it safe to assume that you are responsible for plumbing repairs to your apartment? Why isn’t the landlord or owner responsible for plumbing issues? I guess that’s the difference from renting in the US and France.

I agree completely with you how people switch to your language when they notice your accent without being fluent in your language. You are very kind to laugh about that, that experience usually upsets me. I am a latina living in USA for 20 years and I think I will always have accent and of course I will look as a Latina. So I understand when another Latino speaks Spanish with me if I am buying something ONLY if they speak perfect Spanish but if it's not and they speak broken Spanish I keep speaking in English because come on! I m living here 20 years, studying the language, in all of the forms of being fluent, listening, reading, speaking, writing...and all of a sudden someone I come across to and is able to identify my accent, automatically think his poor Spanish is better than my English. This is something that will always happen, stereotypes, stigmatizing others.

As a non-american it is literally unbearable for me to watch a show that constantly portrays Americans as more intelligent than others. And the thing you said about the French apologizing for not being fluent English speakers is just sad! I am happy that you see it as it is, but most native English speakers don’t give a damn about the fact that learning English is not an easy thing for people all around the world to do! I hate that every kid in my country is expected to know English whereas in the US many people don’t even bother to learn about other countries let alone other languages

I'd like to say that diversity in the business world is "hidden" in Paris. Obviously, the city is very diverse and I also felt like there was a white-filter on the city streets. However, in companies, I noticed a lot of diversity as an engineer (all ethnicities, all nationalities, all genders,...). However, when we had a meeting with a client, they always try to take the most white/white-passing skilled engineer they can. Most of the time, there is no white person on the team, so they take someone who "looks" and "sounds" French the most. There is a lot of room for progress in that area, but we're getting there

12:50 or so, I understand there not being as much diversity in that specific industry, I just feel that the showrunners could have found a way to highlight diversity in other parts of the show. Like maybe show more of the large Middle Eastern/Turkish/African/LatinAmerican population in France. Hopefully they are listening to the critiques and taking note for season 2. I have a very a weird relationship with this show, I really wanted to hate it, and I get it's a fantasy, but it gave me a few hours of escape in this absolute 2020 hellscape.

A 500-year old building would be Renaissance style, so either a partially wooden house (most of these have been destroyed over time, often by fire), either some kind of palace. The "oldish" apartment buildings one sees in Paris are Hausmann style (1853-1870). I guess this goes in the same basket as Americans calling Fort Boyard "medieval".

I really liked the show, I didn’t take it too seriously and felt like it was a good show to take our minds off of the real world. Her coworkers aggravated me a bit ~ mostly her boss, and I hated that she was creeping with Gabriel behind Cammie’s back, & her sleeping with Cammies younger brother.... that really threw me, I was really side eyeing them for that especially since he was only 17. Overall, I enjoyed it and binged very quickly and missed it once it was over. I did really want to hear your take on the show, so I was waiting on this video!

I love Emily in Paris. The funny thing is that for non-American and non-French woman like me ALL these cliches are quite TRUE and BELIEVABLE. Dont take it so serious, have FUN! Its exactly how I see Americans and French - in a nicest way. So neither French nor Americans, no r English should be upset ))) Of course all exaggerated but that Darren Star and New York isnt like its in Sex and the City but its HIS New York and it became OURS - to us - to the rest of the world. And its HIS Paris. And that the POWER OF ART to you. Rome in Roman Holiday movie is not the same Rome to Italians. But that how we see it - through the eyes of creators. Stereotypes do not come out of nowhere. Stereotypes of any Era do exist and they shine in ART like Cinema . Thats what ART is for. - Hollywood is also not the Hollywood we know and believe. So what? Its magnificent because it was created by people to be what we want it to be.

I don't understand why the producer should make this story with a non white girl?? You shouldn't bring this color/gender stuff like the leftists are doing in USA. The producer is a white man then where is the surprise that Emily is white too? The stereotype about "an american in Paris" is old and belong to a tradition of Americans (Hemingway,Morrison etc.) who were whites. It's like that. Of course every american living in France could be from every sort of origins but you cannot accuse this serie to shed the light on a white american girl. France,USA are traditionally whites countries. This point related to color is useless imo.

About the French people complaining about their English, there is a lot of shaming in here if your English or your accent sucks, for some reason. Some dumb ego stuff, so usually people will be stressed about speaking in English if they are not fluent because they are scared of ridiculing themselves

I think black people in luxury is like black people and ski. One of those self-fulfilling prophecies. People don't dare get involved because they don't see other people who look like them in it and it makes them feel unwelcome, but there won't be more people who look like them in it unless more go and risk it.
