As someone who's read the manga and watched the anime, I really loved this season. It felt like the writers, actors, and overall staff were One Piece fans. I believe this is the best case scenario of what a OP live action would become. I also enjoyed their creative liberties of the source material as there are characters, plot elements, and subtle Easter eggs taken from further parts of the story and instead incorporated them earlier than in the manga. Overall it looks promising and the teaser at the end of the final episode of a certain character has me excited for season 2 (hopefully it's renewed). P.S. for Cris and anyone else interested. This covered the "East Blue Saga" so if you wanted to either read the manga or watch the anime where the next saga begins, I'd say start at chapter 95/96 or anime episode 61/62.

As One Piece fans, honestly im happy with this adaptation. Yes somethings could be better, some of the cgi could be improved and the pacing with Kuro's episode could have been faster. But honestly, it capture the spirit of the series but also does it's own thing with the changing of the plot. 8/10, can't wait to see how they do Alabasta.

Yeah the main issues with the Sanji and Usopp stuff is that there weren’t enough episodes (10 episodes would probably have worked better) and there’s too much focus on the marines. In the manga Sanji’s ride or die came from Luffy saving the Baratie and because he watched Zoro fight Mihawk. Usopp has more to do during the conflict with Kuro’s crew and we get a better sense of his character and skills. But these things were probably cut due to time and budget constraints because more fights are expensive and it’s probably cheaper to reuse your expensive sets with a B-plot of a second set of characters going through the same landmarks.

Tbh i don't get why people hated the syrup village arc, which at the anime i get why, and the live action, i really don't get why i mean yeah they pretty much took out ussop's big change of him standing up to kuro, but i still think they did somewhat a great ussop backstory, plus with how kuro is in the live action and how merry is instead portrayed as a way of naming the going merry just makes the going merry's death more valuable, and why yes i do think kuro and his theme song and waifu sham pretty much carried the arc i still love it, like kuro was actually scary instead of just being another goofy villain

One Piece is my second favorite animanga, and my fifth favorite piece of media ever. And honestly, as someone who’s pessimistic towards these live actions, I’m glad to say this one worked for me. The casting, the set pieces, a lot of it worked for me. Only a few story changes I wasn’t too fond of, but otherwise I think this was a really good adaptation 8/10 imo. I still think there’s better ones out there tho like Rurouni Kenshin.

The reason Sanji had less motivation to join the crew is because they cut the villain of his arc . He didn't have his own story to work through and bond over. I thought this was the worst change they made. Overall I really enjoyed it, but that was an issue. Netflix added the East Blue ova which is good way to catch up on the anime cannon if you are pressed for time . Welcome to the crew!

@seiya8580
@seiya8580 11 месяцев назад
Don’t listen to IGN. It’s biased. 😂 The show was excellent and the formula worked. That’s good enough for me. Things are going to get wilder, as required by the manga’s storytelling, but if production continues to accept the challenge without ‘putting their own spin’, it will get a lot better. As for the strange manga angles etc., those are signature stretches that will actually help in the long run. 3C may find it awkward, but I personally think it’s what keeps the live action interesting. All the awkward moments/angles/close ups in one piece have a purpose in the long run.

The arcs were all changed to varying degrees. Usopp's arc was changed the most, with both positive and negative consequences, the latter of which mainly showed in the form of his redeeming character traits getting practically no screen time. Sanji's arc was also changed. The most notable difference for as far Sanji's introduction goes is that the other chefs get more screen time, and his eventual leaving is a result of him overhearing that the others were hating on his food and mocking his abilities because they all wanted him to go with Luffy and join his dreams. And Nami's arc lost a considerable amount of its impact because they pretty much changed the role of the villagers. Originally they were aware of what Nami was striving for, but never let her know that they knew so that, if things became too hard, Nami could walk away without feeling like she'd disappoint them. When Nami's treasure is taken, she initially intends to toughen it out, regather the money, and approach it more tactfully during her second go. However, the villagers do not want to see Nami hurt anymore and decide to march on Arlong Park, assuring their deaths in the eyes of Nami who knows exactly how weak humans are compared to the fishmen. This is where she breaks, and where the hat scene comes from. To Nami, those villagers are the treasure she's been protecting, and she's unable to stop them. Luffy entrusting her with his strawhat is a quid-pro-quo: you take care of my treasure for now, and I'll go take care of yours. The changes in the live action lessen the impact of that scene immensely. There were definitely some scenes that were a bit awkward in live action, but I feel some scenes simply suffered because they cut out some of the parts that made the original storylines so strong in their need to fit everything into 8 episodes. All around though, I still enjoy it because the characters and world are very true to the spirit of One Piece, and what else could a fan possibly want, especially when it is also appealing to fresh new audiences?
@JimJones-kj8jk
@JimJones-kj8jk 11 месяцев назад
Don't forget that they almost totally removed Don Krieg from the Sanji/Baratie arc. Don Krieg was supposed to be the main antagonist in Baratie, but in the LA he was relegated to a small gag scene with Mihawk.
@Aviertje
@Aviertje 11 месяцев назад
@@JimJones-kj8jk True, but that didn't really hurt the arc that much as Sanji's major developmental points were all covered. They managed to give the audience a sneak-peek into the madness of the Grand Line early by doing that while simplifying the plot considerably, which is obviously what the live action needed given that there were only 8 episodes to work with in total. Krieg is a pretty inconsequential villain in the grand scheme of One Piece, with Arlong deserving more focus.

@@nbkw48 Eh... Debatable. They did some things better, some worse. I will say the anime has bad pacing (even though this part has the best pacing - it slows down after) and bad animation, so the live action probably offers a better watching experience over all, and the manga is a comic, so harder to compare in that regard. Also, a lot of the changes (but not all, a lot were clearly made for budget/time constraints for sure) were for the better imo. That being said, I think the one story arc that's just clearly better in the anime is the Nami/Arlong one. If the live action version was as good as the anime or manga you wouldn't have people saying "I think my favorite backstory was [insert character here]". Nami's arc in the anime or manga is just clearly the best in the East Blue saga. I don't think there's anyone who's favorite arc in the East Blue isn't Arlong Park. Honestly, I would suggest at least watching that one arc in the anime if you're not gonna watch any of the others.

Sanji's horny gag is SUPER annoying, but his journey to deciding to join the crew is much better in the manga/anime. Same with usopp - he's more annoying, but his redeeming qualities are shown off much better in the other versions. Overall though, they did a good job. There's even a few things that are honestly better than the original, because they have the benefit of hindsight on the 1000+ chapter series. It's nice to see all the positivity around it, and it's interesting to see how the fans and the newcomers critiques align and differ. It seems like the newcomer critiques are, surprisingly, mostly similar to longtime fan's, even without the context of the source material!

I'm a big one piece fan and I enjoyed the live action a lot more than I expected to! It's definitely not perfect but it feels mostly accurate while also making changes for the different format and limited time (those 8 eps condensed 100 chapters / 61 eps of anime) I do understand how you feel though with Usopp and Sanji, I felt their motivations for joining the crew were def stronger in the anime/manga, but again there was a lot that had to be cut or adjusted (Syrup Village was def the biggest change) but it was still fun and I'm happy to hear opinions of people who haven't ever touched one piece before the live action. I love your chucky videos/reviews on horror movies and seeing you talk about one piece was nice to see :) I do hope you'll give the anime/manga a try. Thanks for the review!

8:25 You described Ussop perfectly. He does not fit in the crew. He lies and hides when dangers appears (in the Baratie scene he hides under a table). He is the weakest character in the crew and he knows it. In the manga, his arc is completely different, everything happened in the coast of the island instead of the mansion. Ussop has a moment when he has to stop running away and defend Kaya. In Arlong Park happens the same as LA, he tries to run from the danger unitl he notices that he cannot run forever and has to stop the bull from its horns. Those scenes are the first ones that Ussop shows his courage and believe in himself.

My main point so far: 1. The actor who played Sanji has natural acting. The other actors played great but they clearly looks like they "have to or act like" to portray the characters. 2. Kaya have the best acting for non-main character. 3. I'll put some blame on the acting director (not the "main director" but the special director for acting, idk what they're called). Some scenes looks like the actors are playing in theater due to weird positioning or even the shot they're taking. Or maybe this was the camera director problem, idk. 4. We had too little focus on Usopp. 5. Luffy's fighting choreographer COULD DO BETTER. 6. I believe the BGM is the best thing abot this LA. If the show got 6.5-7/10 from me then the BGM got 9/10. For now that's it.

AIN'T THAT THE ENTIRE THING ABOUT ONE PIECE!? like he's plan is becoming pirate king, heill there's even some speculations that becoming pirate king is just a step forward to his big final plan that he's been planning since he was a child

The problem for me that couldnt be helped is that there was more development for each of the characters to join to crew in the anime and felt more natural but of course it had to be rushed on such a short time restraint

Ive been a fan of OP for nearly a decade. I hope this show gets so many more seasons. I love seeing what they do in live action. And for god sake, Netflix, DON'T BUTCHER MY BOYS ACE, MARCO, OR JINBE. THOSE 3 ARE SACRED. THEY NEED GOOD ACTORS.

My son has told me about the over 1000 episodes of One Piece but the Netflix 8 episodes for season 1 of One Piexe was great and I really enjoyed the characters building as they were great, the story, and the series. Want to see Season 2 now.

7:00 I don't think the writers had the option to cut the "cringe" scenes out. The author had final say in everything that went in and I believe he said this was one of the scenes from the manga that were "untouchable". They HAD to keep that in to get permission from the author. That said I didn't feel it was cringy and I overall like the courage the show has to lean into those moments. It shows they know what they are doing in weird and out there but they are alright with that but that's what the show is. Sure the show would be more digestible without it but that's why I think its a risky and brave to keep it in there and even on the parts where it doesn't hit all that well I'm happy they put themselves out there and took the chance to be weird. The main character is about to put his foot through a roof and yell out his attack as he stomps on a man shark and brings a building down, he knows what series he is in.

I think the biggest problem with that scene isn’t the scene itself. I think it’s acted as good as we will see in live action, gave me all the feelings from the other adaptations. The problem was placement. The scene they did next should’ve came before it. The scene they used after it to start the next episode killed all the hype I had for the battle because they decided to stop for dialogue.

As someone who really loves the anime I can say yeah this is pretty awesome. There’s a few small changes I can’t ignore including a pretty important fishman character being cut which will cause problems down the line it felt like I was watching One piece and I could tell the staff involved gave it their best effort. I can really appreciate that and definitely hope it gets a season 2

In the dubbed anime when he throws his hands up he yells "he's gonna pay". That would've been better here as to "of course I will" Also, Ussop will do more. Be patient. He's starts off as a coward mostly.

I’m a HUGE One Piece fan and I’m thrilled with this adaptation. The cast and crew really love the source material and the creator had a great hand in it all. I agree that the Nami strawhat scent was handled strangely knowing that I sobbed when it came up in manga/anime and I could nitpick other things too but overall it’s a wonderful series and is doing it’s best to stay faithful to the source material while making it it’s own thing. 💙💀💙

Ooouuuwie! You gotta do more Anime Reviews, Chris! Im also one of the anime fans that havent dived into One Piece. I watched the first 50 episodes, but it hasnt really grabbed me enough for me to dive into it. I mean, theyre almost at 1100 episodes! People have done the math, it would take 17 days straight of watching without sleep to completely finish the show. But with that said, i actually loved the live action adaption! The only character i didnt really enjoy was Usopp and thats because they didnt really dive into his development. He isnt just the sharpshooter of the group, he's the spirit of adventure and wants to live up to his father and become a brave warrior of the sea. But even in his own introduction arc, he felt like a background character and it didnt really explain him that well. But i loved the acting, the castings were great! Zoro really nailed the stoic, tough guy aura from the anime. I was worried about his character mostly, but they did him justice! The 3 sword style really worked amazingly well for live action. How he used the swords in unconventional ways to block and attack, it just made for a really captivating experience.

The way Sanji joins the crew is actually handled better in the manga/anime In the case of Usopp, no spoilers but him not feeling “worthy” was intentional PS: Zoro not using 3 swords after a certain point was adapted straight from the manga/anime

Season One: I can honestly say that I'm pretty satisfied with the results. I was a little concerned when I learned that my all time favorite anime was going to get a live action series - even after I learned that Eiichiro Oda was working with the people working on this project, I was still skeptical. But after watching it, I can definitely see Oda's work while also trying out something a little different. I was pretty happy with the casting choice, as most of the actors did a fantastic job at portraying their respected characters - my favorites being the portrayal of Dracule Mihawk; despite his limited appearances in the anime and manga, he has always been one of my favorite characters (and I was more than happy to see him getting more screen time on this series). And while I did like Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, his portrayal at times came off as weak - I get that he was trying to capture the stern and seriousness of Zoro, but he doesn't really have the voice for it just yet, which is why I think he could have used just a bit more energy. I get that there is only so much you can do with real people, and you have so much more room with animation, which is why plenty of stuff was cut out in the first season. But I really wish it had at least ten episodes, if it would have helped for us to see more of the characters we enjoyed - such as the battle between Luffy and Don Krieg. And while there were times when the choreography was obvious, most of the times it was done very well. And I don't object for diversity, just as long as it makes sense. I really do hope that Netflix keeps these people on their payroll, so they can continue bringing this amazing world to life.
