Koby’s expanded role also allows for further use of himself as an audience surrogate. He serves this role in the first 3 episodes of the anime, then disappears for a while. But keeping him throughout the season and following his discovery of things like the Seven Warlords (hinting at the corruption of the world government), seeing some of the consequences of the Straw Hats’ adventures, as well as Garp’s initially ambiguous morality, all help newcomers understand that in the world of One Piece, things are nowhere near as simple as they seem.

As someone who was so afraid to start One Piece because of how massive it is, the live action was perfect for me. The anime has really poor pacing and censors a lot of stuff. Even Zeff eating his leg which was in the manga got censored and he lost his leg because it got stuck while he was saving a drowning Sanji. That's just my advice though.

I just wished that Sanji had been present for Zoro's duel with mihawk. In the manga, thst fight is a direct equivalent to Sanji's situation. Sanji yells to Zoro that "it's easy to abandon your dreams," urging him to save his life. That was exactly what Sanji was doing by staying at Baratie, Garp even commented on this. That's when Sanji decided to leave and join Luffy.
@princessxxramo
@princessxxramo 9 месяцев назад
I think the introduction of Baroque Works much earlier on in the show, simultaneous with Zoro's introduction, was a great narrative choice to not only lay the ground for the organisation as a whole in future seasons, but mainly because it's wonderful way to show that Zoro has been declining every opportunity that came his way to join any kind of crew. I mean his first scene was him declining to join and saying he's got his "own thing going on". This really hits harder when Luffy asks him to join the Straw Hats and, for the first time, Zoro doesn't say he's got his own thing going anymore, but joins and trusts in Luffy because he realises - unlike anyone else he's met, and certainly unlike Baroque Works - that Luffy is a strong, kind leader who will not only allow him, but push him and support him in realising his dream of becoming the world's greatest swordsman.

Now this is how you adapt a manga into a live action show. Shoot, even into an anime. Charting your own course while still hitting major story eats that doesn’t who the characters are and what their about. Live action show runners should take note 👏

Actually, Don Krieg provided an opportunity to show off parts of Sanji and Zeff's character that were barely brushed upon in the live action. Yes, we still see Sanji feed Krieg's starving first mate, but in the anime, Krieg shows up with what's left of his crew after Mihawk attacked them in the Grand Line (he doesn't slice their giant ship in half until he catches up with them at Baratie soon after Krieg does). Zeff also chooses to feed Krieg and his crew, even though they were butts about it (and even though his cooks desperately tried to convince him otherwise. On top of that, it comes out that Zeff was big name pirate who sailed the Grand Line, himself, for a year, and was quite successful until he met Sanji and chose to turn his life in another direction. When Krieg learns this, he's hellbent on not only taking the Baratie (after Mihawk has destroyed his), but on getting his hands on Zeff's logs to increase his chances of survival in the Grand Line. Cool stuff we didn't get in live action, since they chose to focus on Arlong ahead of time 😢.
@danielhakimi
@danielhakimi 10 месяцев назад
I agree that this helps reflect Sanji's character, and it was unfortunate that they cut it, and weird that they chose to focus on Zeff's anger at Sanji over his weird recipes... But I feel like this was a pretty reasonable sacrifice for the purposes of making the arc work.

I actually liked that Luffy had this emotional turmoil going when Zoro almost dies bc of Mihawk. I also appreciated how his resolution showcased how much he values ppl's dreams but also how he's coming to terms with the responsibilities he has of being a captain. I don't think we see much of the latter until his confrontation with Vivi in the manga/anime, but it's mostly during his fight with Usopp that it clearly gets the weight it deserves.

A change I did not like and felt unnecessary was having Nojiko and the villagers not know about Nami. In the manga the reason Nojiko got tattoos in the first place was to support Nami and she was the only one she could confide in which brought about how important just having that 1 person can be.

I'd say the pacing improves even over the Manga. I had genuinely given up at the start of Alabasta because it was just dragging too much for me. The live action, however, is paced concise enough that I need to keep going.
@entertainmentfan1463
@entertainmentfan1463 7 месяцев назад
Lets be honest though, many shows pre-streaming era had some of the most godawful pacing imagineable. I still remember how many shows had that 20+ episode a season formula, and I thought the vast majority of them are terrible. Feels like they're just dragging the hell out of the series for the sake of it. It can work for comedy series like Simpsons, Family Guy, Friends, etc because comedies don't need consequential long stories arcs. Outside of it though, it gets boring and tiring real fast. Don't even get me started on police procedurals which is one of my most hated TV genres just outside "reality" trash. If the anime really took freaking 300 episodes to introduce Luffy's grandpa, I can see why the showrunner understandably don't want to have audiences waiting that long.

I would argue it's "improvements in the context of an adaptation" .... a lot of emotional weight, as well as thematic exploration and character development, got lost through the all that tightening ... but that is also a good thing, since in this way, the liveaction can stand on it own and we can enjoy it a reimagination of the manga seperately

You said it yourself, they had to condense 90+ chapters into 8 episodes yet they added a whole new original storyline that took away even more time to develop what really mattered in the East Blue Saga which was the Five main characters… so even though they did a good job, and enjoyed the show mostly, it could have been amazing or even a masterpiece without that new storyline.

It would have been an improvement if the show was better than the original source…. Something that is clearly not especially in the latter part of the season (Arlong Park). Personally I enjoyed it and I could say that the first and second episodes are improvements but at the same time they took away some important details from the source material…. Women look like real people instead of either blimps or boobs on a stick! Oh ya and Zef eats his leg! Really appreciate those changes from the anime.

A couple notes: 12:07 The LA Mr. 7, including his apparence, is canon in the original as well since Oda did give more information in the SBS (a Q&A section of the manga) about Zoro first encounter with Baroque Works. Still it was great to actually see the fight for the first time. 13:56 In the manga Garp does appear during East Blue saga in the cover stories, although the story itself does go into the next saga One change that I personally disliked was Usopp fight with Chuu. After he fakes his death in the original he was a moment of great courage that he notice he cant keep the way he is and lying about his fight would not do which makes him get up and call Chuu - in the LA that emotional scene is missing so him calling Chuu was no weight and is kinda stupid

Hachi was an important omission, partly because he is a recurring character, but also, importantly, because he was Zoro's last big win. Without Hachi, Zoro *kind of* goes out on a weak note-he just kind of has a small battle alongside Sanji after having lost to Mihawk. Having also cut Jango and reduced the role of Cabaji, I feel like Zoro's barely had a chance to show his strength, which is... kind of important. Zoro being the second strongest in the crew is a meaningful part of his characterization, and justifies the rest-the fact that he's quiet, and determined, and able to use you-know-what, and the whole moment at the end of thriller bark. And his rivalry with Sanji is heavily informed by the fact that Zoro *is actually stronger*, close though it might be. Sanji and Nami retain their roles-Nami as the navigator and money person, Sanji as the cook and a fighter. But I also think they messed up Usopp in an important way. Without the caltrops and other scheming in his arc, he's not portrayed as a smart guy. Usopp eventually does become the heart of the group as well as a non-useless fighter, but until the end of the next arc, the group doesn't have a dedicated strategist. Nami is smart, but she's not the brains. The next two members are very smart, but they're not quite strategists. We got a tiny moment with Usopp, but I think we could have used more, especially in his own arc, since it's not clear why Luffy invites him to join the crew at all at that point.

What about Nami’s village not being aware about her deal with Arlong? Especially her sister? That would mean her tattoo now makes no sense in the live action because Nojiko had her tattoos as a silent solidarity with her sister in the manga. They even removed Genzo’s importance as Nami’s father figure to her childhood. I understood that they had to remove Hachi and Moomoo bc of budgetary reasons but damn. Also they removed Ussopp’s character development in his village too.

Personally, I think some of the changes felt like they rushed the show a little bit. But I think this was necessary so that they could get all the way through to Namis ark. For the most part, I think they got the spirit of one piece down. I hope they’re able to maybe slow down the pacing a little bit for season two. A few more episodes would have fleshed out some of the characters a little better. But I think honestly the show did about as good as it could’ve. I’m sure it’s hard getting funding for live action anime when none of them have ever done well. Maybe now that we have a successful one they can get better budgets and more episodes.

I was startled by how good the Netflix adaptation was. I'm not a One Piece hardliner fan. I watched it for a good while, but stopped at some point because it really felt like the story had no endgame - it was just the same basic formula over and over with no long term plot per se. I know I'm going to get yelled at by loyalists, but that's how I felt. The anime really wastes alot of time on things that don't matter to pad runtimes, and while I forgave some of that at first...it eventually wore me out. The live action adaptation feels BETTER because it's tighter and more focussed. That's necessary by nature, but hard to do and do well, and this show does it while the other Netflix anime adaptations did not. Too many of them were either too literal, failing to realize live action and anime aren't the same and some adapting has to happen...or they took too many liberties and didn't even feel like the same show or same characters. One Piece walked the line perfectly by focussing on the source material's main strength - fun, interesting characters. The anime may have gotten lost in navel-gazing, but the live action show did not. Everything matters. Every scene, every beat.

One of my only gripes about the live action series (and really, it's only a small gripe) is that they tried to make Buggy too edgy and too much like modern-day Joker. In the original series, Buggy was a high-strung loudmouth, trying to ACT like a fearsome big-shot pirate... while being at heart a coward who fights dirty, then runs away or gets other people to fight for him if that doesn't work. He knows he's out of his league, but tries to bluff his way into fame and respect anyways. That personality is what made him such a great comic relief badguy, and imo way more interesting than a Joker knockoff in a pirate hat. (My only other gripe is that they got perfectly average-sized men to play big brutes like Ax Hand Morgan, like, were all the big beefy actors on vacation that week?)

All the "dragging out the story" and small details etc.. You have to compromise. And. About 2 weeks ago, I tried watching episode 1.... 5 minutes in, I thought it was cheesy and gave up on it.. Tonight, randomly I decided to give it another go and I'm so glad I did.. I just started episide 6 and IMO I'm convinced, this is probably the greatest animation to live action series ever created 🤷🏽‍♂️ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I know an actor that auditioned for Buggy. He did not know it was for One Piece or the character's name. He was given a generic name and how to play the character. The actor they went with is nothing like what he was given about how the character should be played.

While I liked many changes, what really upset me is how the events of Cocos are swapped. Nojiko and the villagers not knowing Nami's plan all along and the shoulder stabbing after the villagers went off to kill Arlong really takes the wind out of that emotional scene + it happening at night

For those who want a shorter abridged story, I would say the Live Action Adaptation delivers on a decent retelling of the story with little filler. But the Manga is perhaps the best version as you don't have to wait through episodes of filler just to get to the main point. Remember the Anime adaptation of the Manga version often had to have filler episodes to help the Manga Artist get ahead of their story before the Anime adaptation catches up with it.

i honestly dont like any of the changes they do in the live action adaption, one piece is a series about the strawhats which shows there impact on the world by referencing other characters they interacted with before, characters like buggy and koby getting more screen time defeats the purpose of them showing up later in Lougetown and Enies lobby repectively

I think there will be less BW people (only the core group including miss all sunday who becomes very important later on) i think alvida will look the same as she did before she ate the devil fruit that made her slim (she could still have the devil fruit power, but it wont change her appearance), i think they leave out the island with the giants (but i think that how nami got sick) probly find out about luffy's father sooner but luffy won't until probly s3 at water 7
@joshuaflask3091

Who knows but they have to include Chopper with Drum Island, Miss All Sunday at some point, Smoker Baraque Works and probably Ace. They will include Louge Town, Drum Island might be 2 episodes and little Garden might include reverse mountain stuff and Whiskey Peak stuff making it 2 episodes and then Alabasta you can do in like 5 episodes if you push it. There is a lot I mean they probably will combine it in different ways but that is still cutting and changing quite a bit. @@clintbrew

They have to devote at least half the end of the season to Alabasta. There’s no avoiding it. We need chopper’s island, but Little Garden isn’t all that necessary; They could easily make Nami sick without it. Im not sure what they’ll do with mr.3 and mr. 5 since they play a part in it. Also, its when Sanji makes contact with mr 0, but that can happen anytime. Additionally, Little garden was the reason Robin let the strawhats go, so I wonder how they’ll handle that. The bounty hunter island is important too because it introduces ViVi and the baroque works, but they could always do that with Baboon. Baboon, the whale, cannot be skipped, mostly because it connects back to Brook. (They’ll need a hell of a lot of CGI, because they’d piss of a lot of people if they skip it) Of course they need to do the final island in the east blue, because of Smoker, the relevance to Gold D Roger, introduction to Dragon, and etc. The calm belt scene may be hard to do. Extra but not really necessary, they gotta show all the strange weather conditions of the grand line. After all, it is vital to the story as the pirate graveyard. *Future looks bleak ngl* From here on out, things are so outlandish that it may wind up making or breaking season 2… either because they skipped it… or they execute it very poorly. It all depends on the budget and effort.
@joshuaflask3091
@joshuaflask3091 9 месяцев назад
Well they need to include Chopper and Drum Island which will bee 1-2 episodes, louge town needs to be included but could be one episode, Reverse Mountain and Little Garden should be if not needs to included some way could be 1-2 episodes as they probably cut Whiskey Peak. That leaves hopefully 5 episodes for Alabasta. Which you can in theory accomplish Alabasta in 5 episodes with the key points being Alabarna, Rain Dinners, Navanoha that one place they dock. It would be better with more time, but you probably need 5 episodes at least and definitely a bigger budget. @@anonymouslyforgotten5592

Never saw the anime, but saw the show, just finished it actually. And there are hits and misses in every episode. Many cast-members seems to be new actors that never been acting before. Kudos for most of them being interesting and adding personality to them. Never saw the bad guys being a threat really, but the clown dude was more of a menace than fishface for example. Excuse me for not remembering their names.

Some baffling changes with namis village not knowing about her deal with arlong change for change sake because the emotion and power of them wanting her to run and leave them and live her life is gone. ( small unimportant one is i dont like what they did for mihawks voice)

One nice part about adapting an anime into live action is that characters are much more distinct and unique. In anime, the creators have the freedom to draw the characters as uniquely and interestingly as they like. When the LA then adapts those distinct features, it makes the characters easier to remember and be intrigued by. In traditional film, I get so lost when there are 10 white guys important to the plot, all who have different roles. They all look the same to me. Unless they're extremely memorable actors, having characters that look so similar is simply annoying. In the anime, they have extremely distinct hair colors/styles, tattoos, clothes, scars, ears, noses, makeup, accessories, etc.

"adapting an anime into live action is that characters are much more distinct and unique." Totally. However it can also work in reverse too for example there's actually videos showing that every Dragonball Z male is literally the same face just with a different hair style. Talk about lazy.

Im sorry, but Garp in season 1 is THE WORST addition in the series…. Why? First it took time away from what really mattered in the East Blue Saga, the development of the Core Five Straw Hats, the protagonists of the entire series. Second it most certainly took away budget to add more important characters to the story of each crew member, like Jango and the Ussop Pirates, and Genzo and the Coco Village people. Third, the ending of that plot line was predictable after a certain point and it took away from the real battle of the saga which was Luffy v Arlong and the emotional weight behind that fight, to me it almost ruined the finale of Arlong Park. Talking about Arlong Park, they did that arc dirty with the cut of the importance of the villagers and Genzo… I was ok with most of the changes, but what they did to Arlong Park was not great. Because at the end of the day if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and Arlong Park you didn’t have to fix anything…

Luffys thick eye brows and lack of ADD , meaning Luffy is literally like having Jack Sparrows compass in your hand is how Luffy behaves(unpredictable, unprepared, but faithful.). Zoro isn't as happy/joyful as he sould be. Yes Zoro isn't feeling the pirate gig, but he normally just doesn't speak(neutral and wise) and reacts angry under Luffy dumb decisions or Nami punches. Nami is suppose to crap on everybody. Honestly pulling her abusive behavior back is understandable, but she is literally the captain. Usop is Usop.

I didnt like live action garp. He was to serious and crazy bout capturing luffy. In the anime he was always laughing at what luffy was doing. He didnt want to chase him after water 7 so he decided to do it himself without his crew so they could get away. But in live action he is dead set on catching luffy and never really laughs except for random crazy laughs that wasnt what he normally do. The other changes i can handle that one i didnt like.

Introducing Garp so late in W7 doesn't really make sense. Garp, arguably one of the most famous marine having same full name as Luffy, and none of the crews (especially Nami and Robin) realized it doesn't make sense. Having the revelation pulled earlier was a good decision since Luffy isn't really well known yet. I do have criticism with Garp's characterization, but I can respect that if that's what the LA was aiming for.
