Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has finally hit Netflix, and here is the review! While not creating any competition against the moview Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, the anime is still a fun series worth every second.
It's cool that so many characters who didn't get much development in the comic books or movie had their time to shine in this show. It would have been boring and predictable If Scott was going around beating up Ramona's exes again. Even If it was a new story, repeating Scott vs the League of Evil Exes would have been a wasted opportunity. I'm glad they went in a different direction and still acknowledged the book and movie. I don't agree with every story choice they made but it was still good overall. I had a great time watching it.
I would have also enjoyed a direct adaptation; however, what we got being so different was so fun. I agree, it is not 100% perfect in every way, but they fully committed everything to this new version and it shows.
It's a retcon sadly rather than a new arc. If it's a new universe that means that all the background about her exes that was added and Ramona have nothing to do with the original Scott Pilgrim.
just finished this like 2 hours ago. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. the movie was great. this was EVEN BETTER (at least imo). the references, the coloring, the representation of the characters, the NEW AND DIFFERENT STORYLINE. it was great. 10/10 for me.
I like how most people say Scott was missing for most of the show. It's only 8 episodes and he's in roughly 4 of them. Like I get it, but also he's there for roughly 50% of the show
Watching the anime got me to read the comics, and after doing so, I get a little more why people are disappointed in it being its own thing rather than an adaptation, but honestly I think they could still adapt a lot of things from it in a potential second season still. Assuming that the timeline is similar, events like Lisa showing up or Wallace's lease ending could still happen and those could still be used to develop Scott, who in the anime never really got proper development, at least in comparison. It'd be pretty fun to kind of get a vibe more like the comics, where the fights were usually pretty short and (for the most part) kind of irrelevant to the overall story of Scott growing up.
The show was a very rare one for me. I prefer 1 to 1 adaptations of stuff, but the way they did this show was well done, and not to mention the Anamanaguchi song from the game was in the final fight.
This is a good video, great job! My favourite Scott Pilgrim has the be the comic books (graphic novels). Most of the OG primary characters got their character development. In regards to SP Takes Off, I like the story. I finished it in one sitting, which was not my plan for that night. However, I dislike the bait and switch that was done by Netflix. For one, the Title SP Takes Off should've been Ramona Flowers vs The World (or something like that). Two, all of the promotional material such as teasers, trailers, artwork and posters, heavily centers Scott as the main protagonist of the show. To have him sidelined for Ramona and her ex's story leave a pretty sour taste in my mouth. Before I am misconstrued as a hater, again, I watched the show and I like it. But not having Scott as the main character and only a plot device after all of that promotion just doesn't make me feel good as a whole. Fans of the franchise, love Scott, and him being missing from the majority of the episodes is really felt. He is that lovable idiot (as Ramona puts it). Bryan Lee mentioned that he wants to tell a different story, and that's fair, but I wished that he would commit to that by having the studio hire different voice actors to do the voice acting. The movie actors did a decent job, but because these are the same voices as the movie, now I keep on being reminded of the plots of the movie rather than being immersed in this new story line. Watching the Japanese Dub sorta works for me, but Scott Pilgrim has a lot of sarcasm jokes that don't translate to the Japanese language. Music wise, they killed it. Loved that they got Necry Talkie to make an opening theme for the show. Just cookie and grungy enough to ease us the audience into the episode. So happy to hear the music.
Yeah, that’s definitely understandable. That’s an interesting idea about the voice acting, you’re the first person I’ve heard make that remark. While I personally really enjoyed it, that’s definitely something to be considered. Agreed, the opening was great.
Um... Isn't the movie the ACTUAL source material? This IP was done ass backwards as i recall from when the movie was new then had the games released(I can never recall if the books came first and finished after or were done first).
The comics are the original source material. The movie released when the comics had 4 out of 6 volumes published I believe. I could be wrong on the exact number of volumes that were out, but they were almost finished nonetheless.
