Hungary guaranteed their first place in the group even before playing their last match against Holland .. and the only hope for Holland to be runners up was to beat Hungary .. a draw or a defeat means Austria will qualify to the play - off against Belgium ..
It's a shame that the Netherlands missed out twice in the mid 80's Euro 1984 and World Cup 1986. The Total Football was already done by 1980 and Rinus Michels should have stayed as coach in the national team.
It's a shame Belgium didn't make it in 74 (in 76 and 78, no room to argue, Oranje over alles). Belgium made it even in 82 and 86. Beenhakker (80 since August 2nd) couldn't solidify the defence, adjustment made less than 3 years later (Netherlands lost to Belgium in 1985) Belgium as Netherlands failed to secure 1st place in their qualifiers despite potential. Looks like Oranje weren't ripe yet.
@@Ahito1984 perhaps I missunderstand, but why is it a shame Belgium missed the 1974 World Cup? They were in a group with the Netherlands, perhaps the best team on the planet at that time. Great achievement they played 0-0 against Oranje in both qualify games. If you speak about the disallowed goal in the last game; I can only agree with you, but also in that match NL was way better.
The match in Budapest was brought in austrian tv. Without the goal less than 10 minutes before end Austria would have gone to the play off Kieft was the star of this team ,and in the 88 winner team he was a substitute
Strikers came on went back then, Piet Houtman had a tremendous goal average but he was never called again (or left the National team). Bosman started in the beginning 11 in 1988, Van Basten was a substitute, too.

ironicamente, Holanda salio segunda en su grupo detras de Hungria, que tuvo un pesimo desempeño en el mundial, recibiendo goleadas de la Urss y Francia (y desde entonces no se volvio a clasificar a una copa del mundo)

I agree, Netherlands should have qualified for Mexico ' 86 and France '84. Superb team on paper. The reason why they didn't, too much individualistic, egocententric opinionated infighting of players. Typical Dutch. They were hopelessly naive at the back in defending. Their arrogance was inclined to take other teams for granted, hence why they lost matches that they should have won.

Holanda el 85 aun estaban explotando sus jugadores, Koeman, Rijkard, Van Basten y Gulit dominarian Europa del 87 al 92 ganando varias champions, la Euro el 88, semifinal de Euro el 92 (penales) ... solo necesitaban una temporada mas para llegar a su peak. La Argentina de Maradona la hubiese tenido mucho mas dificil contra esa Holanda que arranco muy mal el 84 las eliminatorias y despues no perdio mas
Decepcionante selección holandesa que de manera increíble quedó fuera del mundial por medio de la repesca. Tuvo una gran generación en los 70’s, fracasó en los 80’s y se reconcilió en los 90’s
I am a fan of The Netherlands and I was a child but I remembered the games against Belgium was dramatic. Belgium has a good team but not better than Netherlands. Hungary was not better than Netherlands but qualified. It was very sad
I remember those matches, there were quality players in the Dutch national team but there was no team yet, Austria and Belgium deservedly won against them

Very bad performance by the Dutch. Very bad organisation. They conceded an unnecessary goal in a very bad time from Belgium. The distribution of their goals between the matches is not good. They scored so many unnecessary goals against Cyprus which should have been scored elsewhere.
