I notice that the French national team had only european type players at that time. Look at the team now... But it's also true with Belgium, England, the Netherlands, starting for Germany... what happened in 30 years ? This is what I'd call the Great Replacement.
Equipe de France en pleine reconstruction après les retraites des Platini etc. Elle sera constituée de joueurs pris ça et là mais sans groupe uni comme en 98 et 2000
Some problems with rankings... 4:15 : Assuming this is the ranking before YUG-FRA then it was 1 - SCO 3pts 2p +1 2 - FRA 3pts 2p +1 3 - NOR 2pts 3p +1 4 - YUG 1pt 1p 0 5 - CYP 1pt 2p -3 14:35 : Assuming this is the ranking before FRA-YUG then it was 1 - SCO 9pts 5p *+5* 2 - YUG *5pts 3p* +5 18:39 : GD for Scotland was +3, Norway was 3rd and France 4th
@@lexkanyima2195 he was already retired and being the manager. He should have been the France player/manager as Johnny Giles and Terry Neill did for Eire and Northern Ireland respectively.
Remember watching that game live on STV- torrential rain that night . Was at the home games v Yugoslavia and Norway in that World Cup campaign Happy days!
France really was very awful back then. Admittedly they were replacing the magnificent team of the 1980-6 period, but really, they should have done better. Nice to see that some greats of the game were once young men. Shout out to Deschamps for being one of the goalscorers...no one knew back then he would eventually win the world cup as a player and later as the national team coach, and also add a second place finish too.
Preben Elkjær was fantastic then and even better than Michael Laudrup. He got the BRONZE BALL at the 1986 WORLD CUP and was named as the most dynamic and powerful forward. He also got the title of most effective attacking duo with Michael Laudrup at that WC, despite 🇩🇰 being knocked out in the QF. He was one of the most unpredictable players I have ever seen and was an inspiration and a pleasure to watch. He was also the inspiration for HELLAS VERONA to win their only SCUDETTO ever and earned the nick name 'The Mayor'. There are still hundreds who put his name on the voting list 39 years later. He is my ultimate all-time hero 🤗.
If Tarasiewicz's shot for Poland against England had been a couple of inches lower, England would have been the worst runner-up and Denmark would have qualified.
Christ! France was useless in this qualifying campaign. Their second poor qualifying campaign after Mexico'86. Of course, they were in transition. They were at a very low ebb and of poor quality from 1988 to 1990. They even lost to Arsenal, a club team in England in a Friendly back in February 1989, drew with Ireland and then humbled by Scotland. Probably one of the worst periods in their history.
Agree. Coming third with Scotland finishing second was awful. Yes they were in transition but it would take another eight years for that team to reach the pinnacle. and Cantona scored against Scotland in 1989, wonder what happened to him.......
The French shoulda qualified 4 WC in Usa 94 more so than Italia 90 fs Scotland still had decent squad in late 80s. France a minute or less from bookin there place in America until Div Ginola lost possession manager even made him sole scapegoat Lol a team game😬🐸⚽️
Buen equipo el checo.. Después se proclamó campeón europeo..Inglaterra jugó bien esa eliminatoria.. Pero se queda en el camino.. Saludos desde Fontainebleau fr 🇨🇵 ..
