DNS - resolves domain names into IP addresses, end users don't have to memorize these long numbers - a DNS server must be configured not having to memorize IP addresses as they change - DNS will resolve into the IP of the closest servers for that domain name to reduce latency - DNS uses UDP else it would be bloated with TCP segment overhead from establishing connections everytime via 3 way handshake
