Neumann NDH-20 vs. NDH-30 (Best Headphones for Mixing & Mastering 2022)
Composer Daniel Willett compares the Neumann NDH-20 headphones vs the Neumann NDH-30 headphones.
This video includes a rundown of the pros and cons both Neumann NDH20 & NDH-30 headphones.
Are these the best headphones for tracking, mixing and mastering?
From Neumann about the NDH-20's
The Neumann NDH 20 is a closed-back headphone combining excellent isolation with the carefully balanced sound image and outstanding resolution you’d expect from a Neumann product. The NDH 20 is thus ideally suited to monitoring and mixing tasks, even in loud and noisy environments. Circumaural memory foam ear pads offer high long-term comfort.
From Neumann about the NDH-30's
The NDH 30 is a circumaural, open-back headphone with outstanding detail resolution and high-precision stereo imaging with razor-sharp localization. Its linear soundstage and superior transient response recommend it for the most demanding applications such as mixing and mastering.
The NDH 30 was developed with the aim of making the reference sound of a Neumann studio monitor setup, perfectly calibrated via MA 1, available everywhere in the form of an easily transportable headphone. At the same time, the NDH 30 forms its own sound reference in terms of headphone reproduction, which has become a key to success with the consumer. Its superior sound characteristics make the NDH 30 the first choice for mixing and mastering. Thanks to its high long-term comfort, it is just as excellently suited to high-precision editing.
Its high-quality construction of spring steel and aluminum as well as its pleasant handling properties are largely the same as those of the NDH 20. However, the NDH 30 is an open-back headphone, which means that its dynamic 38 mm transducers work as acoustic dipoles. This allows their highly refined sound characteristics to unfold optimally: extremely fast transient response, dry bass, uncolored mids and transparent highs. In other words, the NDH 30 has no sound coloration, but reproduces the signal 1:1.

I have a sennheiser HD630VB with the same frame. After about 5 years of using them (pretty light use I'd say) some of the plastic/rubber started to degrade (feel dirty and gooey, trying to clean them further damaged that plastic) and it made wearing them on my head feel pretty gross. Maybe the reason is because I wore them outside (exposed to sunlight, rain, wind and all other conditions of the world outside world) and these Neumanns won't have such problems, but I still want to share this problem with people. Also, parts are impossible to find on the market, the only source is dismantling broken headphones from ebay.

Thank you so much for explaining this in full details and pointing out the con. Since you said the bass is heavy, how should the bass be leveled even though I every bass is different overall . Do you turn down bass if you have everything levels or just take out a certain frequency to make the bass be satisfied at that same level. Hope this question makes since.

Great vid! Thanks so much for this comparison, it's really helpful. I purchased the NDH 20 and have been kicking myself a bit. I love the sound, but the mid-bass muddiness is turning me away for mixing. Also, I've noticed that 3+ hours with the cans on, and my ears get sore (my ears are a bit stiff and they get squished inwards). The NDH 30 pads seem to be a bit softer/bigger... would you say they feel better? Do they put a little more distance between your ear and the headphone? I feel like that would solve both the comfort and mud on the NDH 20 for me. Which leads me to the last question here: do the NDH 30 pads fit on the NDH 20s??
@ComposerDanielWillett
@ComposerDanielWillett 2 года назад
Your welcome! The 30’s definitely feel like the speakers are farther from your ears. The experience is more like listening to monitors than the 20’s. The pads on the 30’s are definitely different that the 20’s. Better? I’m not sure. That’s a preference thing. The 30’s are a bit fuzzier. 😜

I'm definitely leaning towards the NDH 20s as a daily driver (on the bus, out and about, etc) plus it seems like it's a great tool for mixing and mastering in spite of being a little pronounced in bass. I do love that bass when I'm out though (had some Skull Candy Crushers that delivered that once). These being closed-back with a good seal is a huge pro for me too. The only con for me might be the extra long cord to tie up. I'm curious (for anyone reading), do you know what tracking means? Is that playing an instrument and recording it in real time on a DAW? I'm a bit new to the mixing world. 😕

@@ComposerDanielWillett I appreciate what you did. I buy my own headphones as well, which allows me to grab other headphones for comparison, rather than relying on memory. I think reviewers who work out of these review-set deals with manufacturers are unable to do that. When I compared the NDH-20, I was able to check them against other hardbacks like the Beyerdynamic DT1770, the Dan Clark Audio Aeon Flux and the Focal Elegia. It was a richer experience for me because I had those cans on hand. Yours may be the only review I've seen where someone said, "Look, I've got this one and that one, and while we're all very excited about the 30, what makes it different from the 20 is the open back - and that's important because the 20, with its punchy bass, doesn't match, in its quantity of bass, quite like the 30." That was what I wanted to hear. I've got the 30 coming tomorrow for a direct comparison. I'm pretty sure I'm going to discover you nailed it. That kind of dead-on analysis is often missing from so many RU-vid headphone reviews. Keep up the good work!

I’ve only been able to feel comfortable setting up mixes with headphones by using Sonarworks calibration software, something I even use on my Neumann ref monitors, but this means adding latency which can be annoying when doing detailed editing as the screen isn’t telling me precisely what I am hearing. Do you feel these are good enough to remove Sonarworks and still get decent reference mixes up that won’t make me want to cry when I turn my monitors back on?
@ComposerDanielWillett
@ComposerDanielWillett 2 года назад
I’ve never tried Sonarworks, but I’ve been happy with my mixes and masters by using mostly the NDH30’s and at the last phase I double check on my Adam monitors with a sub. Works great for me! 😊
@seanrichards9569
@seanrichards9569 2 года назад
@@ComposerDanielWillett if you are in a room tuned well enough not to use Sonarworks (or similar) then you are a lucky man. However, if you have access to a calibration mic maybe try the 14 day trial and set up a profile for your Adams to see what you think? It may just revolutionize things for you, especially as you seem to suggest you can’t really trust the Adams 100% without additional reference support. My room isn’t 100% ideal but I can only mix and master using my Neumann ref monitors with Sonarworks active, though I turn off for tracking and editing and am happy enough to build rough mixes on the Neumanns without, which is why I bought them over other monitors I tried. I’m not here to sell this idea to you, but as a (primarily) live engineer with 30+ years of systems tuning work under my belt I’m not afraid of the concept that most if not all speakers and rooms can benefit from additional system calibration, and that this isn’t just in the domain of Live Audio. In fact, this is one innovation that is (finally) being pushed downstream to studio environments where this has been around in the Live industry since the late 90s in some form or another. Executed in the right hands with the right product the result is nothing short of extraordinary.

The 16 inch MBP (2019) can drive them and so does an iPhone8 Plus, maybe not the loudest, but enough, for me anyway, you won't get the same separation as with a dedicated amp/dac but it'll suffice for regular listening. I love them, great headphones! I find that they are a little rounder / more veiled in the highs than my Neumann KH310a monitors, with a little resonance somewhere in the mids. I got the Arturia Audiofuse Studio which its by no means any ordinary and to be honest, even at top gain, I don't really heard then loud enough if I feel like. I'm having trouble with low end frequencies in general. Anything below 60hz is hard to hear and more of just a feeling, however with flat monitors and headphones it isn't obvious how loud these frequencies are. Only when I go to my car (or play on cheap speakers) do I discover that the low end is completely distorting. I know that there is not a "flat" pair of headphones or monitors that will highlight this problem the way a car speaker would but are there any headphones you would recommend that can show me where the low end is distorting? because I don't get that from my current headphones, the low end always sounds great until I play it on car speakers.

Reviews… lol… I just heard someone tear apart the NDH 30 more than I’ve ever heard anyone tear apart any piece of equipment. He HATED it and still liked it more than the NDH 20. I will soon be proud owner of both, either the 30s being new to me. I think I’ll like them, I liked the 20s. He talked about how he believes the NDH 30s are more for audio files than professional, audio, engineers, and how flat the sound was how dead it was … but to my understanding, the purpose of pro engineer headphones are to have the most realistic example of the sound with no equalize- flat as possible. I’m about to listen to your review now and it sounds like you’re a much bigger fan of them than this other guy was . Honestly I think I’ll be happy with them. I also noticed that the 20s have slightly too much bass. Other things the reviewer was disappointed in were the long length of the wire which I happened to like a longer wire and despise shorter wires- also he was unhappy that there was only one earplug for the wire and that it was on the side. It’s on…. He wanted the plug on the other earphone because that’s what he’s used to with most professional models and he’s also used to seeing a wire that is if not on both sides able to be plugged in on either side. These are issues. He also complained about the padding on the top of the headphones being uncomfortable. Although I have only used the 20s, I have been quite happy with the padding in terms of comfort anyway. SOURCE: den-fi.com/neumann-ndh-30/amp/

Listening to “these days” by Julie Byrne and laugh cry laugh. The 20s dont have that “oh my god thats beatiful” chilling magic thing that the 30s have. The 20s are almost there and they are very beautiful but the 30s have the full issue. Frustrating because will be sad to lose beauty for the sake of no bleed while tracking but like i said the 20s are very beautiful in and of themselves, just dont have the full chills one gets while enraptured in pure beauty and magic. Thinkin i will just need both unfortunately hahaha or to develop some covers! Maybe a good coaster will do. And yes the bass is sort of annoying in 20s. But pretty ok its pretty.

The 20 are great! The detailed low end - because of closed back design. AND all the DSoniq profiles include them already, so you can run with room correction software. Maybe the 30 wont be included...or take too long. Again, with a profile, it does not matter if 20's are bass heavy - it gets corrected.

I love the 20’s! I’ve used them for the last 2 years with great results! I was just using them today. Ive actually been going back and forth between them and the 30’s for mixing. Both great! I take it that you are a Devon Larratt fan. I love arm wrestling! Can Devon beat Levon???
