Today I review a vintage inspired, mid forward mic from Neumann, the TLM49. This thing has a very controlled low-end, a bump in the upper mids, and a tame but clear top end. If you’re going for a mid-forward Neumann sound, this thing sounds great.

I have recorded vocals on the TLM 49, when I was unable to utilize a vintage Telefunken ELA M 251 at my usual recording studio. And I must say how I was very satisfied and surprised at its performance overall. The sound was the vintage one I was after, and full forward and smooth. For the price, I say - worth it.

For this comparison, the TLM49, TF47 and KSM32 were my favourites. I don't count the U87, as sounds quite different, but would probably win most comparisons anyway. The TLM49 has been around a long time, I believe, so nice to finally hear a comparison. Thanks.

Great review, I think for singers a lot of people end up eq'ing the microphones they already own to get a sound they might not know is the TLM49 sound.

I'm so glad you got to review my Hero mic in my collection and against a few others I've also got. The TLM 49 hasn't moved out of my Ultrafonic Soundproof VO Booth since I bought the Neumann 3 years ago...whilst others have been swapped in and out on the other mic mount in my booth. You cracked me up a few times today you are so "irresponsible", but fun. Thanks for the shoot out. Now I've got to order some merch and get back to recording another Audio Book on my German Beast.
@ChrisSchaffer
@ChrisSchaffer 3 года назад
seriously, the back and forth between the reference microphone and each comparison microphone may be what makes your reviews qualitatively better than most even when compared to other folks who I also consider exceptional creators. Yup, it's tedious, especially for you and having to make your own dialog for the whole set... but it really is worth it in my opinion. Thank you, even when I'm not wondering if more gear will make me magically better I still enjoying listening to these. For comparisons - Between the TLM49 and telefunken I'm giving it to the TLM49 by a hair based on how my ear hears the high end between the two. For short to medium format recording I really like the TLM49 the warm mids do just sound nice and stand out - if I was listening to something like an audiobook or something for >2 hours I swing to the NT1 or the Austrian Audio mic at their comparative price points where the extra midrange power of the TLM49 might start to become fatiguing.

Great stuff, as usual. First, I have to upvote that sweet UA apollo x8: it makes everything sound better. I paid close attention to the AA OC818 comparison to see if I should have saved my money for the TLM49. I'm still a happy camper. The TLM's big belly--OK, mid-forward--sound was more than I prefer, but if Sweetwater sent me one, I am sure that I would enjoy the experience. Thanks Bandrew!

I continue to love and appreciate your thorough comparisons in these videos! In the case of your voice, I think I actually prefer the TLM49 over the U87ai - this mic almost made the U87 sound a tiny bit ‘peaky’ in the high mids and highs, the TLM49 seemed to have only the good stuff I wanted to hear, thick, clear, forward, just a great sound, might try to source one second hand and try it in my studio vs my U87!
@mindbendernine

This was an honest review - I am impressed that you would point out the "upfront" sound signature while playing the acoustic guitar. It did sound "blare-y" with no real sparkle or sizzle - might be fatiguing after a while. So many adjectives.

Great job giving a broad overview! I am new to this, just bedroom I wouldn’t even say studio. Considering getting first condenser mic. I could listen to you on the 49 all day. I was impressed by the TLM 103. TLM 102 is my upper end price range, so I’ll listen to it more...it sounded sort of closed, not open feel. To me NT1 was impressive sound at comfortable price. cb

Mics come down to a few things I noticed in my own test and from mics that I owned in the past...1. It depends on what your recording 2. It depends on your voice 3. It depends on your flavor and what you like 4. Your mixing...I owned quite a few mics and recently just did a test with my Nuemann TLM 103 vs AT4050 vs Rode K2...going off expectations I expected to hear a tube sound from the K2 and Nuemann be the winner...but I didn't notice a different tone from the Rode because to me it sounded like the other two mics...and the TLM had a touch more harness and lacked bottom end to me on my voice...I chose to keep the AT4050 because it had good clarity like the Nuemann (when mixed) and it kept that bottom end in my voice and didn't make it sound too thin...the Rode sounded really similar to the AT4050 but I prefered the AT4050 a little better by like 10% maybe but the Rode having its own power supply and a million ft cable helped easily make that decision..BUT if it had the best sound on my voice I would of kept the mic...so reading the comments im seeing people say what mic they are going to buy based off these comparisons but to find the best mic for YOUR voice and YOUR situation then I suggest using a retail store/website with a great return policy to buy a few mics that get great reviews in your price range to test them out and return the losers in your opinion...not everything is about price or about the brand name...
@MixYourWay

Can't just understand how they achieve this mid range. The others are quite competitive but the TLM is just something else. It's so defined yet controlled. Prox. Effect is just perfect. Damn.

Fantastic video production. Really appreciate all of your hard work. The mic comparisons are invaluable. Please continue with the "clearing of the auditory pallet" back and forth from the original source microphone. It is such a help. I wrestled with the TLM49 vs the TLM103 for vocals. So many video comparisons with singers but not spoken word and even a smaller amount demonstrating the different interface signal chains. So very helpful. The TLM49 is a very robust microphone. Great sounding mic indeed. The TLM103 was just a better fit for my overall vocal applications. Again your productions "knock it out the park" in both content and over all useful information. Thank you!
@Podcastage

Really happy to know you found the proper mic for your voice, and it shows that the most expensive mic is not always the right fit. Sometimes a more affordable option (I know saying affordable and Neumann in the same paragraph is an oxymoron) is the best fit. Thank you for the kind words Ernest, I really appreciate it.

@@Podcastage Oh you are so right about that. After seeing another video review of yours re: 440 Pure, l was so impressed with the self noise level being the same as my 103 along with how it complemented “your own voice” I decided to take a closer look. OMG, this thing is a total sleeper that complemented my bass voice on par with the 103. Suttle differences, but l purchased it as well for another of my on the road voiceover mics. Beats the hec out of carrying a $1,300.00 mic in a travel case. The 440 PURE has never, ever been a disappointment. Damn great mic as well. This is the most convincing “you get what you pay for” exercise I think I’ve ever seen. The TLM49 sounded clearly better to me than everything up through the TLM102. After that, I felt like it was all different shades of very good. I liked both the OC818 and TF47 a whole lot, and the KSM44 was fine as well. The U87 sounds fab of course. Didn’t love the TLM103, but it was fine. The TLM49 itself sounds really good, although it’s almost too old-school for my taste - something about the slightly grainy mid focus combined with the soft top end gives it a real ‘50s kind of vibe. Of the cheaper models, the Lewitt stood out for me, though it didn’t have the depth or elegance of the more expensive ones.

Bandrew, I've listened to this review many times, because I love the way you do comparisons! I hear and like the mid-forward sound of the TLM 49, and I think the bass on the other mikes mostly just sounds Boomy to me. But at this price point the 49 would be a future idea for an old guy like me just getting into songwriting! So I have been interested in other reviews, and was very impressed with the Lewitt 440 Pure. Then on Black Friday I saw the 441 Flex on sale $299, and I went for it as my first condenser mic. The M49 is a gorgeous singer’s mic. I’ve never used the TLM but knowing Neumann they’ve captured it exactly. I recorded Gloria Estefan live with orchestra using one and she never sounded better to my ears. It’s forward in just the right places for a female voice, helping with chest tone and also just the right presence. Some thought I was nuts to use it on stage but the owner brought a heavy stand and isopad to help with vibration. The SR folks begged me to change for a stage mic but it was almost comical what was lost. I assured her there was magic in the 49 and I know she heard it too.

Great work! I've never heard such clear differences before. Which mic is the best? Of course it changes according to your voice tone and studio isolation. I have Neumann TLM 49 and I like it too much. It is really very good with my voice. However I am more comfortable with Sennheiser MKH 416. Because TLM 49 grabs more sounds. You should be careful with your movements. Be careful not to rustles of your dress or any little noise in (or out of ) your studio. TLM 49 is especially very sensitive with Bass tones, even if your ear can't hear it. If you want to use TLM 49, you should have a good sound isolation and acoustic first.

Surprisingly, the Shure KSM32 has more "lows" than the TLM 49. If you want more lows, it appears that the Shure KSM32 is a better value. TLM 49, on the other hand, appears to be a risk-free solution if you want rumble-free vocal that doesn't fall apart during post-processing.

That's a great description of the TLM49, rumble free and doesn't fall apart in the mix. It just sounds so good. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

TLM 49 was everything I was looking for, and did what I was looking for moreso than the TLM 103 which was my previous dream mic. I can see the use for the 102 for it's 'clarity' and the Rode NT1 was the surprise (and I'd probably be happy with that, but dreaming is important lolz)

Absolutely having a dream mic is worth it. Just don't allow the dream mic to keep you from pursuing the dream of actually making stuff though. Happy recording DC.

The Lewitt is a beauty. I like the Telefunken tube mic as well, but it doesn't seem to handle plosives very well.

I was listening to the mic comparison with my eyes closed. I hear one I liked, opened my eyes to see my second favorite mic I own, the Blue Mouse. I say second favorite as I’m going to buy the TLM 49 now.

@19:32 "I just love the mid section on this thing". Yep that's a Neumann K47 capsule that everybody gets wrong when copying. It's always the smiley face EQ curve but the 47 is just about perfect in the mid-range. It doesn't have a smiley eq profile at all. It's almost a little mid forward but no one would ever say that and I guess that's the magic.

Thought it sounded really nice on your voice especially singing. Not sure what else I would choose it for; I could see it working well for violin, maybe cello as well. Perhaps a good drum overhead mic, but I usually like ribbons for that (the same could be said for electric guitar).

I've grown really curious about the Lewitt LCT 540 S, and I hope you will review it some day. Preferably before I buy it blind :P It's quite a lot for me. I know I really don't need more than the Røde Procaster, but still. I forgot, I am also wondering about the Austrian Audio OC18 or Earthworks SR40V (thank you Anton Browne...). These things are all too expensive.

Hello you made mu day in the 17:00, very funny, thank you. Good review, my ear is like the combat man in the war, but the Telefunken made me a difference but I will go for the Neuman, sounds great. Sorry for my English.

The KSM32 and NT-1 both give the TLM49 a run for its money. The 49 would sound ace on a tenor sax I reckon. Nice review as usual!

I assume you ran it thru the Unison Pre when connected with the X8 for comparison with Focusrite? That sounded great.

Great mic but I also thought the NT1 provided similar enough results to make the jump up in price difficult for most. The good thing is there are options for most people. I'm not sure when the AC was on/off but what stuck out most to me was the perceived reduction of the hum provided by most of the Neumann mics. Also, the Austrian Audio is still hard to beat;)

Thank you for the review; kindly try M149 via v 402 preamp and get ready to be blow away. U87 is the better microphone in this review second only to M149 if you get a chance to review it

In this test I thought the TLM 49 was the best sounding mic overall, though the Telefunken TF47 and Neumann U87 Ai were also good. I have a TLM 49 in my collection and I really love it. Naturally what mic seems best is a matter of subjective opinion and will depend on the voice using the mic. For myself, I conducted a lot of singing tests with all my mics, both tube and FET, and for my voice, with my mic collection, the winner was the TLM 49. I may yet find a better vocal mic for me, as I'm not done gradually acquiring microphones, but this mic is really satisfying, especially considering that it's not one of the $5000 - $10,000 mics that few can afford, let alone a vintage classic mic with costs in the stratosphere.

Espen Kraft did a good comparison between a $120 AKG D5 and a $3000 Neumann U87. He went with the AKG D5 for his pop vocals. I also own this mic, and much prefer it to my old Shure SM58 (a good mic though).

This could fool a bunch of people when listening to this with no music around it. Believe me when I tell you those 100- 1000 dollar mics sound similar by themselves to the TLM49 but put them in a mix and they fall apart. Its the difference of having a 500 camera vs a 1700 camera. No comparison in editing.

Exactly. Only people who mix songs with real radio vocals (not electronic/vocoder stuff) knows that.

Now...all i need is the money!🤣😂 the 109 is a mid forward tonality mic, but when i heard it in comparison to the NT1, TLM 102, KSM32, i think they fared really well! Do i think the 49 was the best, no, was it good, yes, which one i will take out of the above? All of them!🤣

It's hard to say which is better until you start recorrding your singing voice. It might sound good for radio talking but when you singing and put some pressure dynamic then you will see which captures the sound more natural and with nice tone.
