Today we're going to compare a vintage U87 to the Innertube kit mod. With a simple swap of bodies you transform your U87 to a glorious tube microphone.
The Neumann u87 has been the go-to microphone for professional studios for the last 50+ years. Being a FET design you don't have to worry about tubes going bad. Simply hook it up to your studio preamp and 48v and you're ready to go. But how would it sound with a tube mod? Let's find out! The revered and more expensive Neumann u67 is one of the best tube microphones ever made and the U87 and U67 shares allot of similarities and the Innertube kit is said to transform the U87 into a U67. This might be the most affordable way to get that classic Neumann tube microphone sound into your studio.

I bought this inner tube a few months ago and absolutely love it. The mic is much hotter and I have to turn down the preamp. It's as if a cloth is pulled off the highs and the bottom is so present. Put it next to a royer 122v and a Gefell UM900 and the InnerTube 67 was hands down the best for most scenarios. It really is a very big difference. Happy to have done it.

Congrats on the new baby! Great comparison. However all things being equal it really depends on the type of tube that is being used to make a difference. For example 12aX7 vs 6DJ8 etc including various brands. But that is a whole different can of worms.

The regular u87 has more character but sounds less detailed. The tube u87 sounds more linear but not harsh. It captures the full character less colored with more detail, more transparent but more saturated.

The mod has a little bit more harmonic distortion, less mid range in the 300-400hz region, and more treble. I honestly think the U87 sounds fine without the mod but the mod is nice indeed.

That's exactly as I hear it too! It also gave it a bit more depth. I liked it allot. I almost want a u87 again! 🙈

@@Christian_svedin agree, i would much rather have the stock U87 tho and instead run it through a tube preamp like an Avalon 737

@@INeedsMoneys that's an option too. I do own a v76 preamp and on certain mics it's the perfect match. On some not so much.

The regular U87 sounds like it's lacking bottom end & warmth. I have a modded 1971 U87 and it's amazing!

the FR on 87tube is better for me free hi freq and low bottom, and more dynamic. the regular 87 sound familiar is very good i like the "natural" compressor on it, when you sing loud parts its really hit it and glue and this is y is the best mic and popular. The Winner is 87Tube by far for me! thank you your video is really nice!

Well done Christian. FWIW, I have a refurbed 70's 87 that I purchased from Tom Onofrio so I know it was in solid shape. I also have the innertube mod. Your examples echo my experiences. I prefer the "depth" the IT brings more often than not. Stayne loves the Amperex Holland tubes for his kit. Tricky part is finding a tube with acceptably low enough noise floor. I have a few good tubes but still, noise can be an issue for more quiet sources. That, and I need to EQ or De-ess a bit more with the IT kit. But, yes. I like the depth, or size in the mix it brings over the more flat 87 generally.

Nice! Did the noise floor improve when you changes tube? That was my main complaint that the noise floor was quite high. I mean my u47 is way quiter. I mailed inner tube but didn't get any answer heh! Thanks for watching

@@Christian_svedin I'd love to say yes but, I honestly haven't yet heard a significant or, appreciably lower noise floor from any of the tubes I've tried. (about 5 or 6 and all "tested" good) but I hope to find one at some point. It seems like the price of admission thus far. And of course you could find a quieter option but maybe not a better sounding one overall so, as usual it's a pick your compromise game. ;)

@@chetdelcampo ah ok.. hmm so I guess it's a flaw in the design then. To bad since it really improved the sound. Sure you can use Waves X. Noise or something like that but it be better if he could redesign the circuit. ✌️

@@Christian_svedin I should say that I haven't personally had a big problem with the noise. Or maybe I've just grown to place that much lower on my priorities list in the recording world. (as long as it's not distracting in the macro). I don't think he's still active in the audio products biz? so a redesign might not ever happen. I still hold out a little hope I might find a tube that helps but?

Interesting, in the context of the mixing i can`t really hear that much difference except for some roll of the high frecuencies and some more mid saturation on the tube one. I prefer the tube version in this audio, but i dont consider it something you can`t deal via plug ins (i might be wrong too). I would love to hear this test in a more full frecuency test: like an acoustic guitar maybe. What about the TLM-67? Thank you bro.

Hey! I'd say the difference is quite big. I really liked what the tube mod did! I'm going to include some sort of acoustic test in my future mic tests. It's a good reference to have! No Tlm67 in the pipeline. I'm kind of depending on my friends to loan me mics at this point!

Is the tube mod a k67 tube inside the u87? Would love to see the frequency response. I’m looking to get as close to the Sony c800 as possible

With this particular mod you take out the body and exchange it so no mod to the original circuit. You won't get close to a Sony sound with a Neumann mic

It's really not the same using a circuit then adding that in the mix. It's a non-destructive mod too! So you can easily revert it back to normal 👍

No it's a kit from Innertube audio. Buy it pop it into your u87 and record!

For God sake... how do you can remotely think is a good idea to destroy an original 1972 Neumann U87 circuit and put inside it a DIY tube kit? If you want to DIY, experiment with a chinese clone. If you want an original vintage tube Neumann, sell your 87 and save money to buy a 67! "Georg Neumann did it, leave it alone! You can only get it worse."

Destroy? It's completely reverseable. You pull out the body and replace it with the tube mod. Takes a couple of minutes to reverse it back ✌️

@@Christian_svedin Well, why call it a mod? If is a totally different circuit, why do you have to swap it in place of an original, precious vintage mic circuit? Is just to save the cost of a new capsule and body?

@@biula3278 look it like a cheapish way to get closer to a u67 type sound. It is a modification but you don't mod the original body you take advantage of the vintage capsule. I think it worked quite well and gave the u87 new life. I'm not a big u87 fan to begin with. Anyways ✌️

@@Christian_svedin Ok, I understand your effort (i'm an audio engineer, I restore vintage mics and I build a line of tube and ribbon mikes of my design on client request). But without the original U67 output transformer with its feedback coil, and without the EF86 tube with the right feedback eq net you cannot use the U87 capsule in a linear way! The sound you listen as result of a "linear response" circuit applied on the KK87 capsule is a hyped, "loudness sounding" curve... not what this capsule is ment to sound. Trust me, Georg Neumann knew what he was building...

@@biula3278 I'm not really arguing. I just demoed the tubekit here. I thought it was nice and improved the overall sound. You might disagree but I'm not affiliated with the company that makes the kit I just borrowed from a friend. I was mainly interested in checking it out since I've read quite a few statement about it and people seem to enjoy it 🙂
