Neural Amp Modeler (NAM) first impressions

I was at my brother Zorran’s studio a few nights ago and he got me to try this free open source plugin called Neural Amp Modeler (no relation to Neural DSP). I was quite impressed by how well it reacted to picking dynamics and guitar volume roll-off, both a big part of my playing . It happens naturally with most tube amps, yet it’s kinda hard to replicate with modellers. I decided to try it out at the home studio and share the results with you. I used the NAM plugin for just the amp models, the speaker cab sim was handled by Two Notes Wall of Sound on the Friedman G12-65 4x12 cab (my favourite).
The guitar is a Fender Eric Johnson signature Strat with Suhr Thornbucker+ and V60LP pickups.

true! same for any other guitar gear it seems. Somehow the metal guys (not a woman in sight ever) are much more ODHD than the rest of us and have their YT game on. Maybe YT is a perfect sweet spot for those of them who spent sooo many hours practising those meandering 'riffs' and finally nailed it. Same for the IR creators also btw. They really know their stuff and learned how to DIY it up to pro level.

Excellent demo and review. I have downloaded NAM and some sims, IR's and I am waiting on my DI box. Interfaces are so cheap these days ( I am running a Scarlett solo and an Apollo solo) and Reaper is dang near free! If I understand this works as a stand alone also. Fantastic!

Sounds fantastic for a free plugin. I do wonder what would it sound like without the speaker cab simulator, though. If you do more stuff like this, showcase the product by itself, then throw on other stuff to compare and contrast what you're adding.
@blackstratblues
@blackstratblues Год назад
No need to wonder, try it out with the IR of your choice. I went with the Two Notes WOS because without some speaker simulation/IR it will sound horrible, just like a real amp. The NAM plugin can host an IR if you want.

Great tones! The other day, in the quest of finding sweet tones, I finally decided to connect the Scarlett 2i2 audio interface that I had lying around to NAM on my laptop and another wire to my guitar, but I failed to get any sound out of it, let alone get the sweet sweet Andy Timmons tone that I had downloaded on my laptop. Is there something I'm missing or is there a specific audio interface that's used for this purpose? (The one that I have is my uncle's that he'd got to record him singing old Hindi songs on his karoke)

Hey man, Gig Performer and NAM - the best combination ever! Can you make a video of tweaking Gig Performer and NAM, maybe tiny tips and tricks to have the ultimate sounds? NAM definitely works better in Gig Performer than standalone.

@@blackstratblues Those are fabulous and so is your playing! Maybe setting up swells, output fading and transition between various sounds. Did you measure latency?
@blackstratblues
@blackstratblues Год назад
@@jackjohnson8446 Oh you mean setting up Gig Performer and NAM as a live performance solution? Interesting, I've never looked into it because I just use a small pedalboard with some drives and HX stomp into the return of a L6 Spider Valve for most live gigs, the good stuff stays home ;) It would be cool to try though. I haven't measured latency because it felt pretty damn good at 64 samples.

@blackstratblues
@blackstratblues 9 месяцев назад
Yup it’s still getting used. Made another couple of videos using it if you wanna check. Hoping a low latency hardware solution becomes possible before lot too long so I can use it live.
@everythingisopen
@everythingisopen 9 месяцев назад
@@blackstratblues Great - checking. FWIW I've got a 2012 12GB RAM i5 dual core running one NAM instance at 16 samples buffer without a glitch, into a MX5. Chain is guitar > MX5 > NAM DAW > MX5 as wef tx and IR loader. But the round trips adds up, I can't imagine a fluent player like you could live with it for live use.

Hi Master, i would like to know which audio interface have you used in this video, also if you`ve made some kind of mod in your volume and tone guitar knobs as to not lose sound richness at low levels (as resistances, capacitors, any?). Thx in advance.
@blackstratblues
@blackstratblues 10 месяцев назад

Congratulations on the video! I know Nam, I tried to use profiles and IRs as per video, but it doesn't sound so well! Try with 3 Stratocaster with several pickups and Les Paul R8. I always feel very annoying highs very digital "fizz". Have you used post eq etc? Thank you
@blackstratblues
@blackstratblues Год назад
Glad you liked the tones! I didn’t use any post EQ, just some reverb. Have you tried Wall of Sound for the cab sim? The cab I used (Friedman 4x12 with G12-65s) is nice and warm.

Any of the slightly crunchy amps with the Strat neck pickup and gtr volume on 6-7 should do the trick. Most of it will be about how you hit the strings with the pick, and that's hard to distill into a plugin :)
