~ Neurobiological abnormalities in PTSD overlap with features found in traumatic brain injury
~ The response of an individual to trauma depends not only on stressor characteristics, but also on factors specific to the individual.
~ Perception of stressor
~ Proximity to safe zones
~ Similarity to victim
~ Degree of helplessness
~ Prior traumatic experiences
~ Amount of stress in the preceding months
~ Current mental health or addiction issues
~ Availability of social support
Introduction
~ For the vast majority of the population, the psychological trauma is limited to an acute, transient disturbance.
~ The signs and symptoms of PTSD reflect a persistent, abnormal adaptation of neurobiological systems to the witnessed trauma.
What is the HPA Axis
~ Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis AKA the Threat Response System
~ Controls reactions to stress and regulates many body processes, including digestion, the immune system, mood and emotions, sexuality, and energy storage and expenditure
~ The ultimate result of the HPA axis activation is to increase levels of cortisol in the blood during times of stress.
~ Cortisol's main role is in releasing glucose into the bloodstream in order to facilitate the “flight or fight” response. It also suppresses and modulates the immune system, digestive system and reproductive system.
HPA-Axis Dysfunction
~ The body reduces its HPA axis activation when it appears that further fight/flight may not be beneficial. (Hypocortisolism)
~ Hypocortisolism seen in stress-related disorders such as CFS, burnout and PTSD is actually a protective mechanism designed to conserve energy during threats that are beyond the organism's ability to cope.
~ Dysfunctional HPA axis activation will result in
~ Abnormal immune system activation
~ Increased inflammation and allergic reactions
~ IBS symptoms such as constipation and diarrhea,
~ Reduced tolerance to physical and mental stresses (including pain)
~ Altered levels of sex hormones
Summary
~ A variety of changes take place in the brains and nervous systems of persons with PTSD
~ Pre-existing issues causing hypocortisolism (the brain has already down regulated) increases the likelihood of the development of PTSD
~ This points to the importance of prevention and early intervention of adverse childhood experiences
~ People with hypocorticolism may or may not have PTSD
~ Hypocorticolism sets the stage for the Flat and the Furious  toxic levels of glutamate upon exposure to stressors  reduction of hippocampal volume persistent negative brain changes
Summary
~ People with PTSD are more reactive to emotional stimuli, even stimuli unrelated to trauma
~ Hypocorticolism results when the brain perceives that continued effort is futile.
~ Feelings of “fatigue” set in (akin to reduced stress tolerance)
~ Reducing fatigue can be accomplished, in part, with psychological factors including
~ Motivation/Knowledge of “competitors”
~ Feedback (frequent successes)
~ Knowledge of an endpoint
Summary
~ 46% of people in the US are exposed to adverse childhood experiences. (Early Intervention)
~ Instruction in skills to handle emotional dysregulation
~ Mindfulness
~ Vulnerability prevention and awareness
~ Emotion Regulation
~ Distress Tolerance
~ Problem Solving
~ Of those exposed to trauma, education about and normalization of heightened emotional reactivity and susceptibility to PTSD in the future may be helpful

Welcome. Do not hesitate to make notes of what you want to cover before meeting with the Doctor. Maybe even make an note for the nurse to give him/her before you meet with them. I have found this works really well for some clients. Doctors appreciate it because they can put the note in your chart.

This is confusing and contradicts itself at points. So does childhood trauma cause raised cortisol levels as adults or low cortisol levels? If consistently low cortisol levels what glands in the HPA-AXIS have been affected? And should low cortisol levels be treated with replacement therapy such as hydrocortisone? Or can these glands recover?

Question: My son experienced a lot of (life saving) medical trauma during the first year of his life. Could this lead to PTSD and the other range of experiences you discuss here? As a child and now young adult he has certainly seemed to be experience a lot of anxiety and a lack of interest in close relationships (especially intimate ones). I think I probably know the answer to this but I have never seen any discussion of it as a topic. Thank you for posting this video, really informative.

What does it matter anyway, knowing the fact that my body and brain has changed due to childhood trauma makes me go even deeper into sadness and despair. Through no fault of my own I have been damaged and I can never be a "whole" person again. I don't really find the concept of coping appealing, learning to deal with it just quite doesn't make up for the shitty hand life dealt to me. Yes, I am seeing a therapist, but what's the point anyway, nothing can repair this. I believe in concepts like innocence, fairness, justice, balance, light...how the hell is this shithole of a world a fair place? Yeah, the world isn't fair and there are starving children in Africa, I know, thanks...makes the concept of "shithole" even more obvious. Thanks for taking the time to post this and for your efforts, at least I have better knowledge of what I am up against!

I hope you’re doing better. I’m a sober alcoholic of 9 years, and I was also abusing opioids and Xanax. Our systems stop producing endorphins and down regulates dopamine. It takes awhile to get it back to normal levels. There is something called PAWS-Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. I have clients map,out a trauma lifeline first I ask them to write out the decades or five year segments of their lives and their ages when significant traumatic events occurred...deaths in the fami?y of significant others and what that person meant jn their life, other losses of such people eg divorces, custody etc. Then other events related that were also traumatic. Then sources of ongoing trauma...etc once that is done we together rate the strength and lengthof that trauma...what we often see is near constant lower level trauma and then big spikes in severity. Some people have almost u remitting trauma in their lives. Next we talk about how often thoughts about these events enter their thoughts unbidden. Some peole may have done well for long periods of time and then some new trauma dredges up u bidden memories of those former traumas. This is the diagnostic phase of treatment.

Thank you so much for this. In my early 20s when I was delving into my trauma for the first time I had a book on pelvic care that addressed the energetic aspects of the womb and it's ability to store trauma. This was one of the exercise. That really helped me sit with myself and the things that were contributing to my grief. Do you have a special media page or something? Thanks a lot for sharing these steps on your practice. I will go back into mapping what traumas still stand out and observe based on your suggestions. The past nine years of self healing has landed me at the age of 29, back in school doing psychology after years of ill health and inner turmoil that now seems like a bad dream I woke up from🙂 Wishing you well from the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹🙏🏼

We have a stable together I mean I was a child but she ran it and she ran it with compassion and humanity and hard work we saved horses from the race track up in Saratoga here in New York. From being slaughtered back in the 70s. And my mom would revive them and then I would ride them.
