Hey Ivan, thank you for the superb review! I’m so glad to be seeing more reviews on caveman stuff especially ones that scientifically compare the wet/dry (this is so important for subtle tonal equipment). Adding the amp sim was the cherry on top! I do want to interject on you argument about the added freqs from the bp1. In my opinion this is exactly why you would buy the caveman vs any other di or cheap preamp. Being an amplifier it is a big aspect of our instrument (finger->bass->amps/effects) also having something that naturally adds rich harmonics is better than boosting existing frequencies from the pups as this imho sounds unnatural. Vice versa tools like EQ and hp/lp filters are perfect for shaving/reducing unnecessary frequencies. An approach could be to start with a big bold “canvas” of freq and shape it with your tools to create the sculpture necessary for that moment in music. Again, beautiful review! Can’t thank you enough!

A very good review. I prefer the sound without the BP1 Compact.

I had the chance to put both the BP1 and the BP1 Compact head-to-head last week. In the end, I went with the BP1 as it had a bit more clarity and just sounded more 'open' to me. But the Compact sounded great, too. Absolutely nothing bad to be said about it. I'll probably end up getting the BP1 Compact, as well, someday. Great demo, Ivan, thank you!
@IvanBassist
@IvanBassist Год назад
Maybe the BP1 has more headroom due to the different power supply?
@SquareWaveSymphonies
@SquareWaveSymphonies Год назад
@@IvanBassist I think it's the overall voicing of the preamp. Headroom surely plays a role but I think it's the sum of the used parts. The circuit designs are similar but not the same after all.

Did you get a chance to compare both of them to the BAE DMP? That’s ultimately the sound I want. I ordered the compact for the smaller size (and price, lol) but I’m assuming the full size version gets closer.
@SquareWaveSymphonies
@SquareWaveSymphonies Год назад
@@shawnsalon4826 Unfortunately, I don't have any hands on experience with the BAE. The store where I checked out the BP1 and BP1 C focusses (pretty much exclusively) on bass gear and I guess the BAE is probably more of a piece of studio equipment.
@shawnsalon4826
@shawnsalon4826 Год назад
@@SquareWaveSymphonies thanks for the response. Yeah, the BAE is technically a mic preamp, but it sounds amazing when you run a bass through it. I think the circuitry in the DP1 is based on it. Either way, I just got the compact and I am in heaven. I wasn’t expecting it to make the rest of pedals come alive like it does. I don’t see myself moving on from this sound for a long time, if ever.

Sounds great! You should checkout the Jad Freer Capo, it's incredible versatile , sounds remarkable and packs way more features than any other DI/preamps I've tried. Would be great to see a shootout against the Noble, Capo and Caveman.

I understand that Cioks have an add-on for the DC7 that can supply a quad cortex which might be one way to solve your problem

Cioks came out with the Crux to be able to power high current devices like that Quad Quartex. U should definitely check it out
@IvanBassist
@IvanBassist 9 месяцев назад
You still need to connect the Crux into a DC7 if I’m not mistaken. It’s much cheaper to just use the adapter cables. That is if you do not mind losing some of the power outlets of course
@orryfishburne5326
@orryfishburne5326 9 месяцев назад
yea u still need to plug it into the 24v expansion output on the DC7 or a Strymon Zuma. Is a good addition if u want to save the outputs for other pedals, but it's definitely cheaper to use current doublers and combining outputs to power it.

Brilliant video and so useful…. Have a or 2… Question are you running the BP-1 before the Quad or the Quad in the effect’s loop ? What’s thoughts do you have on either option ? What’s your view on the DI out of the cortex compared to something Lille the BP-1

There is something I can't understand , If you do a studio work you would assume that they have already a pro quality DI or preamp available . Use it on stage ? Why ? nobody would notice and there are so many option at less than half the price ? Use it at home ? is there so much difference with a sansamp or other to justify the price ?
@cheveyo2403
@cheveyo2403 Год назад
sometimes gear is designed to avoid problems rather than to add much flair to it. it is true noone would hear if you have a quality amp (also like a noble) but they would surely hear if there is something wrong with your sound.
@vendettawarcrime
@vendettawarcrime Год назад
It’s a fair point and one that is debated to death on forums all over the net on all gear forums. Having had the chance to try some higher end preamps/DI’s versus more accessible gear the difference is often in clarity and sheen and of course the baked in sound of whichever unit you’re plugged in to. It’s also a bonus to have gear which doesn’t introduce noise and which delivers on each gig. Confidence in gear is very important especially when out gigging and we always want to send the best signal to the tech if we’re lucky enough to play a venue with in house engineers, maybe even more importantly when we don’t have the additional tech support! Using my new to me tube pre amp/DI the difference in clarity and overall ‘dimension’ to the sound is really noticeable. My amp sounds like it’s been opened up and the ‘audio bandwidth’ has increased, there’s greater extension to the lows and highs but the sound isn’t boomy or shrill at either end of the spectrum. The sound tech at my gig approached me at the interval after our second set at the weekend and asked what I was doing with the bass tone and described it as the best bass tone she’s heard in that room describing it as “just there!” and needing no work from the desk. She seemed genuinely enthused and I played the third set with a certain reassured confidence knowing my bass was indeed sounding pretty righteous 😀 The import thing is finding gear which works… it doesn’t has to be a £700/€/$ DI box but it simply needs to make you happy with your sound and if that makes you feel good when playing then you enjoy it, the band and the people watching will enjoy it and everyone comes away from the gig all the better for the experience.

@@vendettawarcrimecare to share what tube pre/di you were using? I'm starting to narrow down my choices on mine
@vendettawarcrime
@vendettawarcrime Год назад
@@semiprohooker sure I was using and continue to use a Jule Simone preamp. I rate it very highly having used many different di preamps this one does a bit of everything. Tube pre, very well voiced eq, transformer DI, drive which does enough to colour the sound without being too dirty or fuzzy. I played with a noble and it’s great but to me I’d rather have the Simone as I think it’s world class sounding and more versatile too for about the same money. It’s a lot of money but I honestly feel it’s better value (than the noble - more tubes, more versatile eq etc.) and I don’t know why it’s not lauded the same way the noble is. If you get a chance to try one you really should!

I am pretty sure this is a very high quality preamp. But doesn't do some special. Like many others on market, and biggest disappointment for us??? No body understand and see the critical differences in the Mix between this and many others.
