Freediving Big Island is always an adventure...from gallivanting on green sand beaches to getting stuck on cinder cones, there is always a story to be told after being out on this island! We were curious to check out some diving down near the Southern point of the island so grabbed our gear and headed off. Boy were we in for a surprise!

You guys literally got no shots at all of the reef. That spot is literally my front yard but I haven’t dove out there yet the footage you showed I didn’t see a single fish except for the hammerhead and I was disappointing until I heard you say that the reef was amazing. At any rate thanks for sharing.

Iv got 8 days on the big island coming up and would love a few free dive recommendations. My partner and i are comfortable to around 50 feet perhaps more in better conditions. So anything in that area would be great!!

Yeah, been there myself, my brother and I got stuck in the boonies in a 4 wheel drive!! We aired down, and used pine tree branches and rocks got us out! Took us around 3 hours to get out!! Much patience, and a good head on your shoulders is needed in those terrifying moments. I say terrifying because no one else was there, and phones did not work... It's at that very second that your brain clicks and goes into "holy crap mode" Glad you two were able to get help, that angle didn't look good, it also could have rolled to one side!

I was diving there early morning a few years ago and went nose to nose with a 20 foot whale shark! Scared the s--t outta me.

@@soulfreedive I wouldn't say friendly, but they are not to be feared. No teeth, they eat plankton. I would call them indifferent towards people.

We go to that spot and other places close by most the time you have the place to yourself because it is difficult to find and difficult to drive There is another place we go where the sand and dirt are even softer. I deflate my tires (which helps a lot) and some old car mats or carpet can get you out of a jam

Put a small 12 volt tire air pump in your truck so you can let some air out of your tires. better traction in the sand.

Yes the Hammers are typically more around this time of the year Jan-Feb. They like the pinnacle offshore there .

Your truck is not equipped for BI off-road, which would start with a mini-lift and winch. Aloha!

Aloha Louis! We can get to a lot of places with this truck. It has armor underneath so a lift is not as necessary as you might think!

@@konafreedivers3970 Crawling in loose gravel and rock requires bigger, wider tires for traction and a mini-lift for clearance. A winch would add a measure of independence. I do this all the time in my 2006 and 2015 Tacomas, and I've never called AAA.

We used to go down there with Stock 80s Toyota and jeeps before anyone knew of the area in the past. No need lift and winch. Just need local knowledge of which path to take and know your frame and bumper will take a beating. I took my new wife down there to show her my stomping grounds and my taco with a leveling kit never touched once and made it to smokin rock and back home without breaking a sweat. But I would never take my 3500 past the half way mark bwahahaha

@@louismorejohn586 yup. Born and raised there. My uncle built the road to Manuka that you guys drive on in a slightly lifted 80s toyota 4wd. I've been down there more times than I can remember in a stock 79 4wd toyota flatbed. I've been down there in my 3" coilover Tacoma without a scratch. But there are places dug up so much my hitch did touch. Because of the idiots digging up the place.... My wife gave me the green light for a brand new 6" on 33 with gearing Tacoma or a lifted diesel Zr2 lol. But that's how we Ka'u people roll 😂

Never go by yourselves. Should go with other friends for just that reason. And never leave your trucks and go swimming, should at least have 1 person to stay back and watch your things until somebody come back then that person or persons can enjoy the ocean after. Be safe and smart next time.

If only you and your friend forget about diving and go cruising and come back another time with more people and trucks them some go dive first and switch off after. Because you should know never go swim by yourself. # 1 rule.

Thanks for the effort of making the video, and I don't do this very often at all. But I have to give you a thumbs down for tricking me into watching it because if the I guess you'd call it "Title Video" of a burned car? And it honestly was a pretty boring video.
