The way I've always done it is, I use 20 amps to start with and let it sit overnight, next morning if all the cells are bubbling, I turn it down to 10 amps and leave it overnight again. When I check the next morning, if all the cell water is cloudy and bubbling evenly, it's done. Been doing this since the early 90's. I've never had a battery that didn't last at least 10 years.

Just a testimony for this method. I tried some thing like this. It works. 3 year old battery, Walmart Maxx- brand, had not been driven for a while and had left the interior lights on. On top of that we had a 5 day long deep freeze (Dallas). After that, voltage reading was zero. I tried to jump it. Had to leave it connected to the running second car for almost an hour and then was able to jump start it. Was not able to restart it though. Voltage reading 2.5V. Charged it traditional method, reading only around 11, even that did not hold. So, I did some thing like in this video. 200a charger was really expensive but I bought one which had 30A charge but a 100A engine start setting, a smart charger. With the 4A and 30A setting, it would go off soon after turning on. I guess the smart thing did not want to charge it. So, I used the 100A engine start setting (current stays on constantly and charging voltage at this setting was 15.4V). Did several cycles of 10 minute on/ off, then several of 45 minutes on/off. I even did one cycle of 2 hours on. The battery never got too hot (only warm to touch). The electrolyte never boiled or overflowed (only very small bubbles). No final low amp charge. After this, battery was 12.7V. Closed the vents and put it back in vehicle. Perfect start. No problem yet (several days).

You SHOULD NOT do this inside or on a patio with an upholstered couch right next to it and you SHOULD NOT do this with a cat present. If the cat gets curious about the bubbling it could get acid in its eyes. And you're not even wearing safety glasses! Dumb, dumb, dumb. This is basic common sense. Geez! And, as far a I can tell, you not only didn't test the voltage or, more importantly, do a load test followed up by a retention test. Are you just assuming the procedure worked without testing it?

This does not work. If you actually tested the capacity of these "recovered" batteries you would find that they are only 20% of what they were when new. These guys show you how the voltage is up. So what. The battery is damaged and most of the plate area is permanently corroded and not functional. The cell impedance is high. Not useful. A dead battery is a dead battery. Don't waste your money. Don't believe me? Test show the capacity test. Then when you see it's only 10 amp hours for a 80 amp hour battery you have wasted your time and money. Take the "recovered" battery apart and see all the white corrosion choked plates. Yeah, you never see anything useful in these "reconditioning" videos because it simply does not work. You can charge a good battery, but that's it. Any time a lead acid battery is not fully charged, it is degrading. They are really only good for starting batteries in cars that get driven every week or an application where they are fully charged immediately after any discharge.

First I wanna thank you for your comment. Hi. I think the comment about doing the task on a well ventilated area was a kind and polite note. It is later that the owner of the video mentions (in response) that he was doing it outside. Sorry to tell you but you have no idea what is happening in front of you. You can put in a billion amps current, the battery will draw as many amps as it can, no more. Not the amperage matters but the voltage. It needs to be high enough to energise it. As much as I am aware, the charging voltage in the car is or should be 14.4 volts. The desulphating process requires a higher voltage, somewhere around 15-16 volts. The one who knows exactly please correct me if I'm wrong.
@edwardferns
@edwardferns 4 года назад
Appreciate your post re desulphating voltage. What do you think about a 15v smps Power Supply 50A (aliexpress) - will it work to desulphate the battery, if the battery is not totally dead, i.e. brought up/showing a voltage of 10-12v?
@GabbrEL
@GabbrEL 2 года назад
I have just built my accumulator bank out of car batteries. Not ideal by far but this is what i managed to get. I've also watched a lot of videos on youtube about desulfating lead acid batteries. And I applied it! This is what I learned out of experience: If the battery under 15V or more charging voltage has any cell that does not bubble up than that battery should be discarded. If all cells react and boil than you can revive it. Not 100% but in a decent manner. I connected the battery to 25 volts charger with a max amperage of 50 amps. At that difference of voltage it drew almost all current. Obviously not all 1000 watts was used to charge it up. Most of it just boiled the electrolite and heated the cells up. Actually that was exactly what I wanted! To forcefully agitate components inside plates and to force all chemical reactions that otherwise would have not happened. Desulphation should not be done keeping the battery more than just a few seconds at a time at this voltage difference. It worked!
@Trentmatthews

This is the second utube video I've seen on this, and I think you need a multimeter to really understand what's going on. My guess is that the "200amp" mode uses a higher VOLTAGE to force some current into the battery to de-sulfate the battery. If you check the voltage of the charger, I'm guessing it will be like 15v or more in 200 amp mode, and a lower voltage like 14v in the regular charging modes. It doesn't matter how many AMPS the charger is capable of, if the battery is sulfated and won't take a charge, it's because the resistance is high. No matter how many AMPS you offer it, the battery won't accept any of them. You need higher VOLTAGE to force some current into the battery to break up the sulfation. If you had dc clamp meter, you'd see that not very much current is going into the battery at the beginning, and later more goes in, but no where near 200amps. So you could probably do the same thing with a small charger that has adjustable voltage to force it to take a charge and desulfate. Maybe you need 16v? I don't know. But it would be most helpful to measure what you're doing so we understand the science behind this process. As current goes into the battery and it starts to desulfate, it will accept more current and recover the battery. However, this only works if it's a sulfated battery. If one of the cells has shorted or failed, it won't work.

I've seen this method here on RU-vid but there's another step that should be done the way I understand it. After you complete this rejuvenation method you're supposed to put it on a trickle charger for 3 days which is supposed to help the battery hold a good charge for a longer period of time. The rejuvenation method works to bring the battery back but a slow charge supposedly helps it hold a charge better by gently slow charging it.

I've seen a few of these videos where people have the '200A charger'. Sweet Project Cars also on U Tube does the same thing, but no one shows the battery terminal voltage when they first apply the leads nor the current passing through the battery. They just hook up the charger and say, 15 mins on, one hour off. It may be the first current pulse when you apply the leads might spike for millseconds to 200A then drops back to normal charge current. I doubt very much there is a 200A continuous flow through the battery. Things would get very very hot and the terminal voltage would skyrocket at 200A continuous.
@ashbucharon8263
@ashbucharon8263 4 года назад
You are talking about an automatic charger and you are correct. However, the chargers that they are using are manual chargers, if you set them on 200amp they will never drop down, they'll stay there at 200 amp till you turn it off or the charger blows up. You need a manual charger to do that battery restoration trick, like an Associated Equipment Model US20 or one like it.
@arthurgiannakis2156
@arthurgiannakis2156 4 года назад
@@ashbucharon8263 No I was talking about a manual charger. What you are talking about is a constant current charger. For constant current the charger voltage to the battery terminals must continually rise. So lets assume what you say is correct. 200A passing through the battery, continuously (not transient) at a start charge voltage of say 14V (typical lead acid battery charge voltage). By simple math that's almost 3000W of power dissipated in the battery while its charging. That's similar to turning on an old radiator heater and letting it run. Very hot. But that's not all. If its constant 200A as time goes by the charge voltage must increase to maintain that 200A for 15 mins, so the power dissipated in the battery also keeps going up. By the end of the first 15 minute cycle at increasing power dissipation, that battery would be smoking, spitting, ejecting steam and warping. Explosion is almost certainly guaranteed. You wouldnt even get to the second 15 minute cycle. But it doesn't appear to be affected in any way at all in the video. We see bubbling after 5 attempts but that's it. I can do (and have done) the same with a 10A manual charger. Since there is no current or volt meter to monitor the battery charge, no one knows what's actually happening. But I'm pretty certain that there is not 200A continuous going through the battery for anything more than a few seconds and only when its first connected.. After that the charge current drops rapidly to some regular value. Believe me, I'm happy to be proved wrong by empirical evidence.

You are 100% wrong. Letting any car battery sit dead for long periods of time does NOT create permanent damage. The acid turns into a crystal on the lead plates. When recharged, (usually you will need a vintage charger without overcharge protection) the crystals on the plates dissolves and returns to sulfuric acid. No damage done. And it is also is impossible to make a car battery last forever. When you use a car battery, whether you charge it, or discharge it, it is transferring electricity, which causes heat on the lead plates. What happens when something heats up? It expands. Then when it cools down it contracts back to its original form, which, over time, causes the lead particles from the plates to break off, and build up at the bottom of the battery. When too much lead particles build up on the bottom of the battery, then what happens? It starts touching positive and negative plates which causes shorts. That is the ONLY cause of a batteries failure. That’s why worn out batteries get so hot when charged. There are ways to reduce lead plates from breaking apart, (aka shedding of the plates). One, is to always use a slow charger, because the less the current, the less heat will be created. Two, is to use a “Pulse charger”. What this is, is a charger that pulses, meaning it charges the battery for like half a second, then turns off for half a second, so it gives the battery time to cool down, so the plates don’t get too warm and expand very much. So there really is nothing you can do to “renew/recondition” a battery, unless you take the plates out, melt them down and make new plates, and clean the lead particles inside the bottom of the battery case. So any video/ad that advertises “battery reconditioning” that just shows them putting in random shit like baking soda, or epsom salt, is a scam. Baking soda, won’t do anything but neutralize the acid, which will make the battery have no chemical reaction, and will bring the voltage down to zero. Epsom salt, does not renew a battery. It kind of boosts the conductivity of the battery electrolyte, barely, and is not necessary at all.

I use retail battery additives, and my battery is 17 years old. I resorted to zapping it with high voltage recently. It finally got back to excellent working condition after adding a solar panel that supplied 60mA on a very bright day. The car consumes 30-40mA while sleeping. I can feel the CCA slowly increasing. I expect a very long life for this battery. I bought the additive in bulk after observing magical effects of it while playing with another battery. The other battery expired when one cell reversed polarity from too much charging. Before expiring, that battery lasted significantly longer than what I was expecting. Chemical desulfation does work. But, there is a ceiling for their effectiveness. Once the ceiling is reached, other means have to be used. The ceiling appeared for me at the 17 year mark.
@herobrine00700
@herobrine00700 2 года назад
@@fungames24 its not about how old a battery is. its about how used it is. whenever electricity is being transferred, in or out, it creates heat which makes the plates contract. It happens in any type of battery chemistry. thats why we are coming out with solid state batteriee. with a solid electrolyte, it takes a lot longer for the heat cycles to break it down. Now listen, a car battery can absolutely last 20+ years, IF only being used for powering tiny electronics that draw less then a amp, and charge at less then an amp. its simple, theres a lot less heat. using a car battery in a car, the starter draws TONS of current, then it gets charged by the alternator at ALOT of current. thats the problem.

It depends what battery you have a 6 V or a 12 V then you would use the voltage that is required for your battery. I hope this helps you and if you can leave me a thumbs up.

Something not mentioned in the video is that you need a manually operated charger, if you set them on 200amp they will never drop down, they'll stay there at 200 amp till you turn it off or the charger blows up. You need a manual charger to do that battery restoration trick, like an Associated Equipment Model US20 or one like it. It will not work with an automatic charger because they will drop back to normal amperage or even turn off automatically.

Ash Bucharon Thank you for that information the one that I am using does have a timer and the stay at 200 A and I can set it for 15 minutes and it shuts down, but I do know that you are correct there are some that just start out at 200 A and drop down this is an older one that I bought many years ago and it works the way that I needed to. thank you for your comment.
@jayyk31
@jayyk31 2 года назад
Thats what you manually turn it off after approx 15 mins. I use my old 225a craftsman charger for this. It has a timer which makes it nice but I still watch it.
@texasfossilguy
@texasfossilguy Год назад
@@jayyk31 you could also use a grounded light timer, but that might be bad on the battery charger, I do not know. But at least you could set it and forget it at that point. Run the timer down, then turn the charger switch off, then turn the timer back to the 15 mins, turn it back on and let it run out every time. Something like that.

Hi, I am from SA. I listened to your video. Are you talking about a 200 amp charger or is it 200ah? Here we don't have 200 amp chargers. What size amp can I use for my batteries? Is a 60amp fine? Will it do the same work? What do you suggest?

@buildingwithpapa 3 года назад
That is correct but this is a battery that I had in one of my cars that was sitting out at my warehouse and I wasn’t starting it so the battery went completely dead then once I revived it I would only start it once a week and it started every time, when I sold it it started up and drove off I did that for probably six months before I sold the car never had any issues and if you look at my other videos I believe this one was for my Mustang and I show with the tester in the mustang then it had the right voltage and was operating fine. And thank you for your comment.
