I conducted an experiment when germinating pepper and eggplant seeds over the past few weeks, following this method. In a nursery flat, I planted one row of each variety in plain soil, followed by a row with banana peel. I covered it for the first week as described in the video. Additionally, I used a heat mat. Results: germination of some varieties was better than others, but overwhelmingly the seeds without banana germinated better. There are only TWO seedlings in the whole tray that germinated in the banana rows. They do look healthy, but so do the other seedlings. I will continue to watch their growth and see how it compares to the non-banana plants. I did do some research prior to the experiment, and there is a scientific basis for this method. I found several research papers that discussed ethylene gas as something that can help break germination in "some plants". Most plants mentioned were not things you would grow in the garden. I also think it's valid that the banana peel would help hold moisture by the seed and offer nutrients to the seedling, so these results were disappointing. Caveats: I used seed packet seed and saved garden seed rather than seeds straight out of a fresh pepper. Overall pepper germination was not great and I'm hoping more might still germinate (one sprouted yesterday) but so far none of the pepper seedlings are from the banana rows. The two banana peel seedlings that sprouted were Black Beauty eggplant, which had 100% germination in the non-banana row. What needs to be fixed about this experiment? Seeds should have been planted in separate trays instead of rows. If it's the ethylene gas that affects germination, then the neighboring rows might have benefited from the gas while something in the banana peel might have directly inhibited the other rows. A follow-up experiment might include 3 trays: one with banana peel, one without, and one with banana on the side but not in contact with seedlings. It is possible my bananas were sprayed with something the seeds didn't like. Maybe washing bananas prior to peeling would be a good idea. It could also be down to climate (high desert, here) or even the variety or freshness of pepper seeds. I'll continue to experiment and suggest anyone else interested does the same and shares their info. The varieties I planted were Black Beauty eggplant, Rosa Bianca eggplant, Neimat's Batir eggplant, Chimayo pepper, Shishito pepper, and Pimento pepper. (The last two usually take a long time to germinate.) All my best to Dr. Obi with many thanks for introducing this interesting method. (It clearly works for you!)
@dr_obisgarden
@dr_obisgarden Год назад
Wow! Thanks for sharing the results of your detailed method. I'm not surprised at your results since you used seed packets. I've also noticed that the method works best with fresh seeds. I don't know why it is so but it may probably have to do with increased dormancy in the dry seeds. The ethylene produced in banana peel is very small compared to the banana fruit itself so it may not be sufficient for dry seeds. Also, when using the banana peel, cutting it into pieces promotes faster break down to make nutrients available to seedlings faster. Thanks once again for sharing. Happy gardening.
@KateWrath
@KateWrath Год назад
@@dr_obisgarden Thank you. This does make sense! I'll have to try this method using fresh seeds. The only thing is that I can't get fresh seeds of the varieties I want to grow at the time I need to grow them. Maybe I'll add some standard jalapeños to the mix. Those are always available and I do use them on everything.
@sa-eedadaniels6853
@sa-eedadaniels6853 Год назад
@Kate Wrath I find with the packet seeds they need to be kept moist, otherwise they don't sprout. If I plant with fresh seeds, I usually have better results. I have bell peppers and 3 different kinds of chilli peppers growing from fresh seeds. I'm going to try the banana method with some chillies I bought today : habanero, Thai and cayenne. I planted jalapeños from bought seeds and I kept them moist, watered twice a day (we are currently enjoying a very hot summer), and within roughly 30 days, I had flowers developing on my plants.. Hope this helps!

If the container is big or if growing directly in the ground, it's okay to grow 2 together. I wish I could find plastic bottles with the wide cap, the water bottles I have won't stand with the small cap. With the 9 and 6 hole trays, sometimes I'd have the tray taking space with just 1 or 2 very small seedlings and more than half of the mini tray empty. With the k cups, I can get rid of them as I transplant each.

@corbeau-_-
@corbeau-_- Год назад
@@UMadUCauseBad it depends. I use coffeegrind, bananapeel and egg shell as fertiliser. It depends on the plant's needs... Often it helps that the banana peel is always a bit moist and retains moisture for a while. Coconut peel does the same. I live in a much colder climate, sometimes I uuse toilet paper and wrap it in to make it speed up a little. With pepper seeds I use a little device that warms it up. It's about meeting the plant's needs - it will definitely not be the same for every plant. Experiment a bit - or find out what's in bananapeel and check the needs of plants in scientific articles. I've looked in to stuff, but since my climate isn't your climate, results might vary... Heat is the biggest problem here... And moisture in the air... For me, dunking a seed in water before I plant it helps a lot. Some seeds I put in the refrigerator. Others I need to freeze - to emulate winter. Some seeds won't germinate if I don't put them in the refrigerator for a month... In sand... (because nutrients will mess things up). I hope someone has a list - but I suppose such people won't even bother to look at this video -.- And like said, the list might not work in all climates, situations.

I found that just putting the seeds in the ground and watering was all that I needed to do to grow every variety of peppers that I wanted. (And I am not bothered by the fruit flies seen in this video.)

There're many different ways of growing crops. You choose the one that works for you. But you can try other methods occasionally.

Beautiful chillies well done. My chillies and peppers haven’t done much this year with the U.K. weather, but I will definitely try your hack with the banana peel next year, thank you 👍

This is Great. In a Bigger Container i would add a couple of scoops of Earth Worms to aerate the Soil that way the Plants would Triple in Size and Production. I Grew up on a 4th of an acre & We Grew Almost everything. I have never Tried the Banana Peel Method. I would put the seeds in the Fridge for a few days before Planting to fool the seeds into thinking it's Spring time. THANKS FOR SHARING !!! I will enjoy watching. I Grow Food for People that can't grow Plants & Teach them How to be Self Sufficient. ☺👌✌🖖🖖🖖
