Regarding how they used to build things.......In the early 80s, a coworker of mine had a little Toyota pickup truck. Most of us there were motorheads. He wasn't. One day he was asking what to do, because his oil light came on. He bought the truck new. "Check it". He looked a little confused. "When was the last time you checked it?" Well, he had never checked it. "When was the last time you changed your oil?" Changed it??? Never. We were getting kinda stunned. "How many miles does it have on it?" About 70,000 WTF!?!?!?! Damn good engine. Never had an oil change or even been topped off. 70,000 miles to get the oil light to come on.

I have a similar story with a Toyota. The girlfriend I met the summer of 1991 had a Toyota Corolla GT-S, I think that was the model. I think it was a 1988 or 1989 model, hard to remember over 30 years later, and had over 50,000 miles on it already. The second or third month of dating I decided to check the oil in the car and it wasn’t touching the dipstick at all! Plus it was orange and burned looking. I opened the valve cover oil fill cap and the cams and everything in the top of the head had the orange film covering it! She had never checked or changed the oil, she didn’t know she was supposed to. The motor was still running strong and not making a single noise! I was going to do a flush out before changing the oil but didn’t have time for that. So I just changed the oil and filter using Castrol GTX. A couple thousand miles later I changed it again and just running the Castrol GTX cleaned all the orange gunk out of the motor. It looked brand new again. I kept changing it for her during the time we were together and I think she had it another 4-5 years after we were no longer together. We stayed in touch over the years and she said it was still running like new when she sold it.

WalMart and Autozone batteries are both made by the same company: Johnson Controls. However, the German company Bosch may have recently "acquired" (bought out) Johnson Controls. Periodically check your car battery terminals for corrosion, and brush off with a wire brush if corrosion appears. There are corrosion protection chemical sprays that can help ward off or delay the appearance of corrosion.

I bought an 84 month (7 years) Toyota battery from the Toyota dealership for about $160 for my Sequoia and needed a battery for my 1971 VW Karmann Ghia, so I bought one of those batteries for it as it was cheaper than the 4 year Advance Auto "Diehard" battery for $275. Same prices at AutoZone. Walmart batteries are cheaper than the discount auto parts stores but still only 4 years and can't beat the dealer price or years.. Always check with the dealership parts as sometimes they have OEM parts cheaper like CV-axels and rotors. All it takes is a phone call. Result for me was 3 more years and over $100 cheaper than the discount places.....a no brainier.

Watching your vids for a while, respect most of your opinions/tech advice, just to say, I'm one of the folks you mentioned, bought a 2016 chevy colorado for 25K$ around 2020, only 51k miles on it compared to the nearly 40k+$ they wanted for new and after seeing all the recalls on the ones made after 2016, glad I made a good choice, only problem I had, a year ago, had O2 sensor go bad, the one right under the engine cover, paid less than 100.00 for repair and I brought the part to be installed, the mechanic does have his own shop, pro, but, I used to help him when I worked at a parts shop, (starts with an O) and I also helped him in the shop working on the/my vehicle repair he is one of the old school techs, he charges the rates like other repair shops, he and I just get along well, it helps to know your mechanic. retired military, parts tech/runner.

If you come to my Autozone, we test your battery, starter, and alternator. If you need a battery, we put one in. If you need a headlight or taillight, we can usually put those into most vehicles. Our warranties don’t have a catch.. we will get you the replacement if the parts go bad. Autozone doesn’t pay me very well, but on the right day you’ll find advice & help which can save you getting ripped off by a mechanic.. mechanics are charging about $150 per hour lately! I just bought a Duralast battery for my 2013 Subaru Legacy because they were the only ones who had the battery size and output I needed on a Sunday because the battery in the car was dead. This happened 2 weeks ago. I managed to get the car there, borrowed a tool, installed the battery, and was on my way. Truly convenient and the car was working again within 30 minutes. Sure it was not cheap (about $150) but not having to wait until Monday to get a battery and not having the car running for 24 hours was much more convenient than saving $40.

I drove it and towed a loaded u-haul trailer across the US (I-40 San Diego to Charlotte) in 2021 with zero issues. Other than having an upgraded transmission cooler installed, the van had only received routine maintenance and worn-out parts replacement (engine and gearbox fluid changes, transmission service, spark plugs and wires, battery, starter, tires, shocks, brakes, front hub bearing assemblies, and steering system components). Parts are relatively inexpensive and the thing is pretty easy to work on (I have experience in the industry as a mechanic). The check engine light has only come on once, and it was an EVAP code that required a new gas cap to resolve. 😂

I can tell you from recent experience that older cars have less problems. Recently was given a 2008 Buick Lucerne. I've already had a bunch of issues in a few months. Put in over 2k in repairs. And have persistent issues even now that I have to schedule to get looked at AGAIN. Before that I had a 2004 Honda Accord. Barely ever had issues with it. Just minor stuff occasionally. I think besides regular maintenance I probably put in somewhere between 500-1k in repairs over 11 years. And before that I had a 96 civic that was probably about the same but I only had that for 5 years but was in the family since brand new. Luckily like I said the Buick was given to me for free from a neighbor that passed away but it's given me WAY more issues in the few months I've had it than the prior two cars COMBINED did over a total of around 17 years. Its noce having all the fancy new tech thats offered in the buick (it was probably fancy in 2008) but it seems to just cause more issues.

They wanted an electric car but I told them even if they were cheaper I refuse to buy 1. For me it's all about safety. Yeah, charging stations are going up all over the place, but they are always off to the side or behind stores. That just makes you a sitting duck the entire time the car is charging. 2nd is the fires. These batteries burn hotter & need a special extinguisher to put them out. Not every rural fire dept even has one. AND they can reignite multiple times. Sometimes days later. Our homeowners insurance doesn't want them parked in an attached garage & the charging station has to be further away from our house than our driveway is long.
