Synopsis: In 2013, film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki suddenly announced his retirement at the age of 72. But he couldn't shake his burning desire to create. After an encounter with young CGI animators, Miyazaki embarked on a new endeavor, his first project ever to utilize CGI. But the artist, who had been adamant about hand-drawn animation, confronted many challenges. The film even faces the danger of being cancelled. Can an old master who thinks he's past his prime shine once again? This program goes behind the scenes over two years as Miyazaki overcomes struggles to create his short film using CGI.

My caveat is that I would say it does a disservice to call Miyazaki's body of work a "career". He has sustained himself, to be sure... but what he has produced is so much more than mere sustenance.

@@Ungtartog I like that he’s competent; hell, I would do the same thing. But I’d rather not push myself over the limit. The second I get past my prime, I’d let someone else do the work (unless it means milking what I’ve created like Nickelodeon did Spongebob after Stephen Hillenburg died).

Or perhaps have an anxiety over not finishing his masterpiece. It's kinda scary to think about leaving a work undone in the middle especially if you treasure what you're doing , you could see the passion he has on his work. That's what is at stake from having a very creative and imaginative mind.

@@user-archonquest Miyazaki is a deep and meditative man... I suggest he has likely already reflected on what you say and come to peace with this notion. I have no doubt that his animators are not merely hired hands, but that he is investing them with his intent should he pass before it's completion.

He's like "so many things to do, so little time" because life has a limit tho. You can't extend it for a hundred years more, unlike what you have done that became a huge impact to others, like his animations.

My mom used to show me all his movies when I was a little boy which inspired me and made me who I am to a certain point. I can’t thank him enough for some wonderful moments I’ll never forget. I’ll show his movies to my children for sure and hopefully they to their childrens… ❤️🌅

I like that they show him being harsh with his animators, as odd as it sounds. The anime industry in Japan is notoriously difficult and soul-crushing, and both Ghibli and Miyazaki-san's standards are very high. So many people have this almost Santa-like image in their head of him... But the reality is that he is harsh on his teams because of the industry and his own high standards. That being said, he's not doing it to be cruel. He's scolding them almost like a father would scold a child who is not living up to their potential. He's not doing it to be unkind. He does it because he wants his staff to do their absolute best, for their sake and the sake of the studio's productions.

He's an artist though. Art will always be in his mind no matter how old he becomes. I'm not a professional artist, drawing became my hobby so I can pursue a more stable job but everytime I get bored, there will be a pencil in my hand. I do it because I need to put my thoughts and imagination into paper. I can't even imagine what Miyazaki must have gone through after retirement. Let's just accept that he'll make stories and art until he can't anymore.

I never said he wasn't a well respected and loved artist who does not love what he does. As an older person speaking to an older person, I was very comfortably telling him to just take a break and relax. He deserves it and he well earned it. More people get burned out than you can even fathom. Let him relax. Nothing more to it. That's it. So, no need to look more into it. Lol

When you look at the ill state of feature animation today, we can clearly see that Hayao Miyazaki has done absolutely nothing for the western world. Besides, it is written at 1 Corinthians 3:19 that the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, so Miyazaki is not as wise as people think.

The bottom line is that I can care less about what Hayao Miyazaki does next because he's wasting his life continuing a vain career, or as Ecclesiastes 4:4 would put it, he is essentially "chasing after the wind". Also contrary to what people say, Hayao Miyazaki isn't as wise as people say. It is written in 1 Corinthians 3:19,20 "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it is written: “He catches the wise in their own cunning.” And again: “Jehovah knows that the reasonings of the wise men are futile.”
