This story has really helped me understand the concept of kamma. It has taught me that our negative thoughts and actions are stored in our minds. Wherever we go, our kamma will always be by our side, and we can't escape the consequences of our actions. The punishment doesn't seem to be justified. I understand that the resident monk was bad to an individual of a high calibre, but wasn't being reborn for those couple hundred births enough to wash away his negative karma. Something is not adding up here. 🤔 I suppose there is more bad karma that is contributing to all of this. Would love to have anybody's take. Like always, I am very grateful to be able to listen to this Dharma. Must have been the result of some good actions in the past that led me to this. My sincere gratitude to Watsanfran!

Somehow doing bad deeds toward an Arahant will multiply the bad kamma effect, much much more than doing bad things toward ordinary people according to many Suttas. Remember how Devadatta injured Buddha's feet? That very deed causes him to be born in Avici, the lowest plane of hell, up until now and still got many eons to go. Scary isn't it? All of us, as Putujana (not enlightened yet), still lack of wisdom and don't understand how does kamma work. It is terrifying to think of our past lives as we tend to do all of things with ignorance, either good or bad kamma. Thus we need Dhamma to keep reminding us about carefulness and mindfulness.

Even if one sees a dirty beggar on the street, don't judge him, he might become an arahant even in this very life. Best to show compassion especially when it is hard to do so, to make sure we keep our own kamma in check

I wonder if the results of his evil Kamma could have been reduced if he had sought out the Buddha of that time, or arahant disciples, confessed his misdeed and made an aspiration to never do evil. It was a horrible deed but not an anantarika kamma.

The strength of Kamma is affected by a lot of factors. One of it is to whom the kamma is done. Since he did it to an arahant, the kamma he made was so strong. In addition, after realized that what he had done was wrong, he kept his negative thought in his mind (blaming, regret, frustrated). Those kinds of thoughts are what made his bad kamma even stronger.
