NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP!!! | TED LASSO Episodes 2x09 & 2x10 Reaction and Commentary

Some things in life are meant to be fun, and some things in life are meant to be sad. Which is why it’s always confused me that funerals have the word FUN in them. Because honestly, how is anyone supposed to be sad at an event with Fun in the name?? This week’s video answers that question for me! My first time watching Ted Lasso, the Beardisode and No Weddings and a Funeral was filled with fun, shenanigans, and emotional moments of clarity about death.
I truly enjoyed reacting to these episodes for the first time, it was delightful, dark, and entertaining - there was drama, action, and reaction from Sam! We hope you enjoy, and please remember to eat your fruits and veggies!
Sincerely, Sam

Hannah has been telling in interviews lately that the day they shot the funeral, her own father was having emergency open heart surgery. So much of that emotion from Rebecca is Hannah being present in the moment.

Brendan Hunt is a massive Arsenal fan and Thierry Henry is the greatest Arsenal player of all time. Brendan writing him into the script was definitely abusing his power as a writer in the best way possible. As a lifelong Arsenal fan, if I was writing a show like this, I would have done the exact same lol.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but "Beard After Hours" is a parody/spoof/tribute of the Martin Scorsese film "After Hours". It follows the same plot -- after a long stressful day, a man goes on a wild night out. In the first season, Ted asks everybody what their favorite Scorsese film was. So it's a bit of a call back to a previous scene. I enjoyed the Beard episode. They don't give away too much about Coach Beard. We don't even know his real name, and it's a great break from the intense drama which happened the episode before.

To go even deeper, After Hours was a retelling of James Joyce's Ulysses which is a retelling of Homer's Odyssey myth. Odysseus must descend into Hades and go through trials to find his way back to his love. Joyce's Ulysses retelling is a 700 page "stream of consciousness" novel of one day in Dublin and Scorsese's After Hours takes place in NYC over one night. All of Odysseus' trials have parallels with the scenes of the film (and thus, the Beardisode). I love that the cinematography is so different in the Beardisode. From the dark alleys to the surreal club, the woman's apartment and finally the glare of the soccer stadium. None of this is at all like the style of the rest of the show. Another great reaction, you two.

The sports commentator who says "I hate Coach Beard" is Thierry Henry - an actual LEGEND of soccer. He's considered by many to be one of the best to ever play. One thing about the shows "ups and downs" (back and forth between comedy and drama), it's worth noting that one of the creators is Bill Lawrence, who also created Scrubs - a show that also did a great job being both a laugh out loud comedy as well as a heart tearing drama.

One fun thing about the Beardisode -- it's almost entirely an homage (with pieces pulled whole cloth) to a little-seen Martin Scorcese art-house dark comedy called After Hours that came out in 1985. It's an amazing, surreal, discomfiting film that's absolutely worth a watch to see Marty take a shot at doing a low-budget Jim Jarmusch style art film.

18:20 - [your] description of "filler episode" isn't quite accurate for Carol Of The Bells / After Hours. Apple was so pleased by the reception to Season 1 that they asked for another two episodes in Season 2. Unfortunately the Writing Room had already fully mapped-out Season 2, so the two additional episodes had to be stand-alone from necessity. Season 2 might have looked a little different with a bit more notice!

I loved the symbolism of the blue moon. Not only does it signify strange occurrences, but Blue Moon is the fan anthem of Man City; you can hear them singing it in the crowd during the game in the previous episode. The blue moon following him in the sky throughout the episode symbolizes the Man City loss still haunting Beard throughout the whole night no matter how he tries to take his mind off it. I also liked the use of the song in the soundtrack-they played the more upbeat doo-wop version over the montage of Richmond getting thrashed by Man City, and then during this episode they played a slower ballad version while Beard was getting thrashed by Jamie's dad and his friends.

"Beard After Hours" is a brilliant piece of cinema unto itself, in the midst of one of the greatest shows of all-time. Pretty gutsy to take a whole new direction for an entire episode this deep into a narrative. Yet another reason to love Ted Lasso. 👍❤

To get the short bit out of the way: What an emotional, wild ride of an episode! As someone who's not a fan of Sambecca, I can't say I was disappointed they broke up, but I like that it was so amicable, that Rebecca acknowledged her feelings about it, and Toheeb Jimoh's abs (what? I'm only human). And that scene with Ted and Rebecca's stories intercut with one another? Oof. I agree on Isaac and the other boys as well, they looked fly as hell in their suits! Now for the longer stuff, which as always, feel free to skim or skip! On the Jamie of it all (you know I had to comment ...), a few things. One, it originally came out of left field for me, too, primarily because I burned through the show so quickly and at the time was Team Roy so I wasn't paying much attention to Jamie in the background. But on subsequent watches, I noticed that while not as blatant as in season 1, there are many indications in season 2 as well of Jamie holding a torch for Keeley. For example: whenever he greets people in a room, he always greets her separately; episode 2, he followed her for an hour to ask her for help because she's the one he feels safest with; episode 3 he instantly perks up and gives her a Look when she comes into the locker room, then a Look again when she leaves; episode 4 he's quite soft with her; episode 6 he watches her leave Ted's office; episode 7 he watches her leave the boot room; and of course, this episode eyes her up the whole time and his smile quickly fades when she expands her "nice suit!" to everyone instead of just him. So it's definitely been telegraphed, just very subtly. Two, I don't think the confession should be taken the same way as such things normally are. It wasn't Jamie swooping in, it was merely a further show of his growth. No way no how season 1 Jamie would have put himself out there like that, expressing his feelings despite knowing he would be rejected. Here, that's exactly what he did, and he didn't expect or wait for an answer either - he just said his piece and left. He acknowledged that it was unfair, and apologized, but also it was brought on by the weirdness of the funeral. Since we give grace to the other characters who acted weirdly (Roy, for instance), I think we should give Jamie the same grace. Now, is part of Jamie hoping Keeley might have a change of heart? Probably. But that was neither his intention nor his expectation. Three, he didn't say he came back _for_ Keeley (in addition to getting away from his dad), he said he came back _because_ of her, which is a small but crucial distinction. After all, if it weren't for Keeley telling him to talk to Ted, he may not have had the courage to do so, meaning he wouldn't have gotten back onto the team, and god knows where he'd be if that hadn't happened. If you remember, too, he didn't seek her out to ask about Richmond, he simply wanted to talk through his crisis. That talk _led_ to asking back onto the team, but it didn't start out that way. Four, up until the confession, at no point did Jamie act inappropriately towards her. He didn't make a move or trash Roy or reference their relationship or even pull her aside to speak privately. He confined his feelings to looks alone, so I think it's a safe assumption that if the funeral hadn't spurred him to confess, he may well not have done so at all. If his goal was to get her back, he did a very poor job of executing it. Even his confession was very respectful. He recognized that she's in a relationship, he stated that he knew it wasn't fair, he thanked her for seeing in him what no one else did, he expressed his feelings succinctly, then he left the ball in her court to do with what she wants. In fact, Roy phrased his confession quite similarly, which I doubt was an accident by the writers. Five, I think this episode definitely showed that Keeley is not without some latent feelings/attraction of her own. She checked him out when he came up to her in the suit, she looked past Roy to him in the pews unprompted, and she was so stunned at his confession that Roy startled the bejeesus out of her. If she felt nothing for him anymore, I don't think those beats would have been added in. Plus, as Jamie pointed out, he's become exactly the man she always wanted him to be. She broke up with him because he wasn't - but now he is. Obviously that isn't to say she necessarily feels the same or more for him than she does for Roy. But I think it _does_ mean his confession wasn't quite so cut-and-dry for her as she (or the audience) probably thought. Your opinions are your own, of course! I just thought I'd present my devil's advocate position as some food for thought :)

Glad you enjoyed the Beardisode, I know it split the audience (and was maybe a bit jarring when watching week to week if you were expecting some of the emotional fallout from the previous epsode), but I thought it was really well done. I hadn't watched After Hours before, so grateful for Ted Lasso for making me watch that too. Completely agree that Phil Dunster deserves more recognition for his acting, he's hilarious, but then also gave that performace in ep 8, which broke my heart. I also think the 'love' confession is more shocking after Jamie and Roy seem to have reached a new understanding between them. Just awkward all round.

I normally love character focused episodes, but I really didn't enjoy Beard After Hours. I feel like even though the episode was focused on him we didn't really learn much about him. And because the events were so wild it felt a bit out of touch when the rest of the series is pretty grounded. But I did enjoy the interactions between him and the Richmond boys. Episode 10 really hits hard, though. I kind of coasted through it the first time I watched it but the second time was about four months after my father passed away and I sobbed like a child for obvious reasons. The back and forth between Ted and Rebecca's stories was a pretty masterful way of telling the tales, their pain and relationships with their fathers very different but both having that anger and betrayal on top of the grief. It's a bit of a stealth episode, because you might not pay as much attention to the emotions in it the first time, because the humour doesn't draw you in (except, of course, Sassy and her excellent conversation with Rupert). But on a rewatch of the series, knowing the things from this episode, several things about Ted become so much clearer and makes it even more devestating when you get back to this place.

When watching or reading something where you're dying to find out what happens next you can get frustrated with an episode that focuses more on character development or is literally just one long flashback, but on rewatch you will probably appreciate it a lot more.
