These mods solved all of my performance issues in Minecraft!
I started with Optifine, and I would love to see it improve, but so far I've stuck with Sodium, and I really want to see Nvidium and VulkanMod grow into something more!
Which mod do you use and which would you like to see improve?
Hi!
Welcome to RelaxPlay!
A description of what all mods do can be found on their respective mod pages.
Key Mod(s):
Sodium (modrinth.com/mod/sodium)
/ discord
Optifine (www.optifine.net/downloads)

Nvidium (modrinth.com/mod/nvidium)
/ discord
VulkanMod (modrinth.com/mod/vulkanmod)

Mods I generally use:
- Better F3 (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Blur (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Continuity (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Cull Leaves (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)

- Fabric API (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/... Indium (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/... Iris (irisshaders.net/)
- Lithium (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Phosphor (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Sodium (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Mod Menu (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
-Mouse wheelie (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)

- ResolutionControl+ (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Terralith 2.0 (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
- Sound Physics (www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...)
My System:
- NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2060 6GB
- i7 9700k
- 32GB 3200mhz RAM
- 2560 x 1440 144hz IPS Display (Running the game at 1080p due to performance issues at native resolution in combination with ray traced shaders)
I can achieve about 45-60FPS with my current System and Mod setup (using RTX Shaders, other shaders give performance upwards of 70-100fps). Overall, a playable experience.

Just a heads up, none of the mods are compatible with each other, with the exclusion of Nvidium and Sodium. Nvidium requires sodium to run, hence the similar name! Edit: Nvidium will actually run on any 16xx series card or above as they also use the Turing architecture. I made the mistake of saying it was 20xx series and above, sorry about that!

Vulkan sounds like it might be very good in the future but seeing the FPS not having an edge over sodium, I'd still pick sodium today. Maybe that will change to vulkan/nvidium (but can't be nvidium until I get away from my 1050 ti lol) in a few years time when they're both more developed, feature complete, and compatible. Though vulkan may never be compatible with a lot of mods so it sounds like they're really aiming for a vanilla experience there.
@relaxplay7
@relaxplay7 9 месяцев назад
Vulkan definitely has some struggles ahead if they want to be an alternative option in the future, as like you said, mod compatibility might be a concern due to many developers using OpenGL. Though because of that it looks like Vulkan's team is taking matters into their own hands and they'll be building their own shader/path tracer, if they get the resources to do so. For now though it'll be sodium until these mods mature and hopefully get the attention they need to grow!

Im hoping vulkan mod gets more mature, and then merged into base game; that would solve most compatibility issues, and you could have the optimization of something like sodium, with the MUCH more performant vulkan renderer powering it. It would also allow for vanilla Minecraft performance to be reasonable. Edit: real raytracing shaders would also become possible(similar to mincreaft RTX in bedrock), due to vulkan having access to GPU rt cores, which I believe opengl does not.

another thing about optifine is that even though it is technically only supported by Forge, the mod Optifabric allows the optifine mod file to work with fabric and other fabric mods, which is actually the reason I'm still using it to this day.
@steinkoloss7320

You know that you can also just turn sodium into "kinda optifine" with a few addons? Iris allows shaders, sodium extra gives more options.
@keegie_creeper146
@keegie_creeper146 8 месяцев назад
@@steinkoloss7320 yes, I've done that, but the stability only goes so far when you increase your render distance. After a certain point, you could be getting 400 fps, but still get a frame stutter every 5-8 seconds. Optifine doesn't give as much performance, but it is more stable and reliable in my opinion, especially if you've got an overkill gpu

This is super freaky to get recommended this but I did this same test a week ago myself but without optifine. I used separate profiles on the same pre generated world but with default settings, I got a pretty big performance boost by disabling the hud and using the nvidia overlay to measure fps instead. Disabling the hud is not very useful in normal play so I'd recommend using the mod Exordium to limit the huds fps, it's not as good as using f1 but it really increases performance. The only downside is it's not compatible with VulkanMod
@relaxplay7
@relaxplay7 9 месяцев назад
Freaky indeed! I've heard exordium is very helpful, especially when using the F3 menu. The FPS counters I used were either in-built or dedicated mods for that, and from what I've noticed they shouldn't have affected performance. Though yes in vanilla opening the F3 menu really tanks my performance.

On the increased Nvidium render distance + shaders, Iris devs are working to add shader support to Distant Horizons, a similar render distance increasing mod that uses LODs, so I wouldn't say it's out of the picture!
@legostar55
@legostar55 2 месяца назад
It is worth noting the Nvidium will work on AMD cards eventually, probably this year. AMD's OpenGL team has indeed stated that they are working on adding the mesh shader extension to their version of OpenGL. So hopefully soon with a driver update AMD cards with RDNA 2 and newer architecture, RX 6000 series and up, will support Nvidium.
@playerzero0000
@playerzero0000 2 месяца назад
Sodium also requires the Fabric mod loader, so for those using Forge there are alternatives like Embeddium and Rubidium. Also be aware that Vulkan mod removes OpenGL completely so it will break any mod that is dependent on OpenGL. This is the reason there is no shader support as of yet since MC shaders are built on OpenGL

Especially since Phosphor/Starlight focus on "optimizing one of game's most inefficient areas-- the lighting engine" Starlight provides a nice graph on their Modrinth page, "Light engine time for generating 10404 chunks. But I do agree, I prefer to use Bobby over Distant Horizons just because in some cases I feel like I can really notice the LODs.

@@dapperblaze2 I think Nvidium + Distant Horizons would really shine because the only problem with distant horizons in the fact that you can clearly see the LODs but with a mod like Nvidium you could make the transition seemless (at least in my mind it's possible)

I would just like to say that the whole "better performance with sodium" isn't fully true, yeah most of the time it does, in fact I just got a new gpu and the performance difference went from like 60 to 500, but on my previous hardware, likely due to the integrated graphics, optifine gave way better performance, to the point that sodium was actually giving less than vanilla was. So no, sodium doesn't always give better performance, just that it usually does, and I assume, based off of past experiences, that it's due to the integrated graphics, but just in case, make sure to try out both and see the difference.

My Ryzen 3 3200g 16GB (2x8 2666 Mhz) performs best with Optifine. I have tried Sodium with Lithium, Phosphor, Iris, Indium, all that stuff. I get so much better and stable on Optifine its not even funny, so I would recommend doing some tests on your own as FPS varies ALOT by system hardware.

I heard OptiFine is more CPU-based as opposed to the other alternatives. So if you're using integrated graphics, then yes, it makes sense why OptiFine is a better choice.

I still get more fps in optifine than sodium, yes I have a potato pc. I get around 90-120 fps on optifine with 6 chunks and with 8 chunks I get 70-80 stable fps. With sodium on 6 chunks 70-80 fps and on 8 chunks unstable 35-50 fps. I found that other people has also this problem with sodium

so is it possible to use sodium nvidium and vulcan all together for the most amount of performance?
@relaxplay7
@relaxplay7 8 месяцев назад
Only two that are compatible are Sodium and Nvidium, because Nvidium uses Sodium's code to run. Vulkan rips out an API from the game, OpenGL, and replaces it with Vulkan, so many, many mods that require OpenGL to work will not work with Vulkan.

The main problem with this test is that you have only one situation, and you have no vanilla test. Also, nvidium gets much better than sodium depending on the gpu.

Comparing the "rendering" of chunks isn't really fair to other mods than Optifine. The other mods purely focus improving rendering performance FWICT. Optifine seems to be optimizing chunk generation and/or lighting calculations. You oughta compare with mods that actually handle optimizing that side of things to compare that

Definitely! I'm not super interested in the upscaling part of it, as from what I know Minecraft scales pretty well with resolution, in terms of performance, but the anti-aliasing part of it, which would make Minecraft look way better for a minimal performance drop!

Optifine is not only significantly worse than all mods, it also breaks compatibility with many other mods. Considering the fact that for Sodium you can already get all possible additional Optifine features - it's time to forget about Optifine. I don't recommend it to anyone for modern Minecraft.

You know what Minecraft code don't use multi threading and don't use full potential of hardware. It has memory duplication problem and memory jam . The light engine creates useless things and pushes it on power cores than efficiency ones . Causing lags . All these mods fixes these problems and make Minecraft run using multi threading. Bedrock works better cuz it uses multi threading. Whenever I play 1.20 it don't utilise my hardware. CPU 23% GPU 42% Fps low After mods CPU 30% stable GPU 97-100% Fps High.

optifine actually runs WORSE on my 3080, which is insane with nvidium, im rendering 32 chunks instantly with consistent 230fps (perfect for my 4k 240hz monitor), thing is it only keeps loaded chunks as a visual effect after you load them in, so restarting the world causes them to vanish.

Strange. Let's try some troubleshooting. - What CPU do you have? - How much ram do you have and how much is allocated to Minecraft? - Is VSYNC on? If so turn it off. - Just confirming this is a desktop system and not a laptop?
