That "inserting a comma" is exactly how I have felt listening to her music. I keep finding myself realizing that there are not commas in alot of what she says, which totally changes the meaning. I love that!

While Billie’s lyrics can be interpreted in many different ways, I think the main message from the song hostage is to not have a suffocating relationship where one person is almost kept captive. The setting in her video is almost like a prison, or some sort of asylum, where the guy is trying to love Billie all the while when she’s suffocating him and keeping him hostage. It’s almost like when you love someone so much you forget that you can’t be too greedy and keep them only for yourself. In the line that talks about the gold chain, I think it’s referring to the fact that the other individual in the relationship is almost like a prize, hence the gold chain, that the other one wears like it’s theirs. But I definitely think that this song has many meanings, I think that that was just the main idea.

Xanny is about everyone thinking that the need to use drugs and get drunk to be “cool”, and she is saying that they dont need.

Both Billie and her brother Finneas grew up dancing. Her first song Ocean Eyes was actually recorded after Billie injured her growth plate preventing her from continuing to dance and their teacher asked her to do a song for a contemporary dance. They uploaded the song to Soundcloud so the teacher could access it really easily. And that's when the song - and Billie - started to blow up. There's a version of Ocean Eyes showing a choreographed dance.

Hostage is about being in a relationship where you feel trapped and the other person is suffocating you.

hostage isnt really about metal illnesses. like in the music video they never really kiss and shes manipulating him by keeping herself close enough in hope for a relationship but also just out of reach because shes afraid of getting hurt by love again. and she also feels bad about it which is why you can hear her say sorry in the background and says that its not like her to be so mean because she knows shes controlling him. which is why there were the strings at the end of the video. she uses those strings to express that shes like using strings to keep him close to her and only her. like she doesnt want him to be anyone elses but hers. shes also allowing them to get to that point where they are bound to be together but purposely pushes him away which is kinda like playing with him feelings which she knows shes doing. but then at one point the "strings broke" and he realised that she was manipulating him and using him so he pushed her away in anger. but of course she was smarter and turned it around on him telling him it was his fault instead. and then they split. but then he came back again because he still loved her. him coming back showed that she had complete power over him and could do pretty much anything. and the strings cocooning him showed that he will always be a prisoner for his feelings for her. and he knows that they will never be together but he will always be hers.

Hostage i believe to be about someone who has had their heart stomped on and is finally dating again, they are falling in love but they are afraid of the potential hurt, they have no confidence and want to be alone but because they are falling for this other person they want to just be with them and no one else. She calls them a hostage because its that toxic side of a relationship that doesnt want to share their world with anyone else and wants to keep them to themselves. Taking them Hostage by building these walls around them, tying them down (ball and chain) and cutting them off from everything/one else

I just wanna say- in xanny I love the bass, but I really love how when she says “don’t give me a xanny” the pitch goes back and fourth between the right ear and left ear at every word

I always thought of hostage as an abusive/ toxic relationship and Billie was the abuser. It’s also my favorite song out of the four you reacted to

can you maybe react to the rest of her songs from “dont smile at me” (her EP) and the rest from “when we all fall asleep, where do we go” (her debut album). and maybe some of her other songs like “six feet under” and “come out and play”. I would love if you would eventually listen to all of them at one point, lol. btw, i’m so happy you reacted to hostage and xanny!! hostage deserves wayyyyy more recognition and I love the song xanny! and hostage is not about mental illness, it is about being so attached to someone that you want to “hold them hostage”. you don’t want them to leave, and you just want to be with them. each of the different colors in the video represent different emotions and things. for example, orange means “bad intentions”, white is “calm”, dark blue is when she “holds him hostage”, and red is “lust”. that is just my comprehension of the video, so don’t take my word.

Hostage is about toxic relationship, her being possessive and controlative that's why she saiys hostage, and in the dance he is being controlled like a puppet, also in nanny is about her friend that died bc of drugs, and that's why she sigh at the end, but the cool thing about billie´s songs is that they have so many meanings

But she got engird and that completely took her out of dance....😔❤️ and that really sucks because Billie’s way of getting rid of stress and just get everything out at ones and don’t have to think about it is that she just has to move or dance or just get up and walk and do something.she explains more of that in the video called “Billie eilish- Documentary| Up next ” or something, in that video she explains her life and even starts crying when talking about the engery.... please watch the video!😔🙏🏻❤️😭

hostage was actually about an abusive relationship, and as someone who has been in one, it doesn't just show the abuser doing faults, it shows that relationships are never black and white, that just feels so important to me because people seem to think there's no grey area. another thing i loved is that billie shows it's not just men that can be abusive. women can too.

from what i remember, hostage is basically about a (to sum it up) toxic relationship. she talks about how she gets hurt, but also she hurts them too (which is kinda more explained in the video then in the actual song)

She doesn't dance much because when she was younger she was a dancer but then she broke one of her bones so she cant properly dance anymore that's why she dances the way she does.

Billie used to be a really good dancer, I watched her dance in a couple videos, but she was injured so she doesn’t dance much anymore. Now she just jumps, and now has started to sprain her ankles a lot. Also, hostage is about a relationship thing I think.

My personal favorite from billie is "wish you were gay" because its very much like the style of ocean eyes but the way the lyrics is written is amazing and just *chef's kiss*

Xanny, she did an interview and she explained that she was at a club with friends and one of her friends went up to her, with two smokes in her mouth. Then her friend blew the smoke right into her face. That makes the one line "I'm in their second hand smoke". And she said that she wanted the chorus to be really uncomfortable like the feeling of that. Then the other parts like healthy lungs, smooth and silky.

Bury a friend is about billie having sleep paralysis when she says "when we all fall asleep, where do we go?" Means what happens in our dreams and during the bridge she says "my limbs are frozen, my eyes wont close and I cant say no, I cant say no." That is what happens during sleep paralysis and you cant do anything, you just watch.

I appreciate your remark on depression/mental illness. The executive function is a struggle. It is a battle for to even take a shower, let alone get anything important done. It wasn't always this way. But it is now. My You Tube channel is going to remain at the very bottom rung for this reason. I try , but I feel like I just can't even begin.

i think Hostage is about a person that really doesn't know how to love and how to act towards the person they "love". it reminds me of my father that was very cold and sometimes violent. my mother loved him very much and i remember him telling her that he doesn't know why he hurts her and that he loves her too. this is what Billie does in the video. she pushes him away, she hurts him and when he's too scared to love her again she shuts him off completely. anyway, the song and the video are both amazing.

You should really listen to “I love you” by Billie. It’s not one of her popular songs but it really hits you differently

Billie normally sticks to a style that is more indie pop/indie rock or just regular pop. She mixes the styles together a lot in her music which makes it harder to tell what her style is.

I personally feel based on the imagry that Hostage is about an abusive relationship. He is constantly pulling her back to look at him and saying he loves her and all. But by the way Billie is pulling away from his grip makes it seem like she doesn't want it. Another interesting part that you pointed out that when she willingly walked away from him the colors got darker till she rushed back. Victims of abusive relationships often are either afraid to leave them or feel guilty for leaving them because they are used to the abuse and want to make exscuses for the other person in the relationship

I’m so glad you listened to Bored not many people do and it’s one of my favourite songs of hers. Also I don’t know if you know Billie actually has a background in dance, it was her life before she got injured.

She’s said in a few interviews that if she was going to perform just one song for the entire world it would be “Bury a Friend” as of early 2020. That could change considering GOLD is constantly coming out from her. Not that it’s her favorite lyrics or song necessarily, but her favorite to perform. It’s a must.
