Never Plant Hydrangea Macrophylla If You Live In USDA Zone 5 Or Colder!

Why Hydrangea Macrophylla isn’t blooming? For many years I tried to bring this beautiful plant to full blooming stage with just NO or little effect. If you like me, live in continental climate within USDA zones 5 or colder, did you ever wonder why there are so many cultivar sold in local garden centres, big box stores in spring and during the whole gardening season, but I barely see them growing and thriving outside people’s houses? The growers label stating, that bigleaf hydrangea should be hardy for climate zone 4 and + So why I do not see any of that flowering hardy perennial in ares where it is sold in such a great number. Maybe I am not the only one, who can not take care of this plant, so it is not blooming,? Seems like everybody have the same problems!?

Why didn't you keep it as a potted plant? Did you try that? What a waste of a lovely plant! You should have given it away. ☹️

I have no problems with them blooming zone 5. I also noticed when you pulled that plant out of the ground the roots were still in the same shape they were in the pot. Roots need to be teased out ( despite what some think) They will continue to circle and never reach deep or spread out in the ground as the one you pulled out clearly shows.

I’m in Michigan zone 6 I have had a few small blooms a lot of foliage and frankly it’s exhausting. This has been going on for 5 years I also have tried everything. My sister is tired of hearing about it I am on a well water so maybe it hates the water. All my other flowers flourish no problem. I also ripped a couple out and moved them to a different part of the yard to see if that helps. My mom lives 40 miles south of me and doesn’t really do much and has three that bloom really well. I decided to stop torturing myself and focus on the plants that love to live with me and if the big leafs decide to get happy one day well, yippee 🤦🏻‍♀️

Grow in planters and store in unseated garage or shed. You will have a ton of blooms. Also allows you to move them around to avoid hot aftrtnoon sun.

In zone 6 cover from March to June 1 to stop frost from killing the buds. Use an old sheet.

I'm in zone 5 upper Wisconsin. I have two Endless summer hydrangeas that I planted three years ago. I've never covered them, although I intend to this year. One is facing north and the other east. Both are doing well. The North facing one is covered in blooms and has doubled in size. The East facing one, I moved this year and although it has many flowers on it it's not as big as the other one. The one you pulled out was lovely, I would love the pale pink flowers, so pretty. You need to plant better. Water the plant and then break up the soil in the pot before putting it in the ground, add compost and fertilize. It's just like anything, it needs care and love. I think they are worth it. Mine are a beautiful deep pink because my soil is clay and alkaline. I wish I lived closer to you, I would have been on the curb to pick them up and give them a good home :) It was sad to see you put them in the trash.

Thanks for saving the rest of us from this useless quest for these blooms!

Or maybe you just don’t know how to care for hydrangeas? here in New England they are very prevalent and thrive across the states zone 5 here in NH
@nawadabob
In the fall place large cardboard on top and pile it with leaves until plant is flattened to the ground...in the spring remove and plant pops up leafs out and will be covered with blooms...I live in Northern Wisconsin but learned this from an Ontario gardener...I tried chicken wire surround with leaves and it was not enough cover...make sure you leave it covered until temps are above 27 degrees F

I feel your pain. The hydrangea came with the house where I live near Toronto. I thought I was me. It has great leaves. I'm definitively going to dig it out this year after hearing your story. 12 years are enough chances for a plant. Thank you.

Zone 5 here and never had any luck. I even tried serrata which said it was very cold hearty. Now I just keep some in planters and over winter them inside for next year lmao.

You are right, i did spend a lot of money trying all colors, only the white paniculatas survived illinois, i bought lime light now, hope is ok for next year
@robertparker7582
Really informative story, thank you. I’m a 100 miles south of Canada and 55 miles north of Spokane. Zone 6 that occasionally gets significantly colder every fourth winter or so. Buying my first hydrangeas…

This is such a great video and timely information. I'mma give these babies one more (3rd) year and more sun, but that's it. Thanks.
@paulettelambert7965
You’re absolutely correct! I lived in Ontario for 35 years and I have never seen endless summer hydrangeas around in full bloom! I moved back to NL. Planted bloomstruck 3 years ago and had blooms once. I’m taking them out and planting panicle hydrangeas instead. The bloomstruck ones are a BIG disappointment!

Tks for yr explanations. I just wondered why I have failed beautiful hydrangeas to get them to bloom after cold winter. It doesn’t matter pruning or not pruning. I live in zone 5 n my hydrangeas are located in north where they get morning sun n harsh afternoon heat. I may give up n plant something else.
