This is a mistake that I see a lot of influencers and creators make. They will make a post about a brand, product, or service that they love. They will leave a glowing review and then immediately follow up this review with "don't worry, this isn't sponsored."
RED FLAG.
You should never be saying when a post isn't sponsored. And if you are saying it, you are setting yourself up mistrust.
When you say "this isn't sponsored", this is what you are actually saying:
"I know this sounds like an ad because I'm talking so highly about this brand. But don't worry, I wasn't paid to say this. So that means you can really trust this review because my words aren't prompted by money."
The reason this is setting yourself up for failure is that it gives the impression that when you say nice things about a brand, it's because you were paid to do so. Almost like by NOT being paid to say these nice things now, it makes your unsolicited recommendation better or more trustworthy.
Saying nice things about a brand or giving your honest opinion about a product or service is not something that you should only say when money is involved. Talking about brands should not be limited to sponsored content. So by saying "don't worry, this isn't sponsored", it outs yourself as someone who believes that your honest opinion only goes as far as the money.
