Just when we thought we were done working on the exterior of our bus conversion, and that it was time to move on to the interior... My dad came up with a crazy DIY skylight idea for our skoolie that we have never seen anyone else do.
Here's a hint, these particular skylights are designed for tall people. Let us know in the comments below what you think of them, or if you have any ideas. We always love hearing from you! Your ideas will either help us improve our skylights, or help someone else who wants to do something like these.
Also... You're going to want to tune in for Part 2 & 3. There was no way we could do this whole project in one go.
✌See what we did with the 6 holes we just cut in our roof.

We've certainly have lots in store for you if you want to:
- take what’s old & make it new

Reg O yep! I’m 6’2” & we’re not doing a roof raise. Erin is 5’1-3/4” (every quarter inch counts at her height😜) so these scenic shoulder skylights will give ample view from the kitchen as I walk through or cook. Are you building a Skoolie too? How tall are you? Thanks for watching! - Brian (+ Erin too)

I've been a window installer for 30 years I used to save the curved glass portion of Wendys atrium for just that purpose. I never got around to that project so when I downsized I threw them away. Cudos to you guys for actually doing it. Wish my flexible had those windows. They made one - I forget the name of it.

You guys are fun to watch. Firefighters might not know how to do stuff, but at least they're really careful doing whatever they're doing, and know how to keep themselves from getting hurt. That seems like a pretty worthwhile skill set to have while building a schoolie. Skylights are a really cool idea. Search out dycor self leveling sealant. It's your friend in all things roof related.

Hey @2AZSUN! I am grateful for Brian's background with Firefighting, safety, and tools it is definitely a BIGGGGGG benefit that we have. It's also nice that he has a background in carpentry, and has built decks, pergolas, bed's, and some other projects from wood. I am was raised in a handy house so have always used tools. I am just a bit rusty. BUT picking tools up, and learning how to use them again feels sooo good! Thanks so much for being here & for the inside scoop on the dycor self leveling sealant. Oh my you guys! I’m so nervous watching you cut into your roof!! We’re in the middle of our build and still can’t make up our mind on cutting holes in the roof for skylights after the wet and rainy year we have had! You’re so lucky to be building inside!
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
Hey @Rehabit8! Love your name! Congrats on being half way through your build. Cutting holes in the roof was a little scary, but once we had the idea in our heads, and thought of the benefits for Brian with his height, it just made sense. It's been super cold & snowy here in Ontario so we are grateful to be inside as well. When we did our first skylights & roof painting job we were outside. You can use an oven to heat up the plastic and bend/form it to the desired bend you need. Just don't cook it. When you get it to correct heat, it'll bend easily. Place it in place onto the opening to achieve the proper bend. It'll cool in place at the correct bend and stay set. I look forward to seeing more from you. Rudie.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
Great idea @Rudie Arendt! While we won't have access to an oven out at the barn, we will have access to a heat gun. Originally we were just going to bend it because it is only 1/8th thick, but you've got us thinking we should heat it up so it forms, instead of always fighting against the screws. High five! - Brian + Erin
@rudiearendt808
@rudiearendt808 4 года назад
BE Adventure Partners Maybe you have access to a space heater that would heat it up on a large surface area scale. The heat gun would work to pin point heat it. You'll have to work quick, from heat to window placement. Wear gloves.
@BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
@@rudiearendt808 - We are up against the Canadian Winter right now. It's -13C today. The barn is just as cold. On less cold days we can get the temperature up to +10C with our big 135,000 BTU Heater. LOL So this should be interesting. We were thinking if I (Erin) hold the heat gun and sway it back and forth while Brian drills the screws in it will help. This stuff blends super easily. So fingers crossed. We will have to wait for a warmer day just to be safe. Fingers crossed that comes soon. We officially caught up to our footage. Hhaha
@rudiearendt808
@rudiearendt808 4 года назад
BE Adventure Partners I can understand what you're up against. Maybe, you can use a couple of heat lamps along with the heat gun. When I used to do bodywork, we had infrared heat lamps that were of a quartz design, not to make light but to create heat only. The design of it is still in use today but even on larger scale e.g. outdoor space heating, large warehouses, shop's etc. At the very least maybe a hot tent around the area your trying to work the sky lights to help stave off the cold air. It's just suggested thinking about your project. I know you're the ones doing it in the cold barn. I'm just offering an out of the barn look in. No pun intended, well maybe a little...

A roof spot they aren't putting a window would give them a smooth surface with the exact curve they want. Should be able to use the roof as a form then move it over the hole after it is shaped.

It may mean less wild off roading, but we will be in it all the time, and wanted the luxury of having all the things that we need. Like great kitchen amenities, tools, craft stuff, and our camera gear. Other than that we don't have much, so the space will be nice & open without the need for much storage. :) Our biggest recommendation is start writing a list of all the things you want, and things you already have that you definitely want to bring. Hey there @Amanda Wilder! We bought the polycarbonate on Amazon here: amzn.to/3stEBnn You can see the skylights in action in this video at this time stamp: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-orJX_wAM55U.html Because of where they are in the ceiling curve, it's not really in my (B's) head space. But they do allow a ton of light! Now that we've been using them for awhile and cooking under them, they do collect condensation when it's cold outside. With the Maxair ejector fan on, that helps to pull the steam out. That's all a part of life and single-pane issues. But we think it is a fine tradeoff. Thanks for watching! - Brian + Erin

@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
LOL! That would be AWESOME if we had a K12 with a diamond blade (like I used on the Quint when I was a firefighter). Since the hole openings are only 21", we would have just plunge cut and moved the blade a couple inches and be done. @allmomomosthomebus3895 4 года назад
@@BEAdventurePartners I'll share our plan for the roof, in case you want to use it... lofted bed in back... 2 ft x 6 ft skylight hatch over head to see stars at night. Then outside on the roof were welding a strong tubular metal space frame to hold high quality white catamaran netting probably something like 7x6. The idea is to be able to climb out onto roof and sit or comfortably lay down and stargaze. The sailboat netting would be a lot less weight than any deck, easier to install, easy to replace, and comfy to sit or lay on.

We also have a big window there. BUT we figured when Brian was doing dishes he may want to look out. If the skylights weren't there he would be looking at the ceiling. He actually has a better view than me. I have curtains & a shelf to compete with to see out the lower window. @BEAdventurePartners
@BEAdventurePartners 4 года назад
Yeah, those vw windows are cool! As you saw, we took it a step further and made'em curved! As with any protrusion, there is always the possibility of leakage, regardless of how many (which is why we seal'em up good!) We're not going to NOT do something just because there is the possibility of a leak (we don't live in fear and don't want to regret NOT making our space the way we want it!) LOL :)
