Pied-à-terre is a small living unit, e.g., apartment or condominium, usually located in a large city some distance away from an individual's primary residence.
@KG-ul7nx
@KG-ul7nx 4 года назад
This is good to know. I initially thought pied-à-terre = studio apartment, meaning the apartment would be someone's primary home. But if this is more a place to sleep when the owner's are away from their home for work/culture etc, some design choices (like the tiny kitchen, and space-stealing bed) make a bit more sense. I personally found this design lacked some of the cleverness of your other videos. There were a lot of luxury materials/finishes, but not many innovative ideas for storage/small space living. One thing I liked was the tucked-away bathroom storage, but I wonder how much additional storage would have been available if it was open storage (instead of the small recessed cupboards)?

As an architect, I can appreciate the criticisms of this being too much like a hotel room. However, with such a small amount of space to work with, in addition to the client's very specific brief I think Renee did the best she could with such a difficult space. There's a reason hotel rooms have this layout and it's for efficiency - when you have 15.8sqm(!) there's little else that can be moved around without compromising other aspects of the room. As much as a folding bed may have opened up the space (among other possibilities) if your client specifically wants to have a large bed as a permanent fixture you can argue your point but ultimately it's their place, so their decision. You just have to accept it, work with it and own your final design.

This is a great space if you're single, a light packer, and don't like entertaining. A lot of people are complaining that it's like a hotel room or a bedroom, but I think that's exactly what their client was after: a bedroom away from home when they're in the city. Nothing wrong with that if you're not planning on keeping a lot of belongings there or having anyone over.

Seeing spaces that people would deem too tiny to live in used as proper homes by smart solutions is what the true beauty is. And knowing Amsterdam, there are probably loads of these tiny apartments where people actually live that you can find.

I live in a 21sqm apartment with an almost identical layout (just remove the lounge sofa and add a table + 6sqm). I admit this looks cramped and is definitely designed as a hotel room... But I am kind of amazed that people go on about how "you can't live in a space like that". Looking at my own apartment I have everything I need from a large home. Shower, toilet, kitchen, dining-room bedroom, living room, office, wardrobe, even luxuries like a VR-playroom, Gym etc. How? well my office desk that double acts as a pull out dining table (6-8 people). My bed serve as my lounge area (I have no sofa, don't need one, the bed is very comfortable), in front of the bed I have a TV with wall mounted cupboards above and below and a wardrobe on the side (tons of storage) . I can tuck away my bed and the table. Allowing for a 12sqm usable space for anything I see fit. I can do yoga, gymnastics and play VR games in a 12sqm open space. The apartment can really be adapted to any occasion. My total living cost is 140EUR/month. Living in Sweden I am basically financially independent at the age of 35. Something I would never be in a large home with dedicated rooms and a tons of space.

And during a few luxurious times I have stoved away the bed vertically when I had a whole VR-day with my brother. My long term plan is to make a murphy bed. to be able to quickly allow for the whole room area to be free from furniture. :) (great for gym, yoga, VR as well as setting up the desk in the middle of the room for a dining room experience) I can move my desk and chair out in the kitchen area easily since everything is pretty much an open space. and I also have foldable chairs to pull out for guests. :)

@@DaveTexas Well, I have decided to live by myself, most likely for the rest of my life. I do have a partner since 8 years back and we are very happy together enjoying our life without the worry that children often provides. Life doesn't necessarily have to follow the norms, ideals or conventions of society. Children doesn't have to be the main goal or driver in life. I mean I love children, I'm a great uncle, but I don't necessarily want to father children of my own. And having a lucrative career doesn't have to be the goal if you don't actually require the money to stay happy. I mean, you sound very fortunate to have been able to buy off a big condo. That's far from a reality to most people. Most people spend their whole life in debt living a similar lifestyle. But you are right! I don't have a lot of equity in my home. And that is actually by choice. 11 years ago I lived a life of excess with my ex-wife. We bought an old fancy 130sqm aristocratic apartment. We filled it with luxury items and stuff. we were on a path of success with well-paid jobs, which also meant a very wasteful western lifestyle with the constant consumption and upgrading of goods (which is terrible for the environment). It came to a point where I realized that it didn't make me happy and in-fact it wasn't what I wanted out of life. I felt stuck and my lifestyle prohibited me from doing the things I ACTUALLY cared about; Spending time with the people I love, living a life without stress, being present as a human. When I am alone I can be creative and I have the freedom to travel, explore nature etc... Both me and my partner agree that we live a very full life without the burden or adaption required by conventional living. Today my apartment has: - A Desktop computer - A Laptop - A TV - A Stereo - Retro computers/video games - A Bed - A Table - Clothes - Food It has no real value if anything happen to my home. Which I consider being a good thing as materialistic stuff isn't weighing me down. So really, it doesn't matter if my apartment gets flooded, it doesn't matter if a hurricane destroys it all. I can pack everything I care about in a bag and still be happy. My lifestyle made me financially independent and worry free at the age of 35. The main reason being that I opted out of consumerism :) I'm probably just an oddball, and my choices aren't for everyone, but at least I can explain why I live like I do. And the benefits it has for me on a personal level.

@@DaveTexas a large home in a city like Barcelona is totally inaccessible for a single person or a coulpe on an average income. But a small flat, if well decorated and in a decent neighbourhood, is definitely a valuable asset - the sort of property that you can rent easily if you decide to move out - and very sought after if you were to sell it.

I'm sure the client had their reasons, though it does feel rather cramped. But regardless of how the space was distributed, the onyx niche for some reason looks so unreal. So it probably was supposed to look this impersonal, like an actual hotel room. I love the execution of this apartment while at the same time thinking it’s also proof that 16sqm just isn’t enough space for an apartment. I love the hotel style, I love the amazing integration, and most of all I love the cozy nook by the window! The Frame TV fits there perfectly, and I can understand why they chose such a big artwork next to it: in such a small room, one big luxurious artwork can make the room feel bigger than multiple small ones. I’m also glad they chose a real bed and not an impractical Murphy bed. But I think I’d get a bit claustrophobic in the small bathroom without windows, and I wish there was a cover over the power outlet behind the induction stove. The owner probably won’t cook much anyway but if they did, this power outlet could get greasy, fast. Still, this is one of the best designs for micro apartments I have seen so far! I wouldn’t want to live there but it’s very inspirational for what you can do in a small space.

If you rent it out when you're not there it'll pay for itself in less than 5 years. Lastly, having your own space is invaluable. You'll never feel that way at AirBnB or in hotel room.

@@mondianijoli9080 regarding last argument, it entirely depends on when you're in such space. If you spend a month in and two months out in repeat you can easily make it yours for that month, pack up, clean up and rent.

That onyx kitchenette is TO DIE FOR. Spaces like this apartment share the same principals as Tiny House design - when you are designing and finishing such small spaces, you can reserve a larger percentage of the budget for luxurious indulgences that elevate the tactile and aesthetic experience of the space. Cladding a standard sized kitchen in onyx would be ostentatious and insanely expensive, but a 8 ft. square niche - it's like sculpture or a jewelry piece in the room. Exquisite!

I can see why people dislike the appartment: Almost no colors, no real 'warmth', the picture is way too big and well, it's a luxurious place.
