In Ilioupoli, a quiet, residential district south of Athens in Greece, Point Supreme Architects were tasked with converting a cold basement storage space into a functional studio apartment. Situated on the bottom floor of a multigenerational building, Ilioupoli apartment is intended as a future home for the family’s younger children, keeping the family together for longer while allowing them their own spaces. Previously an entirely open concrete room, the architects divided the space by extending the existing enclosed toilet into a full bathroom, adding an entryway partition screen and planter, as well as curtained sliding glass doors to enclose the bedroom. The home is further divided by colour, with the kitchen featuring a deep maroon laminate, a full size fridge as well as a custom island bench that opens on all four sides for storage. A contrasting bold blue bathroom is visible from the kitchen through a window in the wall between the two rooms that also allows for the flow of light. Division through flexible partitions, colour and materials creates a space that feels larger and more varied than it is, ensuring even basement storage can become a comfortable home.

I love this channel but I find it odd that people in small spaces don't ever seem to want a comfortable chair or couch.
@yael9137

I was thinking the same. Probably the third or fourth video where I thought something like “swap that built in bench for a proper two to three seater sofa and I’m sold!”. In this case those two carver chairs. Or add an additional low line sofa under the book shelf.

I know right… the majority don’t. There’s comfy seating that doesn’t take up space. I’ve just come. To the conclusion that people go to and from the dining room seats to the bed.😅

I was thinking in myslef and I work and watch movies/series in my computer. I own a sofa but never use it and if I want watch something more comfortably I go to the bed with the ipad. I think that this can be related with the devices? But regarding to the video, maybe the chairs are a provisional solution since the space allows a 2 site-couch.

I understand the principle that drives designers to use a lot of neutral colors/whites in maintaining a minimalist home. It really does make sense especially for small spaces. But! I am absolutely amazed when designers are able to incorporate color in this way because it gives so much life to a home and defines zones effectively without resorting to the default color scheme for minimalist homes. I wonder if this really is 55sqm, it feels much bigger.

Mediterranean cultures usually gather around a table, not so much in a "living room" - even the term is a foreign one in Spanish, for example. People don't mind watching TV while eating/drinking at a table (maybe the owners didn't ask for a sofa!). Our "needs" depend on the culture we're immersed in.

This is easily a standout from many spaces featured in this channel so far. The use of multi color and multi texture is charming and refreshing from a typical minimalist approach in this kind of small space. There are many parts that are left untouched especially like the exposed concrete texture on core pillars that add significant character to the space. Also the bathroom in that light sky blue is gorgeous. I love it. Kudos to the designers ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Nice aesthetic, but i think they really missed a trick with the layout here. So much space is reserved for the closet room, that could have been used for a snug living space with a corner couch. I have seen dozens of Never Too Small episodes, and this is the first one I really, really like! They used COLOR, not just white or plywood brown! This space might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s undeniably beautiful! The different partitions they’ve arranged throughout the space allows for privacy without feeling congested or closed off; most have some form of transparency, so the space still feels open and fluid. I’ll definitely be citing this for inspiration when I move in a few months.

Have to say, this one is not my cup of tea at all. I really felt the potential from the initial pictures of the place and started to imagine an interior myself. I wonder, why people would not contrast the exposed concrete with a bright, natural wooden floor instead of using tiles. I love the exposed concrete but it conveys a rather heavy and cold mood already, which is perfect to add some playful but still elegant, warm and rustic elements to it. I think the tiles are just too much for this place. Also, combining the living room with the dining space adds some kind of uneasiness and a busy mood to a place for relaxing. Would have put the bed where the closets are and the living room where the bed is with sofas oriented towards the wall, etc. Still cool place.
@AnaMatei
@AnaMatei 2 года назад
The use of tiles on the floor instead of wood is not to my liking either, but this is the traditonal approach to floors in Greece, also in Spain, Croatia, Turkey and Morocco. There are some functional aspects to it. The proximity of the beach means a lot of sand will inevitably end up in the house, so tiles are easier to keep clean. The other reason for the tiled floors has to do with temperature and humidity control because it really gets very hot and humid in Athens in July, so much so that wooden floors would quickly become mouldy considering the lack of air circulation beneath a floor. Then, the tiles are naturally colder and help regulate body temperature when walking barefoot during the summer.
@macheifach
@macheifach 2 года назад
@@AnaMatei Makes sense, thanks for the clarification. In that case, I would have probably used natural stone flooring in anthracite color to enhance the cave mood and contrast it heavily with wooden furniture and other elements.

I felt exactly the same. Also the small tiles together with the japanese divider and other square stuff makes the room look too busy. There´s just too many rectangular grids with a technical note overlaying each other. I´also opted for a wooden floor but I totally see Ana´s point! Just a uniform floor or bigger tiles could do the job. A bit more matte rather than glossy - and a grout with not too much contrast to tiles would also help…

The reason why this seems like a big area is bcoz of lack of dividing walls and rather having an open space plan. That in itself already saves a lot of space in the apartment. About the chairs, honestly i wonder that too. I would've rather preferred them to just place a comfortable 3 seater couch in the living area instead of those two chairs and they could watch a movie from there comfortably instead.

@Only Me I agree 55sqm is not at all tiny. In Spain or France 55sqm is a pretty decent size appartment for a couple if you live in a big city or a smaller city with high housing demand. I used to live in France with my ex and we first had a 45sqm appartment in the city center of Grenoble and it was fine for the two of us. Now I live alone with my cat in Madrid in a 35sqm studio and the only thing I wish I had it's a couple of extra walls to physically separate the bedroom form the rest.

I gotta be honest, I don't like this design at all. Overall the space have way too many materials that it's just overwhelming to the eyes and takes away from the cozy cave like feeling they were going for. Metal is not earthy from a design perspective but is used in industrial interior design, which is almost the opposite of naturalistic. But even if they went for a naturalistic interior design they used too many different type of woods, between the entrance bench and partition screen, the furniture, the cork wall (which is not a sound proof material btw), and the mirror wall. I realise they had a traditional vision in mind, but when you have too much density in materials and textures, you lose the atmosphere of the space. I also don't understand the idea of placing a cooking island when there's still plenty of space left along the back of the partition screen and next to the small pillar (2:07) to extend the kitchen countertop all the way around, which could have created more floorspace in the kitchen and the possibility of making a two person sitting area next to the pillar. The bathroom color looks great though, it brings the mind to Paros Island in Greece, but it actually lacks density and comes off as looking too empty, which is kinda odd in relation to the rest of the apartment. I don't mean to put down all the work that went into this, I'm just saying I personally don't agree with many of the choices they made. At the end of the day all that matters is whether the people who lives there like their home.

They said "comfortable" twice in ref to living room: comfortable coffee table and comfortably watch a movie from the living room. Not in those chairs. I'd put some genuinely comfortable seating there and make a breakfast bar with extendable table you can pull out from that island when needed. I do like that there's a lot of floor space near the closet so you can exercise there or have a small dance floor when you entertain. I'd put that by the window and the bed by the back wall away from window. This design is very uncomfortable for me.

Seems like water would come straight down that staircase and into the unit? Don't see a drain. Lovely build though!

It does not look like 55 sqm. It looks bigger!

This looks like a unique and cozy place to live! I especially liked that Japan-inspired plant wall partition. A basement can be challenging to brighten up, but they really managed it here. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us!

I love this design so much, especially on how they separated the spaces! I imagine my dream small house to still have boundaries for each room. This design is a good example.

There’s good bones in this apartment & the design is pretty nice. But, no offense, besides the kitchen cabinet color, the whole house seems to have color mismatch. Perhaps too much is an over. A real pity though

Πολύ όμορφο, φοβερή δουλειά! Αλλά το χειμώνα πως είναι με το κρύο, έχει μόνωση το διαμέρισμα;

This may be my favorite space featured, so far. I love the glass bookcase wall, the Japanese inspiration, the tile floors, the bedroom area, the kitchen... Everything in this special space is beautiful. I would love to live there.

I hate this one. The proportions are way off. Dining and kitchen are too big. And why a HUGE screen when there is nothing but a couple of crap/hard chairs to sit on? When I see drapes as walls, I think of university apartments. A total ruin of space.

Kitchen is very good but there is not much sitting place neither comfortable place to sit, probably they don't like guests but still they need bigger and functional living room. It could be bigger by taking out the bed out of the way. They could make some Murphy bed to open at night.

I know nothing about design, but i don't really like the place.I find the bedroom and the closet too big ,on the contrary the living room way too small...

Title is a bit misleading - I thought it would be lots of people from 3 generations living in 55 sq meter. Not a family converting their basement for their kids.

I like all the different spaces that open up and close into each other. I also like the use of dividing walls and shelves where you can peek into different areas. So much potential to change up and customise to your own liking. I could definitely call this home : )

55m2 is not considered small in Europe, it's average sized apartment.

This is a great place with interesting "rooms", but some colours are too much (like blue colour in the bathroom) and the wall behind the bed in the bedroom.

Nice apartment, but come on, put an actual comfortable sofa under the bookcase! Those chairs look uncomfortable af.

This is a lot of space and it doesn't seem to be optimally used. No study area, no privacy in the bedroom, only one bedroom...

I feel that if you move the bed into that closet area and then you can have a lounge area where the bed was, else that closet space is really underutilized.
