UKO is Australia's first co-living space in Stanmore, in the inner-west of Sydney, Australia. Architect Ashkan Mostaghim from Mostaghim and Associates presents the smallest of UKO's footprints, a 19sqm Micro Apartment. Including a small bathroom and kitchen, a flexible layout is made possible by cleverly designed joinery that maximises floor space by ensuring essentials, including a dining table and sofa is able to be packed away under a queen bed when not required.

to all the people commenting that you wouln't put away the sofa: Then don't! I think its awesome that on a day to day basis the sofa can stay out, but if i want to do e.g. a home-workout I stilll have the option for floor space! Or have more room for the dining table when I've invited friends over. Of course you can leafe out the sofa, if that is what you like. The module is there to adapt to different needs, not to tuck everything away neatly at the end of the day.

So this is basically dorms. I’ve noticed this type of co-living in Seattle too and it makes me worried for the future of housing. It feels like a person’s home is becoming less and less theirs and more designed to fit the most amount of people as profitably as possible. These micro studio apartments also presume that you will only use your home for sleeping, and never for living, entertaining, cooking. My concern isn’t about this building in particular, in fact I think it’s beautifully designed, just an example of a trend I’ve been noticing.

I'd never want to heat and pay extra rent/taxes for a dining room that I would use once a month and a guest bedroom that would be used two times a year. That's just wasteful. This place provides communal spaces, so you can entertain others, and you have opportunities to connect with people - which you don't have if you pay for a regular self-contained apartment, where you can have all the privacy you want, and end up with all the isolation, you didn't need.

the thing is... I think this solution allows you to do whatever you want... If you want the sofa to be permanent. that's not a problem, but if you want to be able to stove it away and have game night around a larger table. That's not a problem. Perhaps you will commonly eat your dinner at the small table. And that's the thing. it's about flexibility. I made my kitchenette on wheels (with safety lock). not because I move it from day to day. but If I want to do indoor exercise or play VR games I can move it away from my main area resulting in tons of space. my next step is to create a murphy bed. not because I will tuck it away everyday... but at least the possibility exists. and perhaps I will do it once or twice a week.

"We didn't design this with a specific person in mind." I read this as "We can tweak things to accommodate, to suit a particular person/group as best as possible." It is possible that someone may find this very suitable, if not close to perfect, for his/her lifestyle, or potential lifestyle. The balcony is a bonus to this tiny apartment, but appears to be able to serve well, very user friendly. And this one is in Australia. There are some balconies that are not desirable to use, or necessary, but balconies are usually desirable, or a selling point, to most people.

That’s the appeal for folks that work in one location for several months and then must move. This is sort of what I did in my small apartment with no closets. Found old wooden dining tables to make a platform for my bed; one has a drop-down leaf, it became the door to my storage crawlspace. My long dresser is underneath the bed, facing outwards so I can easily access my most needed stuff. Then I have an armoire, a settee with storage underneath, and a sturdy wooden storage trunk with shoes underneath, that acts as the step up to my bed. I have a metal rack that allows drying dishes above the sink; maximizes kitchen counter space.

You clearly don’t know what it’s like to design in Australia, we’re mostly caught up in building laws that take an absolute nightmare of time to make small changes i.e moving a door. Also the building was mostly built already which means it’s been approved, the client most likely would not have liked to go through another approval process to “move a door.” This is an exercise in doing the best with what you have.

I think most people on this channel do not understand what co-living is for. This kind of housing is mostly for young working professionals in big, crowded cities. In US, I have seen co-living spaces like these in cities like NYC, SFO, etc where loads of young ppl work for intense jobs like investment banking, consultancies, software engineering, research, etc. They get paid well, but barely stay in their apartments, and apart from their office colleagues might not have any other friends. This can lead some of them to feel socially isolated. The rent there is already high for worse planned studios and roommate/shared housing. I feel this apartment is a great combination of having a personal space while being part of a community and for living a more social life while having an intense job. These are not meant for permanent living usually, though there are loads of ppl who would definitely prefer this kind of nomadic living over a large suburban house filled with kids.

Unless you live on the top floor it would be a disaster with your upstairs neighbors dragging furniture around all day and night. Someone clearly never had upstairs neighbors in traditional apartments.

I will love this space if I was a student. However, the green colour could be changed to black/grey/pine for a more sophisticated look for single professionals.

Se siente como una habitación de hotel o Airbnb. La verdad el closet está súper pequeño y no creo que sea suficiente. Que flojera estar sacando y metiendo el sillón y la mesa. Creo que para un hotel está perfecto. Para un departamento no.

I looked into the co housing ethos many years ago and think it has great merit. Australian people have been spoiled with lots of space and dont understand sharing very well, as can be seen by some comments. Really hope this project is successful.

This is quite clever to use this niche by the bathroom for this bed/storage section. I must say it'd work in my studio, I might consider it in the future. Well I'd have even stronger headache while disigning my studio consideirng also this possibility. But in practice I think the sofa would be out of the storage all the time, and the free space could be a new wardrobe/storage. It'd be nice to have tv mounted on the white bed barier, so one could rotate if one's in bed or on sofa. Also that movable table isn't very space-economic. Also being in kithen opposite to the window is terrible, imho, even if there's a mirror(which is super nice, and quite cheap, but all the cleaning...). Otherwise this is very nice studio. I have some ikea furniture on wheels(by DIY): heigh-regulated big table/desk, kitchen trolley/island and 1-person sofa-bed module. They are great because I can rearrange the room however I want, but they are almost in the same place for a long time(apart from parties), because it's not that easy to carefully move a big furniture piece and change its use quickly.

I saw many comments complaining saying that they wish for a bigger house or multiple rooms when the video is obviously about living in small house or compact house. I wonder why? Isn't obvious the house going to be small just from the title desc. alone?? Anyway, I love this apartment. Well maybe I'm single and did not plan to marry anytime soon. However, housing in my country focus on family feature and a studio priced almost the same as a normal 3b2b apartment.. Damn I'm single and don't planing to have 3 bedroom n 2 bathroom + kitchen + living roon when that I know I wont use that many space or have the energy to clean those up, but it is almost imposible to find affordable single room for one person.. I'm so 😔.....

Smart solutions for the short term. The kitchen (for me) is too small (and I love baking). The two seats that could be put back and forth could be more like two storage boxes. There's not enough room for stuff, clothes.

I don't do stairs or ladders because I have bad knees and am prone to falls, but with a chair-lift or extendable ramp for my walker instead of steps, it would be great. I'd also find a way to add a washer-dryer combo because I can't carry lots of laundry around. Edit: On second viewing, I'm wondering if you have enough space to comfortably sit up in the bed loft. That's a game-changer for me because otherwise I'd get claustrophobic and probably bump my head every night. Also, the sofa could have a sleeper function for guests. Edit 2: I'd also need a computer desk for working from home.

It looks and feelmore like student accomodation. It would feel more homely if the room be able to transfer into different spaces, like if you were able to hide kitchen and convert it into living area and then another part would have a bedroom space that can transer into office for example.
