📚 Description: I've always wanted to try one of these Jag-stang guitars out as I'd always see them while guitar hunting. I didn't think I would "like" it but it was certainly a piece of Fender history. For the 30th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind album - Fender reissued the Jagstang in the Mexico plant. It is a little different as compared to the original Crafted in Japan varieties - but I really enjoyed this short-scale Fender guitar!
Fender loaned me this guitar to make this video and paid me for my time. This is a sponsored episode

Kurt also (from what I remember I could be wrong)flipped the tailpiece around disconnected the springs and used it as a hard tail combined with gotoh TOM bridge makes it dead stable :) I have a 95 with a throughly 90s hardcase (covered in Jones Soda labels lol) in Sonic Blue with those mods... really nice and stable

It is said that Kurt was actually never really happy with this, apart from that he died before he could even finish working on this guitar, so these are actually still prototypes. As a die hard Nirvana Fan (which I used to be when I was a teen and still am to some extent), you're a lot closer to what Kurt actually liked and played by buying the Mexican Cobain Jaguar or trying to find one of the Japanese Cobain Mustangs on the used market. But yeah, I do like your demo and think that these Mexican Jag-Stangs do sound better than the first Japanese ones!

I mean, kind of, besides the quirky body it's basically a mustang so... not really that different from his mustang signature (or any mustang with a humbucker in the bridge). It's not like he had the most complex guitar tone you know

Kurt was happy for it to be a lefty and be durable enough to last more than a single show. Using Mesa Full Stacks aside, any guitar was going thru a Boss DS-1 so the guitar didn't itself matter as much as a means to an end. Kurt's greatest tool was his song writing ability and unique approach

This nailed that tone pretty much perfectly & the pups actually sounded better to me than they did in the original run. I thought those ones were ridiculously thin sounding back when they were released. I always liked Mustangs & Jaguars but to me they were pawn shop guitars. We bought them because they were cheap & fairly easy to find, not £1200-2000 guitars.

Would love to see you cover the Modern Player Mustang from several years ago. As far as I know it was the first Mustang with p-90’s but, unlike the current p90 Mustang that Squier is making, this one still had the 3 way switches above the pickups. It allowed a TON of super cool sounds. It also had a Pine body which was odd and made the guitar at least seem heavier than normal mustangs. I had one in surf green, and it was a very unique guitar.

While I wasn't the biggest Nirvana fan, I remember I was looking for my first electric after my first full time summer job. I got my original summer 1997 for $400-something, iirc. Of course an American Strat was $999 back then. Now American Original Strat is $2000 and this is $1200 or $2000 for the originals. I gotta say, the out of phase switch was what made me get it. However, in the late 90's the pickups were weak and anemic. The underpowered pickups plagued me in late 90's after HS and 2000's in bands in LA. Of course, now the movement is towards combos instead of stacks and front of house mic'd amps. Underwound vintage sounds are acceptable... but knowing Trogly's set up, I think these new pickups are a little more hot and voiced differently. Glad they went with Rosewood fingerboards. Personally, if I could go back in time, I would probably have gotten a G&L Fallout. Same looks but I've recently fallen in love with P90's. And Fallout has better tuning stability. Also, I didn't know short and full scale and always regretted the short scale on that JagStang. Still, warms my heart it came back.

At 11:20-ish if you loosen the two neck plate screws closest to the body a lot-then loosen the two neck plate screws closest to the neck a little bit you can actually tilt the neck and get access to the truss rod screw without taking the pickguard off (capo the strings at the first fret)

I don't even like Nirvana or Cobain, but I love this guitar, and I will never part with it. I didn't check the neck scale (it was a surprise gift and I was too excited to look into it) and put my regular D'Addario 8's on it. Way too loose. Went up to 9's and it's perfect.

Earnie Bailey had to change the bridge, put in a hot rails, and 500k pots. The proto also didn’t have a body contour which Kurt wanted in most of his guitars (besides the Univox which is paper thin). Kinda sucks he only played 2 shows with it. I think if he had another tour this guitar would’ve been a go-to. Also sucks that fender auctioned his drawings along with his fiesta red jagstang and cardboard pieces. I really wanted to see those at their US factory.

It's too bad to see Fender is still not using the bridge pickup switch to its full potential here. I've got a couple of Mustangs that I installed humbuckers in the bridge, and wired it so that toward bridge, it's standard series humbucker, middle off, then toward neck humbucker in parallel (or split coil if you prefer that). You can still get both pickups out of phase, or standard parallel with each other via the neck pickup switch position.

I think I'd rather wire one up like this: bridge switch is now a standard pickup selector, neck switch is both pickups in series position 1, both pickups in parallel position 2, both pickups out of phase position 3, stacked pots for both knobs; 1st knobs is master volume & sinna-split for the bridge pickup (basically an adjustable coil-split to dial in a perfect split tone, plus all those in-between tones you wouldn't normally get from splitting a humbucker) 2nd knobs is tone control for each pickup, but specifically those newish Fender tone controls that are notched in the middle and roll off treble when turning one way and roll off bass when turning the other way. Seems way more usable the regular tone controls already are.

That would basically be a 60's Vintera Strat in sunburst with a rosewood fretboard and a hot rail factory installed. It would also make sense to also make it available in white based on the 1992 MTV VMA guitar. I used to be a mega Nirvana fan but I don't really like some of the things he promoted in some of his songs, and knowing how he died listening to his music just bums me out, even the sound of his voice is kinda depressing even though I like the sound of it.

@@xsir_hcx3897 I'm able to get some really good tones out of my fender championship 100. It sounds good with anything from classic rock to punk rock. I have a American strat and I prefer the jaguar to it. Something about the binding on the headstock just make it feel alot more enjoyable to play. Also a side note. It tends to stay in tune for awhile. From sitting with temp change to playing for awhile it stays in tune very well. I can see why Kurt liked this guitar and it's set up.

I use a jaguar with 9's, the trick is to really break in the strings and to make sure the guitar is intonated PERFECTLY with a very low string height and a very smooth bridge, string tree, and nut. I know next to nothing about the mustang bridge so maybe theyre a bit different

Original run were ‘MADE in Japan’ (‘95-‘01). The ‘Crafted in Japan’ ones were a reissue (‘03-‘05). I have a fiesta red one and a sonic blue one. Both from ‘96 with the Fender 50th anniversary sticker on the headstock. With a few mods (SD JB bridge and Texas special neck pickups, pots, bone nuts, locking tuners) they are amazing playing and sounding guitars! People trash talk them… they’ve never touched one.

I bought a Jag-stang in 1999 for $600 it was fiesta red and it looked very similar to this version. The sound was too chunky for my taste and it became more for looks than for playing. I sold it in 2003 for $500 now I'm wishing I would've held onto it. I was a huge Nirvana fan in my younger years which was the main reason for buying it. I might eventually buy another one but I'm gonna wait for the prices to drop, which I'm sure they will eventually, before I decide if it's a guitar I want in my arsenal.

Just can't get over that body style, but if I got one, I would do a coil split or series parallel for the bridge switch. I mean, you can put the pickups out of phase with the other switch, so having more options with the bridge switch would be cool.

ln the mid 80s me and some friends opened up a guitar teaching studio. We bought 4 new red knob Princeton chorus and 2 Ampeg bass amps. We also decided to buy 6-8 beginner friendly electrics w/ one acoustic steel string and one nylon. l bought in one day 2 fender jaguars, a bronco mustang, a mustang, gibson les paul jr and a melody maker. All USA guitars and l paid less than $1000. l bought them from the classifieds and at a couple of pawnshops. The most expensive one was the melody maker at 250. l bought the Bronco for 50. l cant imagine what people would pay for them now. l still have 2 red knob PC's BTW and they still work flawlessly.

To echo a lot of the other commenters, this utterly nails Kurt's tone (combined with your amp of choice). The price might be a bit much, but if someone's trying to get the Nirvana sound, it might be worth it. And that's definitely one of the darkest bridge humbucker sounds I've ever heard in any guitar demo. That's good to know when it comes to modding my own instruments. Also, a set of .11 GHS Boomers might help keep that in tune.

Some differences between this and the original MIJ models that I notice from the video, pickguard is 3-ply, originals were 2-ply, body is alder instead of Basswood on the original. Also the Neck Plate is simply blank on the originals. One thing i was surprised was that this model didn't have a "Designed by Kurt Cobain" decal on the back of the neck like the originals did.

5:13 pretty sure that the pickups are wired in parallel no matter what position the switch is on. the reason it goes out of phase is when the pickup leads are swapped, so the pup signals are "inverted" relative to each other which is what does the phase cancellation. i modified my jazzmaster to have the upper switch go from parallel to series and while it certainly has a distinct character of its own, putting neck and bridge in series sounds nothing like OOP

It amazes me that ANY guitar is still made where you have to remove the neck to adjust the truss -rod. WHY? For "vintage specs"? So many possible pitfalls in repeatedly removing/reattaching a neck. Is head stock access or an access channel in the body THAT unacceptable to purists? Guitarist can be have strange priorities about these things.
