Time for the general to copy the leader once again. Great truck Ford, I personally have no need for a vehicle like this or I’d own one, but I know a lot of people do! Great video as usual guys!
Mournful3ch0 how many ways are there to style a long wagon? FWIW this expedition looks far better than the current GM offerings but the prior expedition was a boat anchor compared.
This was a good video I believe this is the best SUV I’ve ever seen you test good job guys I send my customers to your RU-vid channel so they can watch videos of different vehicles towing I sale campers for a living
4 gauge Electric fans have belts? No wonder you think it takes 5 hours to change a fanbelt... On a more serious note, every modern car will be more complex than its predecessor. That's simply how technology has come about in these computers on wheels. Doesnt discount the capability and "TOP NOTCH"ness of the OP's comment though.
Alan Bowers It doesn't mean the products will be unreliable. What's more reliable, a model t or a new ford? Thr answer is obvious, most of these will last hundreds of thousands of miles without many issues, that's just how new cars are. I agree they're harder and more expensive to fix, but the trade off is they don't need to be fixed near as much.
Puff the Magic Dragon sure I agree. My point was merely for 4 gauge who doesn’t seem to actually have experience on modern cars. Certain aspects can be more unreliable but like you said in general they are better than they were.
I through the box away, can't remember. bought them from Walmart. The suction cup on the mirror face. That way you can adjust them with the power mirror.
Top of Ike, towing and still only at half throttle. The automotive industry has truly come a long way. I’ve made that drive several times and that is impressive by any manufacturer. These are good times in this segment for sure.
Very impressive! This vehicle is probably best in its class by a good margin and this episode may be TFL Truck's best production yet quality-wise. You have raised the bar. GM and Chrysler have their work cut-out for them, the race is on -- its good for us all.
Ford really knows how to make a nice SUV. It is still a massive shame they gave up on smaller cars altogether - the Fusion we have is such a great car.
took mine off road with the family last week. Went to several mountain peaks in Idaho near Yellowstone. One trail was was only designed for side by sides, but the Max was amazing! super smooth ride, handled the rocks, ruts, loose dirt/gravel with ease.
Yeah that's chevy.... can't tow can't OFFROAD for shit they get stuck in grass with 4x4 lol But as a Toyota fan - our yotas tow just fine no issues other than breaks & Toyota breaks although reliable absolutely suck .... tundra Tacoma FGT SGT TGT and most all Tacoma breaks sucked & Chevy can tow more weight but it's newer trucks suck at gearing! Most people who want to tow with tundras do air ride & stuff & some swap out our axles for Chevy 2500 axles for towing
Even Corolla & camery brakes suck .... the RAV4 06+ had decent brakes and the newest tundra has been improved but for towing I've herd it's still not going to compare to diesel braking wise.... & TWINN turbos on a 5.7L would just be scary AF....i imagine the supercharger does VERY well!
No. A couple others had really low brake app counts. There have even been times where a particular example of a particular truck model has had more or fewer brake apps than a previous example (of the same truck) they tested. The brake app test is useless IMO. I get the logic behind it, but the results they've gotten over the last couple years they've had it, indicates to me that there are factors outside just a truck's engineering that affect it.
TFLtruck... very good video (as always)! I'm glad Ford recalibrated the transmission too. Hey, you guys did do a sound decibel test on the way up the Ike! Can you tell your fans how quiet it was? Thanks
Thanks Nathan! Here's another question I thought of after watching the video again. Does the new Expedition have an automatic light check function like the Nissan Titans? For 81K it really should, right?!!! Please let us know.
Man O War depends on the terrain, and depends on how much of a lift tires could allow without rubbing the fenders themselves. But many run larger more aggressive tires on stock suspension to get that little bit more with good success most of the time.
With a payload under 1500 pounds it ain’t going to be too realistic towing much above 5000 pounds. Especially if you fill many of those seats. If this had 2000 pounds of payload available it would be a literally perfect rv hauler for a family of 4-5.
Mostly correct, but vehicle has been out for two years now. Under 6500lbs and 23ft trailer, it performs amazing and minimal issues, those with problems are generally towing at or above 7500lbs with an insufficient wdh hitch and >30ft trailers... the area everyone is testing now is popular 6300lb uvwr 32ft trailers ... Mostly with good news from what I can tell, but lots of people using blue ox or pure pride $3,000 hitch setups to get rid of trailer sway danger.
Wow, Ford really did well this time. This vehicle is clearly a massive improvement over the previous generation. Competition is good for everyone. Thanks TFL, you are the best!
D Jay T The only advantage of that would be offroading and maybe towing. Things most explorer owners will never do, I didn't say no owners, I said most. Plus, if you wanted a badass offroader , why not buy a raptor or the new Bronco that's rumored to be priced similarly to the explorer, according to a supposed ford engineer claiming they wanted a 30k starting price, but that's just a claim, who knows if it's true. The 2011 to current imo body explorers are great, among some of the best family cars out there, aside from hardcore offroading, they do everything well. They're safe, reliable, reasonable fast, attractive, comfortable, decently roomy, and enjoyable to drive. The old explorers were great, my grandparents owned one from the early 90s until 2010, when it was totaled and they now own a '04 explorer, they love them, but they love my 2017. I don't even have a loaded up model, it's the base because my parents didn't want a huge amount of tech features, plus we wanted a car that would be reliable long term. The higher end explorers are pretty reliable, but not as reliable as the lower trim levels it seems.
I actually drove on that hill the first time. Going down hill we almost burned the brakes on our rental Dodge Caravan. Going up hill, the 3.6 V6 with 4 adults was not happy at all. :-)
7000 pounds is a hitch weight of AT LEAST 700 pounds. The three of you (assuming 225 pounds) weight almost 700 pounds so you were just at the cargo capacity of the vehicle. If the hitch weight is over 700 pounds, which I suspect it is, there's a good chance you were over the rated cargo capacity of the vehicle.
There should be some examples now that the EB V6 has been on sale since 2011 in the F-150, Flex, Explorer, and Lincoln MKT and Navigator. I doubt the EB V6 is especially unreliable, but when it comes time to fix something, the repair costs are likely to be higher than what's needed to fix an OHV V8. The mileage improvement claims have already shown to be largely nil.
SurelyYewJest Well there's always the v8 option with the 5.0. Personally, when I bought my explorer, I went with the 3.5 duratec, which is supposidly, a very reliable na engine, but I have no gripes with ecoboost engines, I just agree that a na engine will be cheaper to mantain, but that doesn't mean a eb is unreliable like you said, it just means it'll be more expensive to mantained over a long period of time, 10-15 yrs. I'm essentially just restating your points because I liked your post, well said.
Puff the Magic Dragon I don’t believe there is a 5.0 option as of right now... I am kinda surprised by that but it makes sense the 5.0 while an incredible engine doesn’t really have a lot of low end torque to move a heavy SUV...or it wasn’t getting the CAFE numbers mpg Ford needed.
The old guy is always giving incorrect information when it comes to turbos lmao The turbos on this truck are not in a compound configuration, they are twins (identical specs) In another video he confuses Twin Scroll exhaust housing of the 2.3 for twin turbo lol Dude needs to do his homework before tossing out specs and explanations.
This is why I always say Toyota may be more reliable suvs long term but overall ford does well in most areas. Technology, safety, towing, ride quality, family friendly=Grand scale of things better. My assumption is this may be a better tow rig than lets say a sequoia or landcruiser.
Andrew Ochoa Well, I just came from Scotty Kilmer's live q&a and he had plenty to say about GM and FCA products. Avoid them. He recommends Toyota cars and trucks and if you want a big three, Ford trucks.
I think scotty kilmer has a nice channel but he's also said plenty on gas turbo vehicles which seems to be the power plant of fords choice. Not to mention I can find another guy who has just as bad things to say about Ford products. Everyone has their take on things but I completely agree with staying away from Fiat company.
Troy Strain ive had plenty of GM products and they are extremely reliable. I have also had toyotas, one that currently sits in my driveway, and they have all been shit. We had some fords, they were ok but they always had recalls, we got locked out of the transmission so it didnt go anywhere, the brakes were shit, and was having electrical issues at 8 years old. Our family vehicle is a GMC yukon and that thing does a lot of city driving, and a lot of highway trips and that suv has been fine since we bought it new in 2004. Scotty kilmer is biased as hell, if you say a toyota is broken, he will say its user error. Similar shit you get from a toyota dealer when you try to use their warranty
Andrew Ochoa Yeah, he tells you not to buy the ecoboost engines or any turbo engines, if you plan on keeping the vehicle for along time or past a 100k.
Have fun filling up every 150 miles or so towing. My 35 gallon tank 3.5 eco boost truck only makes it about 290 miles towing my 5000 pound boat getting 8mpg
Trailer weight of 7000 lbs they didn't state the tongue weight so assuming 15% 1050lbs another 600 lb for passengers, 85 lbs for the hitch and lets just say 100 lbs of cameras gear etc... That puts us at a cargo weight of 1835 lbs. I wonder what the cargo capacity is of this SUV?
This is TOTAL bullshit... do your testing in the middle of the summer and watch it overheat!!! I have a 2016 and tow a 6000 pound boat. It gets hot no matter what. Overheats almost every time if temps are above 80-85 going up passes in Colorado.
I don't do any towing but Kent saying it was cold got me thinking...what effect does temperature have on a vehicles towing performance? I would thing MPG would decrease, brake fade would be less, and maybe a bunch of other things. Any thoughts?
I know that road very well. First drove it in 1973 when it opened. Drove Loveland Pass before that. Still like the pass, more scenic. When they first head up hill you see condos on the right. Owned one and a house and property for over 15 years. I might have driven that road 3 00+ times. The gas station they stopped at is 1/2 mile to the north. A 7-11. Was impressed by the trans grade braking. Someone said use cheaper brakes instead of trans. They do not know how to drive in the mountains. Have smelled overheated brakes many times at the. Seen several accidents from overheated brakes. In the last scene standing in the parking area. Look at the mountain behind the left .guy. That is Mt Bethel. The 2 dark vertical lines are snow fences to keep snow off the avalanche chute to the right, Loveland Basin ski area is a mile closer. Feb 1988 they got 77 inches of snow in 5 days. CDOT caused a avalanche there. Buried the interstate. I had to sit there 5 1/2 hours for one lane to get cleared.
Its a timed test, but either its pedal to the metal, the speed limit, or 60 mph? Not sure how that equates to fair. If the expedition could attain 70 mph then why was it held at 60? Or was it full throttle? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just a bit confusing. Has the testing changed? Are they all going to do 60?
Is it safer to tow a heavy load with an F150 or are the Expedition and F150 basically same truck towing when it comes to a long (ish) RV and moderate wind conditions?
Think of the expy as derated f150 because of heavier interior weight and more cushioned rear suspension. If you can live with slightly lower towing and payload, the expedition provides a better driving experience - especially with more passengers.
Not sure if it’s a colour profile you guys are using in your videos but lately they all have a green tinge. Some shots more than others. The beginning shot of the guys in the cab is very green.
Ford knows how to make an suv how do you think they've kept the explorer on the market for 26 years while Chevy had to cancel the trail blazer and dodge didn't introduce the durango until 1998
I just wanna say that I’ve been watching y’alls videos for a long time now. Whoever filmed and edited this did an amazing job. The b-roll shots were perfectly timed and I saw everything I wanted to see as you talked about the vehicle. Quality has definitely jumped up here. Looking forward to more videos!
great review. I am a little biased, currently on my second expedition, and hoping to upgrade to the 2018 soon. good point about towing help for the occasional tow-er. We tow a camper only about 4-5 times per year so any extra stability and assistance is welcomed, especially with a vehicle full of people.
scotty_rides we tow will a vehicle full of people too. I had a difficult time finding a 7 passenger SUV with enough payload to support both the camper and family before I bought my current SUV. Do you know what the payload ratings are for the new Expedition? I can't find it anywhere.
I have and looked again since the revision. No mention of payload ratings or GVWR for the Expedition. Although I did see page 37 states the receiver is rated at 930 lbs max with weight distribution so that is limiting factor for me. I use 10% of trailer weight on the hitch as a minimum not a maximum.
I am interested in this SUV with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package to tow a Winnebago trailer rated at 6620 dry weight. This will be to use probably like 5-10 times a year for our family of 3. I am new to the RV experience and would like to have feedback. I am not too much fan of a pickup all year long and thought this SUV might be the solution. Thank you
NWI It's going to be a good battle for marketshare. Personally ford and gm are both doing great right now imo, hopefully, competition like this continues to creare better products from both brands, sick corvette btw.
I think Ford is kicking GM's ass to hell and back on the interior game. I legitimately think GM is taking five massive steps backward, going back to acres of hard, poorly fitting, and weak black plastics with therrible graining. I hate to say it, but I work at a Chevy dealer - I am entirely unimpressed with nearly everything they have out right now. I think Buick and GMC, on the other hand, are doing great interior-wise.
previous generation expedition looks WAY better IMHO, this new one just looks like generic suv #465,489,654,894,615,489, i'll be sticking with the 2017 expedition personally
nathan adlen I understand but it’s mostly built to haul around families for vacations. Does ford offer towing mirrors?? If so you should take back at least one point!! LOL. Keep me posted. Good hearing from you!! You Rock!!
The tow package should include larger mirrors, or mirrors that extend or flip out. Otherwise I'm very interested in this truck it looks like an amazing machine
nathan adlen ok I understand but it does have the option for BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert with Trailer Tow Monitoring is standard on Ford Expedition Limited and Platinum. So I guess technology to Ford takes over the mirrors. I think you still need to make an adjustment on your two pints. Maybe just one??? What do you think partner?? Keep us posted please maybe with a follow up video. Thanks.
I'd like to see the same test ran on the new Navigator (that has the Raptor's engine). What the heck, bump it up to 10,000 lbs for the Lincoln - no sweat. :-)
The Navigator is the same vehicle as the Expedition, just some cosmetic and interior changes, so you get relatively the same capabilities between the 2, with the Navigator being slightly lower on towing/payload due to added gadgetry. I'm sure either would pull 10k, but for legal reasons not a good idea.
Does the Expedition have the 2nd generation 3.5L Ecoboost with both Port and Direct Injection, or the older version with just direct injection. The 3.5 L in the 2018 F150 has both Port and Direct Injection. Are the LED lights the same crappy ones on the 2018 Ford F150 which received a Poor rating by the IIHS?
Take it off-road, and do highway loop empty and try highway loop with trailer, please and thank you. What you guys can do maybe city driving MPG. Since they say 17 or whatever on these cars / trucks but its never accurate. Just like you guys do the highway maybe you can try at least 20 miles city and the rest we can calculate or 50 miles its not to long. I feel like you dont need to do the 100 miles city.
Hired this ford from Alamo in Boston up to niagra falls down to Washington DC New York Boston beautiful truck so comfortable and smooth wish I could of took it back to the uk GMC Yukon vs Ford Expedition both great trucks
When are you pitting the midsize crossovers against each other. 5,000+ would be interesting as many people would be towing a boat roughly 4500lbs. 4runner, sante fe, edge, and what ever Nissan now has for the weight range.
Hi guys, here in the UK we have had severe weather (snow & ice) as a result of cold air from Siberia moving west over Europe. Is it possible with all your knowledge of off-roading and 4x4s to provide simple guidance of what sort of tyres work in which types of weather. A lot of people are buying small SUVs here in Europe, some with 4wd and some with 2wd. However when bad weather hits, the country grinds to a halt because people are uneducated about how to drive in bad weather, how to prepare their vehicles and what to do if they get stuck. I believe a simple video showing the different tyre types (winter vs all weather) and accessories such as snow socks, chains etc - how and when to use them would prevent so many unnecessary incidents Thanks - peace and love from the (freezing) UK 🤧
I can watch TFL reviews over and over. Today I watched the Canadian review a riding mower, a riding mower and I watched like he was reviewing the next Gen F150, TFL is pretty much why I RU-vid. Every presenter does an awesome Job. A Russian, a drag racer, a slick well dressed fancy fellow, a Cowboy, a smart young college man and a bearded Canadian walked into a bar and created the best show on RU-vid ,,,,,,TFL baby!
I recently began driving an '18 Ford 150 Raptor and tow on occasion with a single axle trailer loaded right up to its GWR of 3,500# and tongue weight just under 400#. I thought I was nuts because I NEVER have to brake in tow mode on long steep downhill runs. It grade shifts excellently and I think (not totally sure) that it applies the brakes itself (no brake lights noticed) to hold back. So you guys having only one early on brake application on Ike, maybe I am not so nutty.
