NEW 2019 Nvidia Shield TV vs Shield TV Pro! | Which Should you get?

There is a very important difference - the non-Pro runs the 32-bit version of the OS whereas the Pro runs the 64-bit version. Certain apps, like HBO Max, freeze and stutter on the 32-bit OS when running in 4k

Having owned both for 6 months I would recommend you just go with the pro. I’ve been having several issues on the tube and both have same exact add ons and apks. That 1GB of ram and 64bit vs 32bit makes a difference and I mainly use it for streaming. Just go pro and you will be happy!

I got the 2017 model as an orientation gift when I interned there, it’s 2021 and it’s still one of my fav devices. Only problem is its controllers broke after few years

If you are not into game stream or stadia then the best streaming player right now is the Roku premier .. as it supports Netflix , amazon prime , google movies , you tube and Apple TV .. all in one package for a low price.

As much as I like the shield TV the price is a little steep for both of these units. First off 2 years later and I'm hearing that the X1+ chip is only around 15% faster realistically. Then on top of that in this day and age they're still only offering it with the same 16GB of storage, so if you want to do anything beyond installing a couple streaming apps on it external storage is going to be absolutely necessary with only 16GB of storage. Then even a bigger slap-in-the-face is now for that same $200 I spent for my 2017 model you don't get a controller with it anymore. This pro model without a controller realistically should be around $150. Cuz when you add the price of the controller on top of the $200 for the Pro you're getting very close to that $300 mark and quite honestly at that price point you might as well buy a switch, PS4, or Xbox. And if you plan on buying this without a controller just to be a streaming box $200 is pretty hard to justify with all the other options out there. And the same thing here with a non pro version... this really should be priced around $100 to be competitive with other devices out there even with the impressive upscaling and stuff. And the other issue I have with the non-pro version is that lack of USB ports. The remote on my 2017 Shield died and trying to find an actual shield replacement remote is very difficult and the ones that you can find are over $100, which is just absolutely ridiculous to pay over 50% of the cost of the whole entire Shield package just for the remote. The only real decent remote alternatives, are remotes that use a USB wireless 2.4ghz transmitter... so the lack of USB ports makes it even more difficult to find a replacement remote if this one dies to. And at $150 it's pretty tough pill to swallow to have to buy a whole new system just to get a replacement remote. I really do believe these are the best streaming devices out there but they are just priced too high! At $100 and $150 for pro it would be a very easy decision for me to upgrade all my streaming devices to these new Shield devices because I think they're that good but for the $50 more that they want for each device that makes it a much tougher sell.

The non pro TV has a microSD port. The pro has a USB. The Pro lets people who are in the Smarthings universe use their sticks to boot. I'd say if you play a lot of Android games, I'd go with the Pro. Couple little tidbits: 1- Is it a deal breaker for some out there if the HDMI spec is pre 2.1 and you are locked in to it? 2.0x bandwidth supports 18Gbps. 2.1 supports 48. Do you need it? Probably not right now, but I keep my sets for quite a while, and it would be nice to be somewhat future proof when content is available. 2- Unless they updated it without me noticing, it still does not support RU-vid HDR 60fps as of yet.

Can the plex server on the Pro model be used to serve the Plex app on the non-pro model? So I could put a Pro at my house and various non-pros in other rooms?

Congrats on kid #2 ASB. My question is relation to specs. On paper there is seemingly only a 1GB RAM difference between Pro and Non pro models so in your opinion, is that worth the uptick in price (excluding chassis change obviously)? Just ordered online the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro, looking forward into integrating into my family room console, converting my 4K Smart TV into an optimized productive workspace and playspace.

For the extra $50, I'd go with the pro.

When you do the comparison I would like to see a heavily compressed 720p movie file (400 Mb or so ) and a 1080p movie file ( 980 Mb or so ) both played on an old Shield and a new Shield Pro on a 4K TV ( preferably a Sammy or LG ). So we can see if the AI Upscale is worth the upgrade as that is the only real feature. My old Sheild still destroys any other stream box.

Great video. You stated the remote has an button to turn the shield off. Does this button also turn the TV off and on? Also, I don't think the standard was made to complete with Amazon. The firestick at $50 is still the top sell streaming device in the country. I can't imagine paying $150 for simply streaming with no additional plugins. You and others may feel differently.

For your review: Can you please check fan noise? When does it kick in? How noticeable is it? Especially when watching TV in the evenings. And I'd like to put the Pro IN my lowboard which has locked doors. Is heat going to be an issue? Thank you!

Ran out and exchanged my old one for the new Pro soon as I seen the videos about it. It is worth the upgrade to me being that I watch TV on a Oled LG. So the upscaling is very apparent when watching anything. And the fact I can find my remote now because of the tracking feature makes it even better.

The original shield still does what it has to do for me. I don't have a 4k tv so no need to upgrade at this moment.

I would probably be best looking at the Pro model. This does seem to be better matched with a basic TV rather than a smart TV.

Not either one, they missed the mark on both, 2 gig ram and 8 gig storage, 4 gig ram and 16 gig storage, it is 2019, 4 gig ram on both, the tube 32gig storage and the pro 64 gig👍👌🇨🇦❤

Some one on RU-vid showed the pro to have same spec as old shield and showed specs on screen. Or is yours right. His showed no x1 Pro ship (chip not ship) sorry.

Just curious. When using the remote did you have problems with the Netflix button being a hair trigger? It seems every time I try to change something, just TOUCHING the Netflix button triggers the app. It got to the point where I stopped using the remote and instead used a PS4 controller to operate it.

Going to stay with my Nvidia Shield TV 2017. Most reviewers have stated they haven't seen a 25% increase in performance during benchmark tests. Plus, whose idea was it to make the new standard model a cylinder??? No upgrades worth changing to the newer model IMO.

Does the transcoding offset the load from the Plex media Server?

I have the pro, best decision I made yet on box streaming devices. I use to buy other boxes like h96 max plus and all of started crumped out by the second or 3 year.

So far from everything that I have loaded. At first I thought the Mi Box 3 was really good, still do. The Fire Stick is the slowest, then I came across Apple TV 4K, they are a HEADACHE to sideload. I sideloaded my Macbook pro like a Nvidia Shield Tv Pro, which is the smoothest and the Winner!!!

Nvida tv I feel if you allready own a n earlier sheild is a downgrade as it has only 2gb rom where the earlier versions and pro has 3gb rom and the nvidia tv has no usb ports and only 8gb ram

So happy I still have my still working strong 2015 ShieldTV Pros and 16GB versions, the ones released since then seem like downgrades. Dolby Vision and the AI video upscale isn’t enough to buy.

Please benchmark it so we can see if it is really an upgrade. I have a theory it is the same 2017 unit with a new remote.

Hey. I have a pair of NON BLUETOOTH Xbox One controllers. I use them to play via USB on my PC. They have wireless that you can use with the USB xbox adapter, but as I said, no bluetooth. My question is: Will i be able to use them in the new Nvidia Shield Pro? Do i have to plug the controllers via USB as I do with the PC? Or do i have to buy the wireless adapter for the xbox one controllers and plug that into the shield? I've seen that only the shield pro has USB. My PC is far away from the TV so conecting the controllers directly to the PC it's not an option. Thanks

My thing is there are android boxes on Amazon and other sites that "say" they have 4g of ram and 64+g storage. As long as it's android you can put any app on it, I'm using Nvidia games on my Firestick 4k right now. These boxes are like 100$ so would that be a better deal? Is Nvidia just like Apple and selling it expensive because of branding?

A few questions indeed: 1. It apparently comes with Plex installed. Does it come with free HW transcoding (a premium plex feature) in Plex like previous generations 2. How big can the microSD be? This is really important now that the USB port does not exist on the smaller 2019 Plex.

Other than a die shrink and clock boost, the Tegra X1+ isn't really any different to the current X1, so I'd be interested to know if nVidia are going to bring this AI upscaling to the older boxes, especially the 2017 model (which I have). The 2017 model isn't a slouch by any means, so I don't see why they couldn't do it - unless they want to keep the new features on the new hardware!

You're better off buying the Pro TBH the price difference is not too drastic and you’re getting a way better device.
