This is my first look at the new Hyundai Tucson, due to go on sale late in the first half of 2021. It's a pre-production model, for visual display only.

A heavy commercial burden attaches to Tucson. It’s Hyundai’s top-selling model, totalling seven million units in traffic so far. That’s since 2004. Seven million - so if you parked them all nose-to-tail they would encircle the earth. That’s a lot of Tucsons. (Roughly one for every resident of Arizona...)
And this one is the 4th Generation - it’s a little bigger but, frankly, a lot more polished. Just don’t be breath-holding on this. Not yet. This report is just a tease, of sorts. We won’t get this new Tucson in Straya until late in the first half of 2021.
Of course, the principal design challenge with all new models is instantly to make the outgoing one look just a little bit crap - because nothing motivates an otherwise happy owner to upgrade more than an injection of new hotness on the showroom floor. And in this respect, I think they’ve knocked it out of the park. It’s definitely a head-turner. And it makes the outgoing one look instantly obsolete.
Apparently there’s that new CVVD technology as well - the continuously variable valve duration thingo, which is quite clever because it improves combustion efficiency across a range of operating conditions and punts fuel economy to the next level without compromising refinement or power delivery. So that’s quite a neat thermodynamics hack.
You can expect the full safety suite with new Tucson, which is to say: top-shelf crashworthiness - including, probably, that new headbutt-preventing centre airbag between the seats at the front, plus (sadly) all of the borderline annoying, false-positive-overdosed crash prevention stuff, which is there principally to hump ANCAP’s leg so enthusiastically, in pursuit of five stars. All the carmakers are doing this lately, not just Hyundai. An unfortunate and annoying sign of the times.
The interior is rather gorgeous. The exterior is edgy. Not everyone’s gunna be infatuated with the sharp angles.
So, basically, I think new Tucson, when it lobs, is going to make some competitors - notably X-TRAIL, CR-V, RAV4, maybe even CX-5, and certainly Sportage - look old. It’s a super-competitive segment, so they’ll need to be sharp with the price. But if you’re in the market for a five-seat SUV and you’re not up against the pressure of time, I’d give it four or five months. Because this is a segment disruptor right here.
I’ll keep you posted when I know more.

@AndyG73
@AndyG73 4 года назад
To be honest, I wasn't that taken with the styling of the new Tucson - the exterior looks very fussy with lots of odd lines and creases, rather like the design of the latest generation Toyota SUVs and crossovers. The interior was ok, though the dash display for the speedo etc looked a bit tacky and not really 'life-like'. One downside of having lots of odd shapes on the car, including the lights, is that it significantly bumps up the cost of manufacturing, and as a consequence, the cost of replacements and insurance costs. I'd rather go for a more minimalist, elegant design that looks 'classically' stylish and where, hopefully, parts are cheaper because they are easier to make. It's one of the reasons I really like the styling of the current generation crop of Mazdas.
@AndyG73
@AndyG73 4 года назад
@@adrianwilliamson6861 My criticism of the interior was really only on the dash display area. Everything else was fine, not brilliant, but decent. I agree about the exterior - going over the top on styling (rather like with women and their outfits, make-up and cosmetic surgery) is something that is indeed a in-fashion today, not tomorrow look. I prefer the 'less-is-more' approach to designs.

What's with the rear indicators? Why have they moved them so low and so far away from the brake lights? I know there are some models of vehicles with low indicators, but if a vehicle is going to turn and the brake lights come on as they slow down, the indicators are not so noticeable when they are located so low. Personally I think they are dangerous.

On the subject of silent electric cars: Electric cars are virtually silent at very low speeds, such as you might expect in a car park, or just after starting. I myself have had close encounters with electric cars for that reason. Another is that there is no audible warning before they take off. An internal combustion car has to start the engine before driving away, which gives you at least a second's warning. An electric car can just start moving without warning. Don't get me wrong: In both cases I had been partially at fault for not being as aware of my surroundings as I should have been, but that silent engine is not making it easier.

Nice looking car. Would it comvince me to hold off on the new Kluger until this out and really compare? Maybe. And I'm a Toyota guy through and through.

I have a question unrelated to this video. Why don't diesels suffer from inlet valve carbon build up, being injected?

I hope Hyundai is making their electronic park brake module more reliable than they did on the 2013 Santa Fe. $3700 to replace the EPB module if it sh*ts itself. On my 3rd EPB module since I bought the car new. Lucky the first one went in the first week of ownership. The second one went a month ago. Gotta love the stealership. I really enjoy your vids. Keep em coming John.

11:30 I sleep in the room closest to the road. I can hear cars at night on the road 200m apart. Wheel noise is enough to detect vehicles in the very few situations where you wouldn't need to look thrice before crossing the road. If everyone gets quiet cars we would be able to hear them all fine as we adjust. If people won't look before crossing the street, then let natural selection take over. Same could be said for those drivers who rely on the bells and chimes to drive safely. Look for danger or shake hands with it.

that three way bend on the door is going to be a nightmare for a panel beater if ever in a bingle. most likely very expensive

Back of the envelope calculation tells me that 10sq meters or about 3kW of solar panels (folded out from my camper trailer) sitting in the sun all day will allow me to travel for around 50km, obviously at night and slowly to reduce resistance losses. Then I'd have to camp another day in full sun to go a further 50km the next night. It sounds like a dream holiday - Round Australia in 2 years, maybe more. and iff the weather is good 90% of the time, for free, except for tyres, services, camping fees, food etc..

10 sq m is 2kW at noon in summer...
@MiniLuv-1984
@MiniLuv-1984 4 года назад
@@AutoExpertJC Yeah, perhaps a little optimistic, though, to be fair, I based this on the average solar exposure in Alice springs which averages (for 10sqm) 60kWh per day or 12kWh per day as captured electrical energy (Average centre of Australia right?). So at 205W/km, that gives me around 48km. East coast will mean shorter nightly trips :)

why??? why those rear reverse lights and indicators separate from rear brake light assembly? at bumper? easily flogged by mud, covered by dust and flood water... what on the earth they thinking? to make brake lights looking some sort like jewellery... I cannot fathom this trend... perhaps it's cheaper (from car manufacturer perspective) to make reverse light & indicators separate form taillight assembly?

Having bought a current model Tuscon last year, I wish they had a 2.4 ltr engine. While the 2 litre is fine, id like more go without a turbo.

I have watched the overseas reviews of the Tucson (Redline Reviews and Asian Petrolhead) and liked the overall view and interior especially. The only thing that I am not keen on is the extended DRLs on the sides of the grill.
