Hi Brian. I have a question that I hope you could answer for me. I have a 2020 Mazda 3 and the dealership reminded me to use only 91 octane fuel. Nothing higher than that coz of the engine being high compression. But i see on videos, and on yours too, that when they talk about power specs it says for example 120hp if you use premium fuel and 110hp if you use regular fuel. Here in the Philippines regular fuel is 91 octane and premium is 95 octane. So my question is, is it safe to use premium fuel on a 2020 Mazda 3 despite Mazda clearly saying to use 91 octane? I’m asking coz there’s a big difference in hp. Thanks

I don't know if it helps but I had a 2015 Mazda 3 G engine and in England you can only get 95 or above octane so 95 was recommended. I now have the skyactiv x and that also recommends 95 octane so I would use that if I was you, 91 sounds a bit low the higher the compression of an engine usually means a higher octane fuel is needed, I don't know where your dealership got their information from. different countries have different ways of grading petrol for instance in the US they have 87 octane fuel but it is the equivalent to a higher rating in Europe it may be the same in the Philippines. your 91 fuel may be the same as 95 here.

@@pillred5974 thanks for the info. That's also what i was thinking, higher octane rating for high compression engines. Some gasoline stations here particularly Shell have 91 95 97 octane ratings. Another even has 100. Also mazda dealerships here recommend that we use Shell fuels only. And if i ask them why (including the octane rating to use) they can't really give me a specific answer. Either they tell you that mazda engines are high compression and "sensitive" or they tell you nothing at all.

@@TheBoobieMan If a petrol is rated 95 octane it doesn't really matter what brand it is, I have watched vids on various brands of petrol and apart from some of them having additives that are supposed to offer cleaning properties they are basically the same, I certainly wouldn't worry about using another brand I have had at least 3 different brands of petrol in mine with no problem. Mazda in the UK certainly don't tell us to use a certain brand of petrol. Also don't bother using a higher rating in your car it won't make it perform any better and you will just be wasting your money maybe in a high performance turbo charged car it's worth using super unleaded (97 100) but in a normal car like ours there is no benefit at all.
