As much as I would like a Model 3 or Model Y, this VW ID.4 just makes sense for me. Sure I can't watch Netflix on the screen or make fart sounds with the horn but for the money that I save, I could buy lots and lots of iPads and whoopee cushions. Essentially I could get a loaded ID.4 AWD for the price of a RWD Range Plus Model 3. Both have similar ranges but this one has so much more room.

For me, Gasoline makes sense. These Electrics are half baked and come with too many sacrifices in relation to everyday practical use. In the end, the issue is liberty and freedom to move around freely. From that standpoint, a gasoline vehicle is not far removed from a mule or a horse. An electric car with all its computers gives too much powers to organizations outside of my control. I am always going to own a carburetor vehicle and an old school Diesel engine car that I can operate using home made diesel.. no way I am going to let go of my ability to move around without a computer

B stands for brake. Its purpose is to provide “engine braking” on long and steeper downhill sections. You’ll need less time on the brake pedal. Even my old P2 Prius has it and it is only used for downhill sections. In the Prius in “ B” it spins the IC engine with the MG1 electric motor to dissipate the energy from regenerative braking once the buffer battery is full.

OK but I want to know if the receiver in ID.4 is 4G or 5G? I have an e-Golf with a 3G receiver and they are stopping the Car-Net service to these cars in January 2022 -- even for 2019 models. What if we bought an ID.4 with a 4G receiver that would be switched off in a couple of years and Car-Net would thus no longer be available? Would VW help pay for the 5G replacement? VW really, _really_ has to get its act together over this kind of tech faux-pas to avoid embittering drivers of its otherwise excellent electric vehicles.

I think VW nailed this one. We're still at least 4 years away from a replacement, wife bought an Equinox last summer, I just got the Santa Cruz in September, but I've been watching the EV options with interest, as we commute 200km/day to work. MY issue remains, as the town we work in has zero EV infrastructure anywhere and a top-up isn't possible during the work day, that once you reduce the range by 25% (5-80% is the charge time stat always quoted and also the recommended operating range for most batteries) you're at 300km. Cool. But in a NW Ontario (or any prairie province for that matter) winter you lose about 40% range (not to mention charging speed reduces) and now you're at 180km and a single return trip to/from work becomes a questionable prospect. Yes, technically on a 100% charge that's still fine ... but going that route also will shorten battery life - and there's the natural degradation that will reduce range over time. That's the part about EVs that keep them off my list. They are fantastic if you don't put on a lot of mileage. If you do, and don't have an option to "top up the tank" they fall flat - at least in the winter around here. I want to go electric at some point, but I don't want it to be a "3 season" vehicle - especially when that 4th season can last 4 months of the year. So really, I can't consider anything for my use with less than 500km of range. Hopefully we'll get there in a few years, if some of the solid state battery tech that's rumoured comes to pass!
@paulm6481
@paulm6481 2 года назад
Electrics as you state don’t work for flyover country. They are city vehicles. And you need to have a home that has charging available so you are not reliant on outside infrastructure. Until they make charging available at more locations and faster, it’s uses cases are those limited to cities and homes with charging.
@onederment
@onederment 2 года назад
The car does have a level 1 charger so you can plug it into your house socket and charge it that way. Its slower but it works if you don't have to go somewhere fast.
@lapin46
@lapin46 2 года назад
a 100km one way commute in an extrem cold climate and no charge infrastructure at work is currently not the best use case for an EV. Once you would be able to charge with 3-11kW at work and at home, it’ll work with an efficient vehicle. But that likely won’t be SUV shaped.

I like the design outside but think the console is a big miss inside. I really enjoy my flat console in my Tesla for take out storage. The ID.4 is priced right and I'm envious of the better overall comfort but still pleased I purchased the Model 3 LR. Tesla has more responsive and matured software, superior battery tech with higher range, more power, huge charging network and my software has been updated several time this year. My norm is to plug in and do food shopping which is very, very convenient. Biggest surprise in going EV is range isn't the big deal I thought it would be. I often unplug at 200 miles just for convenience. I'm into my 12 month of ownership and would never go back to ICE. I wish VW success and hope they don't have issues with their batteries like the Chevy Bolt encountered. I'm just not a fan of pouch style battery packs.

In a new vw electric car there are 27 relays there are 0 in the other brands and old-fashioned IT system which goes down and obsolete battery technology and many other obsolete technologies which are not in other modern electric cars.

@@xijinpingpong4426 It was just an example of VW using old technology for new cars. there is also a bad control system which does not work and is very slow to use. 😳

It’s roughly about the same and you get a much bigger vehicle with Awd. . Less if you get the rwd. Doesn’t have the same tech as the Model 3 but still provides an excellent ride with pretty good utility.

In depth review is five thumbs 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿 The EGOLF shifter made it the best EV to drive The new ID.3 shifter they copied from the i3 is JUNK bring back the old shifter or bring back the EGolf. VW missed it on copying junk when there shifter was way way better than any Ev on the market

Better than any ICE vehicle, especially any GM. Nothing in this vid compares it to a Tesla M3 - AP, FSD (planned perhaps). Not impressed by his talk - button, VW sign lights up, one-pedal driving, .......... Yawn for me Dislike

Needs at least 300 miles of range. The controls on dashboard are idiotic. Where are these built? I probably wait before they have better range and faster charging. Till then a Tesla is better choice for sure.
@TheAdventureAuto

The interior on these are pretty bad. ID.4 fanboys talk about needing real buttons for everything then get so excited over the tailgate where you can wave your foot around to close it. Plus, Tesla's have controls for windows, turn signals, windshield wipers, lights, seat controls, gear selection, volume, radio stations, and voice command to change everything else. Buttons for every single control is so redundant. You can really tell when people complain due to ignorance.

The ID.4 is currently built in Germany, but they will be starting production in 2022 in Chattanooga, TN for North American ID.4's.

@@Demobot1 a base model Y has had the price bumped by 10k US this year, it now starts at $61k, with no US rebate, the ID.4 AWD Pro costs $44k before rebate, $36k after rebate, the two aren’t even close in price

Also go watch some good German people reviews of the ID3 and ID4. It's terrible what these owners need to put up with. You should not underestimate the German people.. they won't take crap for long.

The issue is that VW doesn't have the engineering to meet todays standards. They are stuck in the engineering of the past and are trying to stick an electric car into a gas car...it is just a patch job at best.
