Thank you for the overview on the 2023 Rise. My wife and I bought the Rise back in the early summer of 2021. What a fantastic bike! I still love riding my analog bikes, but the Rise is so much fun, it makes my face hurt from smiling so much. 🙂 At first the motor noise use to displease me a little because it sounded a little like chain slap, but I don't even notice it now.

I just ordered a 2022 Rise, with a good discount. Will be my 1st e bike. I was interested in the Rise because of the lighter weight, as I'm a small guy, and also getting older (64) have been looking at something like it for the past couple of years. The new version sounds great, but I expect it to be above my budget at the moment.

Rob has a great history of the evolution of e mtn bikes. Side question: why hasn't Giant come up iwth a mid range offering? I did 2500 mtn miles on a 2021 Giant Trance E +, and life is so good on a H30 2021. I work a bit harder on the ups, but the DH on the H30 is an eye opener.
@2wheelsonline

The main reason I sold my emtb back in 2019 was due to the excess weight and I'd got it down to 21.5kg. I've had an analogue mtb since (currently Cotic Bfe Max) and just love not straining my back getting it out of the back of my car. Love the idea behind the SL models but they are not what I'd call 'Superlight' yet. I might get another emtb when they get light enough or when I turn 70 in 10 years time 🤔
@flippy66
@flippy66 Год назад
They are down to about 18kg now (less if you spend big money). You should be fine lifting that. And a lot of models (not the Orbea) you can remove the battery, making it even lighter.
@2wheelsonline
@2wheelsonline Год назад
@@flippy66 18kg is still heavy for an MTB, assisted or not. I've got my Cotic Bfe Max down to 12.6kg but I could get it lighter.

I’m just waiting to see what else is coming in the SL category. They’re so bloody expensive. I love my full fat eMTB but anything below 20kg would be lovely. I’m hoping Merida might come to the market with something cheaper. The Transition looks like an interesting proposition as well. These Orbea certainly win on aesthetic…

Removing the motor and battery from the Rise is really simple. The only special tool you will need is the large socket to remove the front chainring to allow access to all the motor bolts.

I was concerned about the rattle. I will be VERY interested in your review on that once you've ridden it! I did stop by the Orbea dealer today. For anyone interested: A 2022, 360wh large M20 came in at a very respectable 18.7Kg without pedals and a medium 2022 H10 540wh was 20.7Kg without pedals. My understanding is that the 252wh range extender is 1.4Kg. I tried the drop test on both and there was no noise, but I guess they are known for a rattle!
@darcos7535
@darcos7535 Год назад
Strange: my dealer weighted the 2023 M10 size L at 19.5kg without pedals, but that was with the 200mm rotor up front and dissector (maxxterra) tyres on the rear. I'm not sure what was up front. It had the 360wh battery according to him. I heard this same value from another dealer that I was at, but this one actually weighted it for me. Now, the 2022 does feel light, but I can't imagine it being lighter than 2023.

I watched your previous video on the older model, which was great. I have the Obrea Rise 2023 Carbon, my rides are 20-30 max on a MTB.. I have the 360, just thinking of buying the range extender instead of buying the 540 and having them swapped out. On my old Haibike 2.0 I had the Yamaha motor which I did like as well, but it tended to have too much torque when you didn't need it, especially on a single track! ;)
@TeamCykelhold

It really needs the stiffer shock mount. The entire rear end on the gen 1 was extremely sloppy but few reviews talk about it. The rattlemaster 3000 was the reason I sold it though. I could live with the backend noodle but not the rattle. Looking forward to hear if the updates solve those issues.

Orbea claim on the rise info that; “Our 1.5x Factor means that thanks to lighter bikes, increased efficiency and greater reliance on your legs, battery life is extended by a factor of over 1.5. This means that our 540Wh battery is comparable to a 810Wh battery in a standard ebike system” Can that really be true? Can you do a real world test 540Wh V Spectral:ON 720Wh maybe?

Fantastic review as always Rob! I just demo'd and reviewed the Pivot Shuttle SL on my channel which is pretty much a copy of the OG Rise. But with the Fazua Ride 60 motor. After riding the Shuttle SL (at a mere $13k USD for the XTR 38 pound build), I can't say I really enjoyed the power and smoothness (or lack thereof) of the Fazua. It's a great trail bike (150 up front and 132 on back, based on the Pivot Trail 429 platform) and literally feels like riding a regular bike. But I MUCH prefer the power and smoothness of Rocky Mountain's own Dyname 4.0 motor. Super "natural" feel to it. Gotta say, I LOVE the look of that new Rise. The matte blue is stellar. Question - is the display now only those tiny LED's on the handlebar shifter that you showed? I'm hoping to demo one of the old (or new hopefully) Rise. Excited to compare it to the Shuttle SL. Thanks as always! 😄

I coul'd give you an answer to your question. Two weeks ago, during the bikes show "Velofollies" in Belgium, i asked the same question at de stand Shimano and they say that it won't be possible to upgrade the EP800 to EP801, nevertheless it will be possible to replace the actual EP800 by the EP801 but it will cost a lot - necessary to replace also the battery (not the same interne software used!), the control button (bluetooth) + the display (if there is a display). So very expensive!

You can’t swap the battery on the fly, but you can do it yourself at home.

I was interested to see if the geometry had been updated, sadly it appears not. I was interested in a discounted H30 as my first eBike but I'm a L for leg length and XL for reach but the XL doesn't work for me due to the very long seat tube, I'd be limited to a 120mm dropper instead of my usual 170mm. I guess I need to look elsewhere, looks great though.

Buy the L if it’s close, it’s more nimble. Orbeas are more upright than many others.

I'd want to save at least 7kg to drop in my power I think. 15kg is mental.

Give me the led box any day over the integrated internal handle bar cabel routing! That s@#t sucks. Hate all these companies going to headset/handlebar routing! Don't need it, don't want it! Glad I have the 1st gen!

Love the channel mate, but you didn't mention if Shimano have improved reliability with their motor. The Shimano EP8 has got to be one of the worst electric motors ever designed, no aftermarket parts available, only a 2 year warranty from the original purchase date which means if you are waiting for a replacement motor as you inevitably will, the warranty just runs away from you. I would never buy a Shimano equipped ebike again, ever! Even their brakes have went down the pan since 2020. You can't even sell a Shimano equipped ebike that is a year old due to the risk of failure. I would personally like to see a 4 year warranty that is transferable to a new owner. Sorry, not a rant but every one of my mates with the EP8 or EP8RS motor has had to have theirs replaced, some with only 100 miles on them. Mine got to 600 miles. Personally, I know you are doing a quick review and it's not an Orbea issue but surely a mention of this must be made to warn people of their potential financial loss?

Prices of bikes are getting out of hand. This, fuel EXe, Turbo Levo, Lumen etc. are all great... but damn, so much moolah. Also, the non-removable battery sucks a little :(
