Nice. How long does it take to recharge the battery on a 12 volt solar system? I'm guessing you can purchase spare batteries to have backups?

That’s something you can work out east enough. Take the batter size in watts and then figure out how many watts your solar system provides at the battery. Any other way would give a completely unusable answer!

Temo states on its website that charging with 12v will take 12½ hours.

Yeah, for sure but that’s from a 12v battery that’s charged up. If you want to charge it directly from a panel you need to know the wattage the panel produces after it’s been through it’s charge controller etc. If you did want to do it via a panel alone the fastest the Temo charger would allow would be the 12 1/2 hrs and obviously we need to think about daylight hours etc. donuts a slow process but certainly possible. There are other chargers out there you could use which could do it quicker but warranty would be an issue.

The industry for electric motors on boats is starting to expand rapidly. I like this design. Many good features not even conceived by other manufacturers. The "rudder" making use of the space for the battery and turning. Nice.

@jepomer cool! The channel is changing a bit soon as we it’s hard to make the boat shows financially sensible! But one things for sure, my love for new tech keeps us on the ball and we’ve got loads of gear to be testing too!

I like what Temo are doing. Most electric outboards seem to want to looklike petrol outboards. That might not be optimum use of the technology.

They seem really good, we were super excited to finally get a go of this UK pre production UK and it was worth the wait! Super innovative company, can’t wait to get a proper test on one!

A very interesting product and moving in its own direction design wise makes it a unique and in my opinion a better direction than others on the market. I really love the adjustable shaft depth which not only makes it more interchangeable with different craft but good for very shallow dinghy jaunts in hard to reach creeks and rivers. Takes away having to put the outboard on tilt and spew water up in the air rather than nicely pushing you along still. Only draw back at this stage would be the rather limited battery charge time but I guess that with time will only get better.

We totally agree, it has some really nice features stepping it apart. With regards to the battery, it may not be optimal in terms of range but we do like the fact that due to the battery shape, you can keep a spare one onboard relatively easily 👍🏼

Way to go for the future. Powerful enough for a 1.5 Ton boat is very useful. Now if it could only be used to generate electricity when sailing, that would be the icing on the cake! Perhaps by changing the prop to a more efficient generator profile could make more charge? SkipRay, “The ARK project”, Kerry, Ireland.

Hey Kerry, I believe you can hydrogenerate with it but I’m not sure what the figures are - ePropulsion have some figures around for a 1kw motor but it’s not really that exciting. Like you say… the prop would be the first place to look for improvement!

Yeah! These lithium outboards are getting out of hand! Mind you, it seems the price of well made electric outboards in general. The remigo is probably the best made one out there and that comes at a price too!

This would make great sense! I know it can be Solar charged, so I would imagine so, but I must be honest I will need to find out for you to be sure.

@SailHub Thank you. That would be great info. If a panel could be mounted to one's dinghy instead of having to charge the battery from your boats supply. That would make sense to me and possibly tip me in the direction of a purchase.

Sorry it took a while to get back to you, Annapolis boat show has been on. The answer is yes, you can solar charge form the dinghy.

@SailHub That's good news indeed. Thank you for following that up for us all. Thinking a bit further, I got to wondering if a device like this which looks , from the outside, very similar to a Seawatt unit that can be fixed to the stern of one's yacht. And used to make onboard electricity. Wouldn't it be fantastic if they where combined into the same machine. One unit that can be used to propeller your dinghy as a motor, and be towed behind ones yacht to make electricity. That would be an excellent marketing advantage. No need to bring the unit onboard. Straight from the back of the dinghy to the back of the yacht. Easy!

Hey, thanks for getting involved, some good point there! The digital lock has been done already! Surprising it’s not become the norm yet! I believe the EPropulsion Navy units have it. External pack is interesting…. Someone else mentioned as well. I could see it being a good idea too, however It’s so easy to swap the battery out that I think I would opt for an easy to carry option on such a small motor. Still, the option would be nice 👌 👍

Right… I would just put some new cells inside personally. What exactly do you want anyhow? It seems your complaining because you can’t have a portable outboard with an integrated standardised battery. Unfortunately they don’t exist, although they are available as separates, which is what this is if you connect via the solar port. So forgive me for being lost…

They just got Series A funding ($6.5M) so we should see some larger motors soon. Personally I think they should follow the direction of e-bikes and consider a 3rd party battery for larger models. There are a number of them that would fit the bigger foil you’d likely need for a bigger motor.

Thanks Peter, we’re at Dusseldorf now, it’s been great to catch up with the Temo team here! 3rd party batteries is a fantastic idea and we would love to see it too, as spoken by Torqeedo earlier this week - 3rd party battery approval is unlikely to be popular as quality control and safety become a risk to the motor company.

@@SailHub I wasn’t paying that much attention at the start of the year bike revolution, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the bike companies were saying the same thing. The reality is, though, a proprietary battery is always going to be more expensive than a mass produced one, and a mass produced battery that’s being shipped in high-end bikes, like Cannondale, specialized, trek is going to be pretty darned reliable. It’s a classic case of innovators dilemma, it’s not what you want to do, but it’s exactly what you’re competitors are going to do. it’s going to be very easy for another company to release an outboaed “influenced” by their design with a drop in OEM battery at a price that isn’t trying to recoup the R&D costs.

@peterjmcgowan hey Peter, you hit thy nail right on the head and there is no shortage of examples like this at BOOT this year! As for the bike industry, sure the batteries are fairly reliable these days, it took a while mind! Unfortunately and as you will be aware, boats draw an awful lot of power and they are not a large market so R&D costs are high, we take on a lot from the automotive world which helps but I think it will be a while until 3rd party batteries are common practice - maybe when solid state becomes more common we will see a change 🤞

So how do you stop someone stealing the battery pack? Or do you have to lug 7kg around town in 30 degree plus heat??

Well, they could steal it but it’s paired to the motor so it would not work. We may find they have added a lock to it now too. This was an early prototype model, in fact it turns out that the official sales launch is still to come - Temo are very thorough with their products, I can assure that!

Looks a bit like chinese development. Remigo one started 4 years ago. And also very smart features. Price and range wise a better option.

It’s all French to be fair. But ePropulsion recently popped out a Chinese version at a ridiculously low price recently. Remigo we’re the originals in this style and they are also unbelievably robust! We would like to get our hands on them all at some points for a proper testing session.

By chinese development i mean they just used the remigo as a model. It is not their disign. On the website they pretent (like chinese) they put a lot of effort in developing the shape. No way! They have other, little, nice features. My money is going to Remigo one. And now waiting for the one that can regenerate energy from the prop when not in use (like E propulsion has)

For sure, we know the guys at Remingo, as I said before they were the originals. We’ve got an overview of a Remigo coming up and hopefully a full test this summer. As for the ePropulsion regen… it’s advertised as it’s a selling point but as far as we have been told it’s not worth the hassle. They are certainly working on improving it but a long way off the likes of a watt and sea or a remoran generator.

@@SailHub for example, the eLite with 1000w like the spirit, for ± €1500 would be fantastic. The sweet point is using them at 500W, it saves battery, has a good range and a pleasant speed.

All these e-outboards are well overpriced. And they should be made to quote real hp eg. 1.3hp, not the 3hp they lie about. And battery life should be measured at full speed, otherwise we might as well go out and buy a tiny trolling motor.

$3,200. Can't order outside of France. No useful specs (Voltage, aH rating, etc.) on website. No battery options other than their own OEM which is no doubt over priced by a lot. It's a neat design in terms of appearance, but I'm not sure where the innovation is here. True innovation for marine electric motors would be lower costs (not lowest, just lower) so that these could compete successfully against ICE motors. Get a true 10hp equivalent (7500W) compact outboard under $2K, and you'll take over that market within a year.
