New 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports - First Ride Review

The 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports has had a makeover for this model year. The 21 inch front wheel has been replaced with a more road inspired 19 inch one. The suspension travel, ground clearance and importantly, seat height have all been slightly reduced. The fairing has had a sculpture and the Honda engineers have been tinkering to bring more mid-range power and torque as well as a slicker DCT experience. I was at the recent launch in Portugal and here's my first impressions ride review both on-road and off-road. Theres clear difference between the Africa Twin CRF1100L and the Adventure Sports now, was this a good move from Honda?

Makes me LOL when the haters say it isn't powerful enough. What nonsense, 100 horsepower not enough? Seriously? Despite me initially being against the change to a smaller diameter front wheel the reality in the real world is that unless you genuinely spend 95% of your time off road you really don't need a 21 inch front wheel - the positives on the road way outweigh any negatives. I am 99% on road (I have a 2016 non AS AT) and should I manage to convince myself to get rid of it this 19 incher AS manual with a quickshifter would be my no 1 choice. Really well made review as well, BTW 👍

I am one of the ones miffed at the 19” front. I have a 2019 ATAS. I have been looking forward to upgrading to the 1100 with cruise control. I wish I did more time in the dirt, and again I wish that most of the dirt was so technical that the 21” in front gave me an advantage. But alas it’s not so. Even so, I do some technical stuff and am glad that my big bike is more capable than the GS in those conditions. The 21” front is the only thing that makes the Honda better than the big BMW. So if I get a new AT, I’ll get the no AS. And be a little more fuel insecure than I am now, I won’t have the extra range.

A great review Tony. What a lovely location for the test. I had never considered the AT as I thought it was too tall. You are the same dimensions as me so it will fit. 100bhp is plenty. I went from a 1200 mutistrada to a 950 and never missed the power. I will consider the Africa Twin when I come to change.

Had the 21´standard with DCT and it was brilliant, appart from it being too high and the 21´´ front wheel making it feel ´´boring´´in the corners. Was thinking back then a 19´´ front and lowered body would be perfect, and here we are! Definitely trying it out. Did not enjoy DCS in auto mode but in semi auto it is fantastic.

I agree that making more of a differentiation between the models is a smart move from Honda. Added to the fact that the Standard model now has way more options available so you can retain the 'off road' performance of the current models, but spec it up to suit yourself.

I'm looking at getting back into biking after some 15 years. My last bike was a ratty XTZ750 which was (as you can imagine) like a hippo with a zimmer frame. I recently rode a short distance on a friend's '22 AT and I still have the grin on my face after several days! The thing felt like a magic carpet. 100 hp is as much as you could ever hope to use on virtually any road around the world unless you're intent on regular track riding or 100+ mph autobahn stints. This new AT would suit my plans for a forthcoming European jaunt with some friends. I'd get a manual box rather than the £1.4k DCT and spend the money on accessories and/or travel expenses. I'll be booking a visit to my nearest Honda dealer soon. *Very informative matter-of-fact review.*

Fantastic review Tony, I currently own a 2022 Yamaha Tracer 9GT and last year i had the unpleasant experience that someone decided to reverse into my parked bike so while it was with the insurance repairers i had the opportunity to ride the 2023 Africa Twin with the 21" front wheel and it was a pleasure to ride, the only thing that put me off as a 5'7" tall it was the height of the bike also i found the throttle to be a bit snatchy to my taste. But seeing this new 2024 AT with 19" front wheel and lower seat also DCT for the smoother throttle , i'm already sold on it. Cannot wait to ride one . Keep the great work coming!

The low seat height is such a good idea with that much weight for a shorter (5'9") like me, and others. Love the bike but forr my riding too big and heavy, and expensive. As an Africa Twin fan myself I really appreciate that finally it comes out of the factory with a 19 inch front! It would be amazing if we see some day the standard AT with a 19 inch or some of the middle weigh adventure segment (like the TransAlp) but I doubt it will ever happen. After all almost 20 kilos difference would accommodate the needed protection and minimalist luggage as well. Wonderful review as always, Tony! The roads and views were magnificent as well...I guess Spain or Portugal?

I really enjoyed that review Tony. I tried it last week at my dealer and own a 2021 ATAS DCT and I fully agree with your conclusions. Personally I found that the engine felt different past 4000rpm only and I didn’t particularly appreciate the louder intake and exhaust noise. I’ll keep my 2021 though but it’s purely for personal reasons. Also, I fitted her with Continental TA3s and it made her much more flickable and confidence inspiring in the front. How about a video where you ride yours and this one back to back with similar tires brand and model for a more in-depth comparison? The weight is going back up too. The 2018 was 253kg as well.

Thanks Arnaud, yes I don't see a reason to switch unless you are unhappy with the older model. Tyres can make a massive difference. I'm hoping to get one for a couple of weeks to make a deeper comparison, but its unlikely i'd be able to match the tyres.

Sweeeeeet! I love this review. I'm a hair shorter than you, and I will certainly appreciate the seating on this one (perhaps still with the lower seat). I need to get the proper feel of the machine, and perhaps even compare it to a 2023 with a 21 inch front wheel. I still see room for improvements: They should be able to lower the weight while maintaining good handling, stiffness etc, more Oumpfh! can be crammed out of the engine without any other downsides. An even more efficient engine + gearbox combo (still thinking DCT) should be totally within reach. Extremely high on my "Want!" list is backlit buttons and a bloody radar!! Also some of things that you have to pay extra for they should be able to include from the start. Today I think that they know way too well what people need/want and are prepared to pay extra for. If they were a slight bit more customer oriented they would include it from the start in the base package, and they would get even happier customers. (They would still make sh*tloads of money off of the Africa Twin.)

I am more convinced now of getting one , probably in 2025. I want a reliable bike & DCT is a step up. Most important I don’t want to baby the bike like my Diavel , Busa & GS previously. One bike , it will be left in the sun & rain, but I will never compromise on its maintenance. It’s almost 60k here in Singapore but a bargain compared to the 88k Gs 1300.

I had the 2016..great bike! If I'm ever in the market for one again, lack of adaptive CC would be a deal breaker. I have CC on my Tracer 9GT, and while it's a good temporary rest for you wrists and better than a throttle lock, drivers on freeways and expressways can't maintain a constant speed to save their ass. Just my luck that the 9GT+ came out with adaptive CC the year after I purchased my GT. 😝Didn't see that one coming.

I like the NT1100 a lot, but for me it’s a 100% tarmac bike. The AT offers a bit more room for a pillion, but the real benefit would be the electronic suspension. Setting the preload at the touch of a button beats messing around with c spanners!

Good job 👍🏻, honda have finally admitted that the ATAS is predominantly used on the road as a tourer (by those who like the look of adventure style bikes) and fitted a 19” front wheel with a wider tyre and more planted feel. Purist will bemoan the 19” wheels disadvantage offroad whereas the majority of ATAS riders don’t ride offroad hardly if ever and will appreciate the advantages on the road (just like the tubeless wheels 👍🏻). And to all those bemoaning the 19”er, buy the standard AT.

i agree 100% with you here, and with honda for the change. you only loose the benefit of the 21" on fast riding sand, and rocky terrain, but if people are on those terrains with the ATAS, the main problem will be the weight and size, not the wheel. this new ATAS is way more approachable and honest with is purpose

With 55 years street and trail riding, and with 14 and 16 years riding the same bikes I would like to buy a new Touring Dual Sport bike but, the One feature that I would really like to see, for some reason the Honda, BMW, or Yamaha engineers don't seem to understand that it's really needed on big Dual Sport bikes, a Reverse Gear. We don't need is more electronics, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring what we need is a Reverse Gear. Can somebody explain to that to the engineers how hard it push your 450 plus pound bikes around when your solo riding and you get crossed up in some deep ruts or buried in a mud water crossing.

I'm wondering how this compares to the Yamaha Super Tenere. I can get one for $5,000 less here in the U.S. and I'm not riding off road. I'm looking at something to do more touring and highway riding.

Does the bike automatically lower (or get softer) at stops with the new suspension?

The suspension softens, so you get a little more sag, but it doesn’t ‘lower’ as such

The Africa Twin is almost certainly the best looking Adventure Bike on the market today (KTM should take note) and the Adventure Sport in the RWB colour scheme with the gold rims looks really good and is the one I'd buy, the only negative is from what I understand we will only be able to buy a DCT gearbox equipped bike in the UK which would rule it out as replacement for my current Multistrada Enduro.

Only things that puts me off are the electronic suspension, I'd prefer the cheaper regular suspension. I also think the twin screen TFT+LCD display is now very out of date and needs updating to a single display. Having the speed showing in two places at once is very odd, especially as they don't update at the same time.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 5 месяцев назад
Fair enough, but I think the ES is very good. The whole point of having the second display is so that you can use the whole TFT for navigation for example, and still have a speed displayed.

@@mancavemoto I appreciate that re the display, but there are plenty of existing display options to include selectable vital info in the corner(s) of the screen when in Nav mode. As a very happy owner of an AT DCT I’ve been waiting for a 19” version; I go off tarmac a lot but rarely do off road or single track riding. However, I’ll not buy one until Honda offers it without the busy graphics and with adaptive cruise control and possibly a blind spot monitor. Why these features aren’t offered, at least as options, is baffling.

Yep, something you have to expect with the Africa Twin. I love the dct, but it adds almost 10kg to the weight, albeit low down.
