Etihad Airways wants to double its fleet, double its route network, and massively increase the number of destinations it serves. However, this move comes only a matter of years after its previous expansion attempts, which left it with losses in the billions. Will the airline be able to secure its long-term future?

I hope to see Etihad come back to Brisbane, Los Angeles, Dallas and start Houston Service!

I hope that Etihad makes better decisions in this time of growth. Forever elegant, not decadent. Etihad…

I guess the question with Etihad is whether they'll ever join an alliance. They already have agreements with a number of both Skyteam and Star airlines. It seems alliances have become second choice after joint ventures, so it may suit Etihad to stay as they are.

So I agree with a whole bunch of what you say but disagree with other parts. Fundamentally Etihad was doing ok in itself, where it massively went wrong was with the purchases of Alitalia and Air Berlin, they shipped some of their best managers over to these, but because they didn’t have of 50% control of the airlines were very much restricted. The model for air Berlin was always wrong and left a very confusing offering to the public, they were a low cost airline on some route, a charter airline on other and a full service again on others. All three were potentially viable but not as a whole. Alitalia was just a car crash, it had been badly run for decades, the management were incompetent and the unions were way too strong and more concerned about keeping power than the future of the airline. Both these two pulled down Etihad and the new management panic and destroyed Etihad in trying to make up for the loses of the other two. Now, I think Etihad is on the right track if not enough focused toward the USA and more provincial parts of Europe. The other thing I believe it gets wrong is the whole point of Etihad is to bring trade into Abu Dhabi. Why is it cheaper to fly to India and then get a ticket from there to Europe than to just buy a ticket in Abu Dhabi! The carrier should be more based as you said to bring traffic to AUH than just to be a stopping place on the road to somewhere else. I know generally the people in Abu Dhabi can afford higher fares, but that isn’t the point. The point is to get business into Abu Dhabi because it is a hub and economic to do business, not a very expensive place to travel to.

Given that emirates will move from DXB to DWC, so much closer to Abu Dhabi, and given that Ethiad flights are for some reason always more expensive than emirates for the same destination, at least starting the journey in UAE, now Ethiad will face more serious competition. DWC is only 30 extra drive time from Abu Dhabi airport and the road between is usually quite congestion free. Where instead to go to DXB from Abu Dhabi you have to cross the entire city of Dubai, extra 50 km compared to DWC that can take quite long in peak times.

Being the carrier of the capital of the UAE, Etihad airways is the one to lead in the near future. Along with Emirates and Qatar, of course.

After years of back to back billion dollar losses, Etihad is only in existence due to government subsidies. They tried to model after Qatar and Emirates, but the service was not the same, the cost to fly out of Abu Dhabi was significantly higher, the wasted money on the A380, built a new terminal that was way too costly and will never get close to capacity, etc. My colleagues and I would drive to DXB and fly in and out of there rather than with Etihad. Oh, and those awful dark brown uniforms was the deal breaker for me:)

I'm a long term Etihad frequent flyer and definitely noticed the cutbacks in FF perks in the second half of the 2010's. Despite c0vid, this has thankfully started improving in recent times. I'm now feeling optimistic for the future, especially with the amazing new AUH terminal. The new Etihad Business Class Lounge is also a massive plus.

Etihad has always been a bit of a basket case on the ownership/management side of things. It was run more like a play thing than a serious business, the investment in the perennially bankrupt Alitalia being a good example. Nothing at all wrong with the service side of things and most seemed to rate them highly, even though they have stiff competition in the region from the superb Qatar Airways and the very good Emirates. Therein lies their major problem - three major airlines from such a relatively small area doing pretty much the same thing, spoking out of their respective hubs. Is that a sustainable strategy for all three of them?
