I saw in B and M something called tinned beef in a corned beef shaped tin it was 50p cheaper ,never bought it but wondered what it was 🤣hooves and tails maybe
I totally agree, I remember an estate in Leeds called Gipton, and we used to call it cornbeef Islan. Now it sounds posh calling it that, funny how it backfired 😂😂😂
@@beavisbonce Mince is still economical, because its form makes it easy to adulterate. You can cut it 50/50 with finely chopped vegetables or lentils. Zucchinis works amazingly well, because it takes on the flavour of whatever you cook it with.
I live in New Zealand and we are encouraged to keep a civil defence stock in a safe place. Water, matches candles, toilet paper! and tinned food for up to 3 days. Family laughed at me for doing it. Then we were hit by a massive earthquake. No water, no power no shops for 3 days . They weren’t laughing then. I found having Spam in my stock was great. Bought some the other day took me back 12 years as soon as I tasted it. Thanks for the video.
I always feel bad for the people who laugh at any kind of 'prepping'. They seem to believe nothing bad can ever happen to them. You'd think given the pandemic and subsequent supply chain problems, they'd realise that shit can actually happen. But no ... they're still convinced they'll always have everything they need, right outside their door, and all at affordable prices. It's the most bizarre thinking!
@@kjodleken8810 nothing paranoid in being prepared in a place called the “shaky isles”. Nor now it would seem with the amount of flooding happening in the UK too. Talking paranoia instead of sensible preparation makes people feel embarrassed and neglect what can save lives. When an emergency hits you are absolutely on your own, no phone, no access to help, it’s surreal. Get prepared it can’t hurt.
Depending on your area I urge everyone to visit a Polish shop. There are so many varieties of canned Pork and Ham, You're sure to find a brand you like. According to my butcher friend, Pork is up around 20-25% over previous years so Spam and similar products are taking advantage to rip us off.
I agree, we are lucky to have a couple of large Polish supermarkets with Deli's, cooked meats are more varied, superior and cheaper than the usual supermarkets.
PEK and Krakus are my go to Polish alternatives, cheaper and tastier and PEK in particular is readily available and often discounted. Farmfoods leaflet this week has side by side 2x200g Spam £6.50 or 2x400g PEK £3.00! My last 400g PEK was £1.75 from Heron Foods a few weeks ago
@@robertsmelt6638 stocked up last year when they were that price but like everything the price has shot up since. Best Ive seen recently is farmfoods leaflet this week, 2x400g £3. In the same leaflet next to the PEK they are offering 2x200g Spam for £6.50!
I absolutely agree with this. I have a Polish grocers locally and they have a large selection of sliced meat, like Tesco used to do until they closed the delicatessen counter in smaller stores. Our Polish grocer also sells cooked pork knuckles and cooked ready-to-eat chicken drumsticks, plus loads of soups you don't see in British supermarkets.
Grilled spam and cheese in a sandwich maker used to be great. Haven't had it for years. Used to love spam but the expense put me off. Tried some cheaper versions and frankly couldn't tell the difference. Spam and beans and chips. But still expensive for the amount but I do miss it.......I tried the cheaper tomato ketchup from ASDA the other day and it is so much cheaper than Heinz and again. Taste was great. Love these comparisons and it proves how the best known food manufacturers live off their name more than their taste.
I'm glad they brought this back! They had it as well as their own bacon grill about 5 years ago but they discontinued it. It used to be in bigger 340g tins
Gareth, DK 65 EF is code for Tulip Foods, who are the processed Meat division of Danish Crown (the larges pork and pork products producer in Europe). They will provide the raw material and processing for a number of brands. Hormel who own the Spam brand & Aldi use them to produce their product.
@@richardwells1709 crazy they dont selli it in Denmark ..i know , i live in DK ... they export all the best (back) bacon too ... sell fatty streaky bacon here :(
My old mum made spam fritters when I was kid. She told me that during WWII, and for some time after, spam was a luxury item for the working class. I remember that after a while, she moved over to Plumrose chopped ham with pork, which I loved. When I was squaddie, we had bacon roll in our ration packs - a good substitute for both. I must say Garry, in the comparison today, they both looked good enough to eat.
The price of Spam is now obscene To think that in the 60's it was very popular due to it's low price, that's inflation gone mad. I must try the Aldi one, i can't stand too much salt.
You can freeze spam or any canned meats Gareth. Just slice and freeze separately, then bag them up or just freeze in blocks so you are not eating it all week. Thanks for the video, good to know 👍
Brings back memories of Barbel fishing on the River Severn. Never failed. Stays on the hook, no stinky maggots and you could eat what was left. What’s not to like? Tastes ok as well.
Yes, it 'bulks' up the slice, thus doubling up the size and making it go even further! Add some chilli flakes, a few dashes of hot sauce or perhaps a favourite dried herb (I.e. rosemary) into the batter too...
@@tallshort1849 For 'simple' batter' - You usually add some 'liquid' too... Either water, but milk is better. So add milk to the flour, to make a paste, then add eggs before coating the food to be fried in hot oil (shallow or deep). Dead easy, the most important point is to stir/mix well to avoid 'flour lumps'. EDIT: I forgot to mention, here in the UK, we often add BEER as the liquid when battering fish for 'Fish & Chips', so really any liquid can be used!
Hi Gareth from Spain. I have only eaten Spam once and that was in the form of a fritter courtesy of the US Airforce and it was YUK. At least the Aldi one had traffic lights whereas the Spam one didn't appear to. We could have had more discussion on the hazards of eating them.
Brilliant comparison as always, Gareth. Spam has loads of extra salt, but to be fair, those who choose spam are usually the ones who like extra salt. Since I've lived in the USA for quite some time in the past, there are different ways of cooking this world class delicacy. One thing that is different... Some places in the USA will cook spam until it is literally crunchy. It's similar to the way people cook streaky bacon in the USA. Cook it until it's crunchy with no pink inside at all. THAT is the way to enjoy spam. Once you try it that way, you'll always cook it until crunchy. Try it.. cook it until it is crunchy all the way through... I will wager you will love it that way as I do.
When I was a kid, ( many many years ago ), I used to love SPAM fritters. It also went well on salads, or fried with chips and a fried egg. The Aldi one for me is better for 2 reasons. One, it works out cheaper and two it has far less salt. As for the meat ingredients? They are the same basically. Tinned meat prices are certainly on the rise, so a saving of 32p per 100g is quite a saving over time. I do agree with the person who suggested buying from a Polish shop, ( I think you did a comparison on them before? ). I used to love the COMPO tins of chopped pork. Another great review Gareth 👍🏻. Showing where to save a few bob and still get a decent product is brilliant.
Spam has gotten shockingly expensive. When I was growing up it was the 'go to' whe n we got to the end of the week when things got tight. We used it instead of bacon or gammon.
Aah, those metal cans, the fun you used to have back in the 1980s with the little key thing they used to give you to open the can. Razor sharp tin slicing open your finger. Aah those were the days. Lol. Keep up the spot on work. Best wishes from Scotland.
Bramwell's range is normally pretty fare and more than often far better value. The gel will give a yellow tinge. I stab a hole in the tin base to let air in it aids getting stuff out of tins. a bit salty and fatty for me now but the boys eat it regular they will be trying the new one. I have to save my fat and salt allowance for my bacon or kippers :))). I didn't think there would be much to choose between them except the price .
Thanks, I don't buy a lot of chopped pork and ham. It's mainly just to keep in the cupboard if I can't think of anything else to eat. I only buy Spam when it's on offer but even then it's dearer that Aldi. I'll definitely give the Aldi one a try.
Remembering Spam fritters from school, I tried the genuine Spam fritters a couple of years ago. They were way too salty. I don't remember Spam fritters at school being THAT salty. I didn't like them so much that I never revisited them. Anyway, my current girlfriend has recently mentioned school Spam fritters and her desire to have them again, probably having seen them mentioned on one of these FB nostalgia groups. I told her of my experience and thought I would leave it there. However, based on your review, I think I will go and get some Aldi look-alike, batter it up and give it a go. See if I can get some brownie points 😄
The main difference between ham and pork comes from the fact that all ham is pork, but not all pork is ham. Ham is a specific cut of the pork meat from the pig's thighs. It's usually cured and salted.
@@bigt9374 Ham is pork from a leg cut that has been preserved by wet or dry curing, with or without smoking. As a processed meat, the term "ham" includes both whole cuts of meat and ones that have been mechanically formed.(all from the thigh)
Americans call a lot of raw pork products 'ham' even before they have been cured or cooked. In England, it is still gammon, knuckle, leg even when cured, as you say wet or dry but only after cooking and it ready to eat can it be called ham. @@jamielee9350
I side with atomic shrimp I dislike the lip left behind on the tin, which makes it harder remove from the can it's better to use a can opener if you can find a good opener to used on these oblong cans
A lot of people turn their noses up at Spam or any of the other canned meats. I say everything in moderation. I love Crispy Spam Egg n Bean sarnies or in a meal especially when camping. As I was growing up mum used to occasionally put Chapped Ham n Pork sarnies up if we were going out on a picnic. Bring it on is what I say.
Obviously made in the same place and even the same kind of tin with a different label. I wouldn't describe spam as high cuisine but it is a handy product to have in the cupboard and it's pretty tasty.
I dont mind Spam but its always been overpriced and there are better and cheaper alternatives out there. PEK has always been my long term alternative preference on taste and value and its often on offer in major supermarkets and the likes of Herons, Home Bargains, Farm Foods etc. Got a Farmfoods offer leaflet this week and they have Spam 2x200g for £6.50 or PEK 2x400g for just £3. Quarter of the price its PEK all the way
Use to have alot of spam as a kid, mum would cut the block into slices, bread them then shallow fry in lard. We have not bought spam for decades as we always bought the cheaper stuff as there was sod all differance once it was cooked or in a sandwich bar the price. Better to buy the own label versions and season them yourself. Always good to have a good stock of canned goods in the pantry especially with all the stupidity going on at home and around the world. Thanks for the video, Take care, God bless one and all. Edit: look up korean army stew a great winter warmer.
Good afternoon Gareth & family! I have never tried frying spam, at 65 years young, I should have sampled this by now. Thank you for extending my culinary knowledge yet further. VBW x
Thanks Gareth! I've ordered SPAM and Asda's own on my next supermarket delivery and will slavishly follow your demonstration, AND make up a sarnie alsoaswellastoo!. Thank you and VBW x
I've tried both for fishing and the carp prefer the proper spam, they also prefer hovis toastie bread over the cheap stuff, it's not just us lot who are fussy 😂
If ever its difficult to slide out, just drop the tin into some boiled water for a couple of seconds, slides out a dream then:) We used to call it by its nickname; “PINK LINT” I do think your taking the ‘Cross contamination’ a bit too extreme 😊
If you puncture the bottom of the can a couple of times it releases the suction of the meat and it normally just slips out, love a bit of spam,so versatile fried or not and in a fritter,I'm going to have to go out tomorrow and buy a can of that Bramwells pork and ham and try it in the air fryer, looks so tasty, another good video big pal
I instantly pressed Watch, when I saw this one 👌🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Does anybody remember the tinned meat in Aldi, years ago ? It wasn’t around much and disappeared off the shelves more than ten years ago now I think. Totally grateful to see this one and always appreciate what you do
Helloooo. When I use spam I grate it on the larger holes add a bit of chopped onion and put it in puff pastry. Cut them as you would if making sausage rolls and bake. Tasty hot or cold.
@@wildwolf2567 that might well knock my sister’s cheating sausage rolls made from herby sausages and Jusroll puff pastry, off the top spot👍. All her posh friends think she has a secret recipe.😂
Another cracking review. My take is that Bramwells is marginally healthier with less fat, carbs and salt. At £1.35 for 200g it's a no brainer. Spam 200g is currently £2.60 in Tesco and £3.25 at Sainsbury's
It's also on offer in B&M for twin pack at £3.49 or £1.74 and half pence 200g each 👍👌 still expensive will be getting Aldi's Bramwells in future at that price it's probably made in the same processing factory with different print outs for different brands as with most same products are 😉👍
I use the Plumrose version for 'fake away' night cut into a square and fried to put onto a hamburger instead of a meat pattie. I've used the Aldi version as well - nothing wrong with it. Great comparison.
For spam to be £10 per kg, is absolutely scandalous. Given that pork loin isn't even priced that high, what on earth are they thinking? It's interesting that the Aldi product has less calories and less fat.
Nice video. I am Dutch so we have this too but the cans from Easten Germany were very tasty too, during those days. We ate it when we were there, visiting family. They had a sort of gelly on top, inside the can. I did not see that gelly on your spam. You can chop it in mini squares and mix it in the macaroni saus/salat.
omg! the last time I tasted that stuff was about 55 years ago was so salty as a kid! The alternative back then was Plumrose Chopped ham with Pork! I think it was in a round tin too
When I was little, mom used to fry spam for our supper. We had it with mash potato & peas or beans. It was delicious. Not sure if I’d like it now, going to have to try it again some 50yrs later…..
I use diced spam for the kids special fried rice, which is the diced ham and scrambled eggs with plain white rice added along with peas, sweetcorn and carrots with soya sauce and oyster sauce added in the wok. They love it quick and easy to make
I had some Spam recently for the first time in years. Smells disgusting when frying it but tastes good. I don't think my heart would appreciate me eating it regularly.
All the things you can have in a sandwich Spam Ham Chicken Beef Pork Chips Corned beef Mash Sausages Tuna Salmon Cheese Tuna Banana Crisps Jam Lemon curd Nuttella Sardines
keep plenty of these tins in your cupboards, if the leccy goes out over winter, these will help keep your body warm even if eaten straight out of the tin
I refuse to buy the tinned meats now. I buy a gammon. We have ham egg, homemade chips and eggs when it is cooked (with a honey and mustard glaze i brush over! LOVELY JUBBILY) Then i have proper ham sandwiches for two days for my packed lunch and then we get a couple ham salads out of it as well. All for a 1.5kg gammon joint costing about £12. And the flavour is superb and juicy. As a previous poster has commented, i note the 'tv chefs' making the cheaper cuts 'in fashion' then peasants like myself get rinsed. Despite knowing for years they have the best flavour if cooked properly. Almost as if the meat marketing board finance these shows to get the cheaper cuts more popular this pushing the price up and then this means if these cuts weren't so popular then tinned meats would be cheaper! Go figure. Really enjoy your videos.
It's 32.5 p cheaper per 100 grams not overall, it's a shame you do not have a Lidl near you, both equally as good in my opinion. Keep up the great vids mate
It's not really reflective anyway as a bigger tin will always work out cheaper. It's about £1.30 per 100g or more for a 200g tin of Spam at most supermarkets so it's easier to just say that the Aldi one is about half the price (or 68p per 100g). I don't think anyone but a proper Spam addict buys the big tins, but even then it's clear you're not getting as good value even by buying the larger pack
Hello Gareth 👋 the price of Spam is getting worse every tin meat seems to have gone through the roof with the prices . Hope you and your family are keeping well sending you all love and prayers 🙏 God bless you all.
You can give the can squeeze from the short sides, and it causes the vacuum to break. You will hear a distinct when it happens. Didn't occur to me that my mother taught me a life lesson back in the 60's. Stopped eating meats/dairy years ago, but still love to watch cooking shows.
Grew up on Spam fried. as is spam fritter also cut in chunks 2cups of rice chicken oxo 2cups of water and bake in the oven last half hour cook uncovered. Add veg cheese topping. Onion at the beginning if liked. Cooked that cis I had nothing else in and sounds crap but was tasty great show Gareth
I've not seen Chopped Pork & Ham in Lancaster Aldi, but there again, you don't often see Brown Sauce or Red Cabbage either! Why anybody shops anywhere more expensive than Aldi, is a mystery to me? ... Even your posh nobs shop at Aldi, and THAT is how they stay rich! 🤣 "Cross contamination?" ... Bloody hell Gareth, you're reviewing a tin of Spam, not performing brain surgery! 🤣
I bought a tin of spam last month and it cost me €5.40! I love spam ad got it as a treat because of the price. Never again. I can buy a large chicken for less to feed the family and then some. 👍
I still prefer sfam absolutely been going for years and I love the salt taste, A top tip I use Before you open boil your kettle and pour it over the tin then it slides out 😊
When a kid any chopped ham and pork OR spam were from a shop which gave slices, quite thin and circular in shape cut from a joint of either spam or chopped pork on some sort of a slicing hand use slicer. WE never ate it other than cold on rolls with tomato and coleslaw normally tbh.
Gareth I've just tried Aldis chopped pork and ham with mushrooms and rice in my stuffed peppers instead of Spam and I think the Spam has more flavour. Keep up the good work.
13:34 well corrected at the end about it being 100 gms. Also, the tin says eat within 2 days of opening so you have less time if you live alone. Or, you could save more money and enjoy Honey roast ham instead (like we do)
Yes it is considerably expensive nowadays compared to back in the day. However tastes great. I always have a tin of it in the cupboard along with a tin of bacon fry . Good video 👍
Hello Gareth, good to see the cans now have ring pulls as every time i tried to open these cans with the keys i`d end up getting half way round only to have the metal strip all over the place and i could never get the meat out in one piece. My Mother used to buy jellied veal in the co-op every week and we loved that, i`ve never seen that for years. Used to buy it by the 1/4lb or 1/2lb. always cut very thin.
I think the Bramwells product, having less salt, is probably equivalent to SPAM Lite. These two products look so similar, they must surely be made in the same factory. I will definitely buy a tin of the Bramwells after I've used the tin of Pek Gold I bought recently. I do buy SPAM every now and again, but only the Lite version, as the standard SPAM is far too salty for me.
Hi Gareth I would guess they are made by the same food producer, but just add more salt to the Spam version. I must say usually any product made in Denmark is Spot On 👍😁😎 Gareth I cannot remember have you ever tried the Aldi Lurpack equivalent butter 🤔 I personally find it much better than Lurpack and it is less than half the price.
Spam with the home bargains Mayflower curry sauce, Gaz. A revelation! Just back from a long weekend at Centre Parcs at Penrith, food wasn’t stunning for the price of it!
You've just popped up in my feed! I don't follow any food related channels but I love the "everyday" foods you're testing! (I don't eat most of them any more but i think I'm going to have to search out some new sections in my supermarket now)! All the best to you!
Never seen a ring pull tin, they usually come with a key. If you're struggling to shake it out the can? Pierce the base of the can with a can opener to allow the air to flow, making it easier to slide straight out.
Seems the bramwells is the one to buy seeing as they are virtually identical except for a lower salt content which is actually a bonus for most people.
I'm on a low carb diet, so sometimes I dry fry a few slices of Spam Lite (30% less fat, 25% less salt) for breakfast, with eggs and mushrooms. Food of Kings! I find normal Spam too salty
I love chopped pork - like you, fried or cold it's gorgeous! Thanks for a great review Gareth, really good analysis and a fair comparison. I wonder where I'd buy from . . . . . 😉😉
I love Spam! If you chop it up and dice it like an onion it goes well in allsorts of things. In America they have Turkey, Jalapeño, Oak Smoked, and Hickory Spam too - lucky them!
