Dearest Friends :-D the NEW AUDIO TECHNICA AT-VM95EN VS the new GOLDRING E2 !
We look at how they perform here, and the winner here :-D would soon be shown to be outperformed, by an old friend, a familiar superb cartridge. This latter shoot-out will form the next episode, after which I will be going to my local retailer to buy the MoFi StudioPhono, and ordering online: the Tisbury Audio Domino :-D ! Let's look forward!
Happy Lunar New Year buddies!
My wife, Moko, me, 2 sonnies and their girlfriends, have recent many walkabouts in Chinatown due to the festivities around this Lunar New Year period :-D thank you for being with us!
~ ian
Equipment used:
Technics SL1200Mk5, Jelco HS-25 headshell, Herbie’s Way Excellent Mat,
Schiit Mani,
Schiit Jil (as Analogue-to-Digital conversion to digital files for upload).
*Background :-)
Dearest Friends and Buddies,
I am Ian and I reside in sunny Singapore. I love our Vinyl Community and Vinyl Music. Vinyl analogue playback is utterly blissful, and I want for fellow friends and buddies to engage in vinyl music for many, many years in their life, each vinyl buddy through their school life, through the hustle and bustle of daily work, accompany them through precious hours at home with their family members or in their hostel with their friends. Vinyl music is blissful, free of time smear, phase shift, pre-ring and post-ring that plagues digital playback. Vinyl buddies and friends can all attest to that. It is not warm in the “bassy warm” sense, it is not soothing in the sense that “everything gets smoothed out”. It is because it is analogue, very detailed, calm, invigorating, enthralling, dynamic, refreshing. In a word, blissful. Utterly :-D
I want for all to get the very equipment that will get us there. These equipment, I firmly believe, are present, and existent, even at affordable price points!..and I started off in Dec 2015 hunting out for them, selling off my own Rega RP6 (which my wife and I loved) to fund the first batch of cartridges for review: the 5 cartridges in Group A ($70-$80), and the 7 cartridges in Group B ($90-$130). Subsequently I told myself to set aside $500-$1000 per month from my monthly salary to buy equipment to review. My own money. Quite a hefty sum monthly, significant to me, as I am a salaried man. This is my commitment. I believe in every field, there are people who have to make the sacrifice to pursue their love for the greater good, and to serve, the community of friends. I have also downsized my car in mid-2017 so as to commit these monies to fund these projects. I totally, rigorously, and kindly reject all forms of donations, be they from friends, from retailers, from manufacturers. This is a hobby, and my teachers and advisors in life have advised me that to bring balance to life, and to be wholesome, one will engage in a livelihood (daily job or business) that earns the monies, and one will also simultaneously engage in a hobby/service in life that is non-competitive, non-monetarily-remunerative. My wife totally understands what I want to do for the community and she so kindly supports my decision and efforts. Vinyl music is a lovely hobby I hold dearly. Friends and buddies are my ultimate responsibility and my love. I want the very best for them, and to provide totally honest reviews. Moles exist in hifi forums, moles also exist from benefactors who donate. I do not want to remotely encounter any moles masquerading as benefactors donating to my cause, only to find out sooner or later that such donations were/are from certain manufacturers or retailers. Everybody will do things differently. I want to maintain my status as a common-folk, aspire always to adopt the Shokunin spirit: of spending the utmost diligent care, through unhurried work, never caring for returns, in perfecting their work for the community. The personal satisfaction of getting to the very best equipment in each price class to help all my lovely buddies and friends is, the only thing, in store for me :-D We toast to the joy and bliss of vinyl analogue music. Vinyl Music deserves our love and attention. Our listening. Our care.
We toast to the lively spirit of:
“Everybody will be dancing and doing it right!"
Let's go, buddies and friends!!!
Warmest Regards,
~ ian :-D

That was a great review Ian. Thank you for taking your valuable time to teach us what to listen for when determining the right cart for our needs. I really look forward to your reviews. As I look outside at this moment it’s cold and snowing but I felt a warming watching your Chinatown video. Have a very happy Lunar New Year!

I certainly heard that high end on the E2, even at my reduced bitrate on YT. It's been so long since I've been in a crowded city - just watching the marketplace I could sense I would have been overwhelmed - life on the farm I'm used to a little more space.

Dear Ian, I have been watching and “listening” for quite some time now, and must say thank you for what you do for us, the silent vinyl community. I recently upgraded to the Schiit Mani and love it. Thank you for your coverage of carts and I hope to upgrade soon. Keep up the great work and “fun” reviews. From Southern California, Scott

Dear Brother Scott :-D, thank you for your very kind words and time actually all these while. I am humbled to have your support and encouragement. Thank you! Yes, i believe there is the majority silent vinyl community...and we know better. We are the 99.99999999% of honest guys here. Not that 0.00000001% of self-created PAID equipment reviewers who claim to know better than us. They are paid, and they are never honest. They are paid big sums. Huge sums to support their ring. Those awards? To put it very kindly: influenced. Honest audio manufacturers have come by SIngapore before, and they have, separately, revealed the horrible things that have been going on in these rings. Very shocking and saddening to hear...and they are big names. Very big names. One thing good about the internet is that information provided by passionate and honest people and untainted by money, can be availed to everybody. You and i will make it right. We will keep winning. Warmest Regards to you, your family and your circle of vinyl'ing brothers there in your community, ~ ian.

The output level of the two cardridges is not normalized. Therefore the slightly louder GR E2 seems to sound better.

The really good cartridge from the new VM95 line is the ML version. The EN version is just marginal better than the E version with a bonded stylus. Imho the EN has the worst price/quality ratio in the entire line.
@cdeaker

I bought a VM540ML before the VM95 line was out - the microline really digs out the detail. I would have bought the VM95 ML if was available at the time. There isn’t much price difference between the EN & ML VM95 styluses (about $50) but the step up in performance is huge

Utter rubbish. I had the Goldring E2 and it caused IGD and bad sibilance on used records. It's ok if you only play new records. I have over 4000 records and the Goldring couldn’t handle the inner grooves of used records well at all, notorious with spherical and elliptical stylus. I then bought a VM95EN and the IGD and sibilance were gone with the NAKED elliptical. Take this guys advice with a pinch of salt. If you have loads of used records stay away from Bonded elliptical & spherical stylus.
@shortakes4k
@shortakes4k 3 года назад
What are your equipments? I carefully aligned in a Rega Planar 2 with a modified anti-skating to work with VTF at 2 grams. For sure there must be some IGD due to conical stylus, but It's not noticeable. Going further, I digitized the last track on the same disc disc with AT-VM95ML (using an external sound card) and I can't any difference in IGD, and even SQ. Advocating a little in favor of Goldring, despite the cartridge being AT, I realized that the stylus assembly in the cantilever is different, with superior quality control. Different suplier maybe. It's my experience with both cartridges.

To buy the Goldring E2 was a mistake of mine. The left channel always showed up being louder, than the right channel after recording songs. All my other cartridges, the AT91, AT95E and AT95EX don't have this problem.

Another excellent review,objective, honest and adoptable.Ive found that agood s spherical provided the cantilever is flexible can extract as much information and detail as an elliptical .Goldring quality control let the company down in the eighties,rather like British cars,It is to be hoped that this has significantly improved.
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 5 лет назад
Dear Buddy Ted!!! :-D thank you! YES :-D a good spherical can do better than an elliptical, if its cantilever and suspension is well engineered indeed!!!! Gosh I didn't know about that bit of Goldring's history in the 80s... currently and luckily their 1000 series are still made in England and still sounding great! Quite many friends having and loving their 1006 and 1042s! hehheh! Warmest Regards to you and your family!!

Hi! There must be something about the compliance of the cartridges. Tonearm mass (12g) + Cartridge weight + headshell (11.4g) favors Goldring specifications (6.9g and 10 cu dynamic compliance)

@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 5 лет назад
Hi Buddy😄, thanks for coming by! Let me explain: *both carts* have the same exact output: *3.5mV*. It was a typo mistake in my part: the E2's output is not 5.0mV. Both output 3.5mV😄. The sound files recorded are truthful to the playback...and looking at the files and waveforms, the E2 exhibits better dynamics...given the same base noise floor and untouched sound files. We cannot stop one better cartridge from exhibiting better dynamics🤗, and therefore this would be fair. The 95EN's waveforms show significantly poorer dynamics. Very, very obvious on looking at the waveforms and on hearing realtime. Warmest Regards Buddy 😄👍

Happy Lunar New Year Ian! I was just about to get the vm mono, but now after watching your video, perhaps I’ll stick with their AT mono. Will you be doing a side-by-side review of the Nagaoka mp200 vs an equivalently priced VM Audio-Technica?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 5 лет назад
Dear Buddy :-D ...Happy Lunar New Year my friend!!! Yes, regarding the VM series... i had bought the VM520EB, 530EN and 540ML and i have tested and auditioned the 520EB and 530EN, and the reviews were put up last year. Their performance are very disappointing and fared poorly absolutely, and comparatively to other carts in their individual price classes. I had witheld the 540ML so far because of highly likely suboptimal performance because they are using the same cartridge bodies, and only differing in stylus type. The body, the engine is very important. :-D good suggestion my friend, you are right: but I will more likely be getting the 760SLC to do be reviewed and shoot-out with the Goldring 1042, Nagaoka MP-500 and Ortofon 2M Black which are in my cabinet. It will come in time. I hope to do my very best. Currently, I am doing the more pertinent reviews which many friends have been asking for, the E2, E3, MoFi StudioPhono reviews.... and that Schiit Sol turntable which should be out soon in this 1st quarter of 2019. Very good times ahead for us vinyl users indeed :-D!!!! Warmest Regards my friend, and again, thank you for your kindness and support! Happy spinnings! ~ ian.

Hi zeram. I own both the vm610 mono and the at mono3lp. In my opinion the at mono is a better sounding cart. In general I think the vm610 is a bit forward and bright and sounds exciting at first but tiresome over extended listening. The at mono3 is more balanced, open, smooth, warm and refined.
@zeram01
@zeram01 5 лет назад
Dyed Blue thanks for the info. I read that at mono3 needs a lot of “amplification”. In fact, it’s not recommended for use with the at LP-120 (which I have). I was wondering if that means it won’t sound good with the built in pre amp in said tut, or in the Pro-Ject (also with built in pre amp) that I have. Any opinions?

@mohrimotonari
@mohrimotonari 5 лет назад
I am using the schiit mani which probably allows for more fine tuning than the built in pre. The output for the at-mono is only 1.3 so I do have to add more gain, even though it can play through a mm preamp. But if you have to turn the volume up, you might start to hear more hum/hiss. I wish I could give you better advice, but I’m not as experienced as Ian and others here in the VC. Maybe the Grado ME+ may also be an option? Good luck and post your experience.

@@HiViNywschannel Hello Ian. After seeing MP500, my eyes widened and now I'm on high alert! Oh my, I can't wait. I trust your in depth and honest reviews and my last three purchases - the MP 150, MP 200 stylus and the Schiit Mani did not disappoint and I thank you for your direction. But this leaves me with a dilema. The MP500 and a used Technics SL 1200 series cost roughly the same. What am I to do?!!! Dear Ian, Nice review! I think that the prices of Goldring and Nagaoka are varying depending on the region. I Europe the Goldrings are much cheaper than the equivalent Nagaokas. For example, in Romania, the E2 costs around 85 dollars, the E3 is 105 and the Nagaoka 110 is 180. The same difference is between the 1042 (around 330 dollars) and MP 150 (400). That is why I am watching your reviews with great interest. By the way, is the E2 better than Elektra (which I still enjoy very much)? All the best, Catalin

Dear Catalin, if you buy the Nagaoka MP-110 direct from the ebay sellers in Japan, they should come in at about USD108 inclusive of shipping ~453Leu , ~95 euros. www.ebay.com/itm/Nagaoka-MP-110-Stereo-Cartridge-Cartridge-single-elliptical-chip-bonded-diamond/143119819583?epid=691141298&hash=item21529b233f:g:lS0AAOSwV0NcWr5I:rk:1:pf:0 I hope this helps... guys in Singapore too buy direct from these Japanese ebay sellers too... there are several of them. I trust this "emjmusic" seller most. :-D My Elektra is close to the end of its stylus life, and I dare not do an AB comparison with the E2 coz it would not be fair then... apologies my friend. What a fantastic intro. I got to tell you Ian, whenever I watch your new video it brings on a whole lot of smiles. Uplifting to the max. It is so good to see you. I am sold on the Gold Ring. I believe that it was the clarity of the cymbals in the Art Blakey drop that was key in my decision. Also clearly tops in the Hank Mobley drop. I have a quick question for you. I just bought a new/out of the box Sl-1200 eighties model turntable. I am really enjoying it. What cartridge would you suggest to add to it for price and overall sound? You are truly one of the best in all things audio. It would be an honor to hear your opinion/response. How about the Goldring E2 ? Thanks so much for all of your efforts to produce these wonderful videos Ian. I love and enjoy all of them. My best to you and hello's to your family. Talk soon~ Rob/Boston

Hi, Ian! So great to see another video! That footage of the Chinese New Year reminded me fondly of being a kid in the late 70’s/early 80’s, when my grandfather owned a butcher shop in Boston, MA. There was a parade of dragons dancing down the streets and a ton and of fireworks going off everywhere. It was actually quite frightening for a little kid, but I still have great memories of it as I grew older. Lol. 😁 Thanks for the great vids again, Ian! I’ve been loving my Goldring 1006 for a few months now, and I’m aware of what amazing carts they make. Your friend, - Nick

Given that AT makes both cartridges. I'm surprised there's that much difference between the two, especially in that the Goldring with the spherical stylus holds its own so well. You'd think AT would want to keep that kind of an advantage for itself.
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 4 года назад
Hehheh...you are right..."we'd think AT would want to keep that kind of advantage for itself"... But i thought about it Brother Larry :-D ...Probably it goes the same as for dealers for most other things in the industry: The OEM manufacturer would try to OEM make for other companies, and allow the other companies to flourish, OTHERWISE, the other companies would suffer in sales and stop all agreements with the OEM manufacturer. Even tyre companies, e.g. Falken tyres are sold more expensive at the Falken distributor and shop here, while the same model ones are sold cheaper at the Falken dealers (who get their stocks from the Falken distributor) :-D !!! Warmest Regards Buddy, and, thank you for coming by and chatting with me again!!! Have fun always my friend, and wishing you and your family peace and prosperity for the new year 2020!!!! ~ ian.

I use the Blue Note reissues to evaluate cartridges. The sound must be at least clear enough to reveal the frequent tape overload on drums without further blunting the bass drum and floor tom and making the cymbals sound even rougher. The Goldring E2 passed this test; the A-T VM95EN did not.

Initially I was surprised to see this comparison. Here in the UK the VM95EN goes for £100, whereas the E2 is around £75. I thought the AT would wipe the floor with the E2, but apparently not! I actually bought the E3 version recently, and again for a lot cheaper than the VM95EN. It has been great so far, however the capacitance it requires is way lower than my Onkyo amp's phono stage, so next stop is an external phono stage to get the best out of it. By the way, I had a great visit to Singapore over Christmas and visited the famous Adelphi :D lots of wonderful equipment, however the record shop you recommended to visit in the basement was closed both times. Never mind! Thanks for another great video.

Hey, nice review, as always Ian. Yes, I could tell the difference between the two, though the differences in many ways was not huge, the areas where the E2 edges further out than the AT cart is in clarity, separation and the attacks, which bring son a bolder, punchier overall performance. When you played the section from McCoy Tyner's LP with trumpet and sax, definitely could ascertain the separation of the two with the Goldring over the AT cart. While the AT cart was not bad, it could be better, but the Goldring outperforms it even with the "handicap" of the spherical stylus. As other's have already intimated, I suspected already you were hinting at those "pesky" Nagaokas, the 110 or 150. :-)

Ian, you're simply the best one on RU-vid, your tests are actual, current and most accurate! You have a great life philosophy Ian and I and many people here appreciate a lot all your efforts. In almost the same manner I began the journey in early 70's with an old Thorens 160/Shure, Quad 33/303 and AR6 loudspeakers and still is driven by the very same spirit of the vinyl, all these years but with help of just a little better equipment. You do a very good job for new vinyl community and I wish you and your people only the best. Lo Greetings

@@HiViNywschannel You can find a number of interesting New-old-stock cartridges and styli in Europe at online dealers like www.thakker.eu (Germany) or www.pickupnaalden.com (Netherlands). Especially the latter is also a good source in case you need a replacement stylus for a rare or old cartridge. Yes, I'm very pleased with the MP-100. I originally bought it when I accidently smashed my MP-30 stylus and at that time did not have the budget to buy a replacement stylus. Now I use it for playing used LPs of unknown quality, but it's a really good cartridge for its price, as long as the music does not get too busy (e.g. large ensemble tutti). Btw. Nagaoka cartridges became really expensive in Europe during the last 1-2 years.

Hi Ian, first of all i want to thank you for the reviews that you have made with your own money - respect for that. I am watching your videos for a while and i must tell that there are the best i've seen. I recently aquire a new Audiotechnica AT-LP120xusb turntable. It came with VM95E cartridge. It sound decent. I've tried an external preamp Atoll PH100 and the result was very close to the internal preamp. Do you have information if the PHONO mode connect the cartridge to the RCA output without any filtering (like in the old model LP120USB)? I've tried RegaCarbon cartridge and it sounds better than VM95E. Which cartridge do you sugest for that turntable? My system consits in: atlp120xusb tt, unico primo hybrid amplifier and Triangle Genese Trio speakers. Thank you in advance and for your help!

This is the answer from the Audio Technica support team:" From looking at the circuit diagrams it seems that once the pre-amp is switched from line to phono the output shares the ground, however the signal bypasses the pre-amp circuit straight to the L+R output of the turntable. The signal therefore doesn't pass through any unnecessary circuitry, and components. " Still, I have doubts. When i tried the external preamp and switch 47kohm load, a huge hiss appear. After I removed the load, the hiss desapear. Ian, did a Nagaoka MP 110 brings a brighter and more detail sound compared to Rega Carbon that a curently use on ATLP120XUSB( conical stylus)?

Another nice review Ian thank you. Not related to this particular cartridge, I do have a question for you, I purchased the Nagaoka Mp110 and I also bought the Jelco Headshell that you use. I cannot use the MP110 on my techies 1200mk2 because the combined weight of the Headshell and cartridge are to heavy for me to achieve a floating balance in order to set tracking weight. Do I need to purchase a heavier counterweight? Hope you can help as I am really wanting to listen to my MP110 otherwise either the Headshell or cartridge will just become paperweights.I do not want to put blueback on the counterweight. I am new to vynil so need guidance please. Regards Colin
@DaleFrewaldt
@DaleFrewaldt 5 лет назад
Without throwing good money after bad, you could tape a penny to the tonearm. Pennies are 2.5 grams, and would give you an idea of whether or not a heavier counterweight will address the issue without actually spending money on a solution.

I wonder how much comes down to the higher output of the Goldring, as tonally they seemed quite similar. In the UK, the elliptical-tipped E3 (£80 is 20 pounds cheaper than the VM95EN (£100), so may be tempted to get one for my LP5, which has the stock AT95EX.

@HiViNywschannel 5 лет назад
Big apologies Buddy....I made a typo error in the video which somebody had pointed out earlier: both the E2 and 95en have the same output of 3.5mV each. And yes🤗, you U.K. friends are having it good as Goldring carts are constantly lower in price than the rest of the world✔👋😄!!!

@@HiViNywschannel Haha, I wish! I'm running an Audio Technica LP5 into an old Sony mini system! Not what you'd call HiFi but I like it. It's about the same level as the kit in your previous video really - budget but decent value for money. I will upgrade to a proper separates system in the near future but my living circumstances mean space and the volume I can play my music are limited, which makes a serious upgrade a little pointless at this moment in time.
