The Freshfoam 1080 range has long been one of New Balance’s most popular shoes for cushioned daily training. However, despite the chunky level of midsole foam, the shoe has historically veered towards a firmer ride.
The 1080v13 has modified the shoe with a new, softer Fresh Foam midsole to improve the level of cushioning and comfort, as well as redesigned the upper with a new breathable mesh that offers more structure than earlier versions.
The Clifton 9 sees some modifications to its predecessor, specifically to make it lighter and to offer a higher level of cushioning. It’s a shoe designed for comfort over daily runs featuring a softer compression moulded EVA foam midsole, a breathable engineered knit upper and a gusseted tongue.
Tom and Nick have been testing the shoes out to see which one is worth spending your money on.

Like how you compared these two! Went to a running shop last weekend and the attendant picked these two to compare. Went with the 1080v3s for the more cushion! Great review fellas

I went to pick up some new shoes and tried both of these. Initially I didn't like the V13 and really enjoyed the Clifton. But I wanted to try the mach 5 before I decided. I went back to try the mach 5. I wasnt totally sold. I tried some new balance and didn't realize they were the same as the ones I tried initially, v13. And, I fell in love with them. My wife was with me the first time. I showed her the shoes and she said they were the same shoes haaaaa not sure what happen. I ended up getting the v13.

Very interesting comparison, gents, thank you! I might give the 1080v3 a try but the Clifton.9 remains, by far, my favorite daily trainer. Weight, drop, price and fit make me think I too would prefer it over the 1080v3. I don't hear this mentioned very often, but it's that little bit of 'rigidity' of the midsole (nowhere as extreme as the Bondi's) that makes it the perfect shoe for me (frequent victim of foot issues) and a winner over competitors that are supposedly more dynamic/flexy or bouncy/plushy....

Completely agree. The bit of rigidity and rocker have been great for my ankles. The cushioned shoes like the 1080 aren’t as stable.

100% agree. I use the Arahi which is of course a bit stiffer but the Hoka ride in so many models just works for me.

So, which one will you recommend best for standing all day or long work?

Which wide you have by the NB? I'm not sure whether to go for standard width or wide. The ball of my foot is 10.5 cm wide.

Hi guys, quick question? Looking to step up my running shoe game a bit, have been using the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 for everything. I want to buy one shoe for slow easy long runs and one shoe for speed work&race day. Both non-cushioned, please. Which ones can you recommend?

I have 2 Clifton 9's, use them for walking, love them! Wife has pair as a present as well. So many shoes, so little time! Keep up the good work.

i don't plan on running much if at all, i like to do walking, 10-20k steps a day, feet and shins start to hurt a lot after walking for a while, which would be better for this? i assume 1080 because its more cushioned so my feet wont hurt as much?

Both shoes come in widths so don't let a narrow fit in standard sizing deter you.

I ordered 1080 v13 TTS and it felt a half size SMALL. Also felt really narrow on me. I usually never purchase wide and alway order TTS, but this one seems (for me) to need a half size UP and possibly wide. I haven’t heard anyone with this experience in the 1080. Everyone else seems to be true size. Hmm

Hoka se equihoka, por sus suelas con surcos que aligeran peso y pierden estabilidad y durabilidad, dejan de amortiguar con pocos kms.
