I loved the rebel v2.And was really looking forward to the V3. My longest run in the week is a 9km run. Pace 4:30. The rest of the week i run faster and maximum 6km.pace 4min to 4:10. So i do 25km per week and for me the Rebel V3 is a perfect shoe in my rotation. Love your show!!!! Keep running
as someone who run in Rebel v1, 2 n 3, i believe NB continued this series to cater for those who came from NB 1500/1600 n Zante. Low stack(albiet wider n cushy now with fuelcell) lightweight 'minimalist'. 👌
Thanks for the review, I loved my V2s, they had the easiest lockdown I've ever experienced in a running shoe, and I always wanted to pick up the pace when I run with them. After 300km the forefoot foam bottomed out, I used a very padded insole and squeezed another 150km, all in all it was great while it lasted. I'd consider the v3 if I found them on a sale.
First Rebel I’ve had & 10 miles in, I’m enjoying the FuelCell cushion. I’m also currently using the Speed 3, Speed 2, Kinvara 12 & Velocity Nitro 1 in my rotation.
Another great review, thanks Fordy. For absolute speed interval workouts (i.e., fast 200s, fast 400s, hill repeats, etc) would you recommend the Rebel v3 over the Razor v4, which you loved? What absolute speed interval workout would you recommend if not these two? I currently use the Speed 3 for longer tempo runs and for long runs with marathon surges and fast finish long runs. Cheers
I'm not a reviewer but I run 70~80 miles per week (about 2/3 on the road and 1/3 on trails) and I can afford to have around 35 good running shoes in my rotation. Kind of crazy, I know, but it's still a lot cheaper than my previous hobbies of collecting and playing boutique electric guitars through boutique tube (known as valve in UK!) amps and being an audiophile junkie collecting $5K headphones and a DAC/amp system that cost more than nice cars. I find running and rotating nice running shoes far more economical, much better for my health, and just outright more fun than cork-sniffing on attributes of electric guitars or hi-fi speakers, etc. Anyway, I have the Rebel v3 and I use it for very limited purposes: the gym three days per week, which includes 20-minute sessions playing racquetball besides weightlifting, doing strides and sprints three days per week before going on longer runs in other shoes, and running as fast as I can for 5K or less, and stuff like that. For these kinds of things, the Rebel v3 is awesome. Do I want to put more than 5 miles on it on a typical daily run? No. I have many other nice shoes for that. I agree that the Rebel v3 has a rather limited usage case. Daily trainer? There's the Endorphin Speed 3, Novablast 3, and Deviate Nitro 2 that are far better. Speed/tempo work for 5K to half-marathon distances? I'll take the Takumi Sen 8, VaporFly 2, and Endorphin Pro 3. Long distance? Let's not even get into that. Easy/recovery? Let's not get into that either. But I love the Rebel v3 for speed and agility. I guess NB is now positioning it as a 'daily trainer' but it's more like a niche within a niche. Fortunately, for me, I didn't mind spending $130 on the Rebel v3 for doing some very specific things, which it does very well. Cheers!
If this shoe was released 10 years ago you'd see so many people racing in them. I think the running shoe market is so saturated now with everything from 5k specific race shoes to plated trail shoes that it's a lot easier to be picky and critique certain shoes. This shoe seems like a good one to pick up next year when the price drops a little, if it was £110 I'd buy it with no hesitation.
I love this shoe and i’m enjoying it however i understand your point. If someone can afford a good rotation there are better options (ex: Novablast 3). In my case i wanna stay minimalist since i dont do races/competitions, so im having only 2 shoes that provides me fun while running, rebel v3 covers that for me, the other one just for recovery session. Nice video btw, thanks!
Just got the v3 as my first NB. I don’t race but like to run. I have a Pegasus, Hoka Speedgoat 4 and the v3. I have a borderline wide foot and the wide v3 felt very good during my first short run. I will take the to the track tomorrow for a fartlek, which I’m looking forward to.
i do interval training /short tempo runs with the rebel v2 ,its a joy running in,i prefer them over the endorphin speed ,certain sizes of this new version in an ugly green color is on sale at running warehouse
I think you need to think about this in terms of a single line. Long Runs - New Balance SC Trainer Tempo Runs - New Balance Fuelcell Rebel v3 Raceday - New Balance SC Elite v3 Then, add in speciality shoes as money and need permit. I love the New Balance SC Pacer for 5ks, and 10ks with a lot of corners. So, if you are like me, I've bought shoes that were highly rated (even ones you recommend) that I just hate. They don't work for me at all. With New Balance, I'm sure every single thing they put out works for my foot. May not be the best, but it is never the worst. They are consistently good or better. Can't say that about any other brand. I guess if you have the time, funds, and energy to test a wide variety of shoes, you can optimize each shoe in your rotation. But, if I just need to fill a slot, I tend to default to what I know works. I know I'm not going to end up with a Saucony Endorphin Pro, that just made me hate running, even though I love running in the Saucony Peregrine. Love your content! Thanks for the information.
I think shoes can come and go, in terms of the satisfaction of running in them. I do believe that, with patience, any running shoe can grow on you. However, some do infact feel great right out of the box. Sometimes the versatility that Fordy is alluding to in this video, can really go a long way. The Boston 10 has been a great shoe in my rotation. Sure, it's a bit of a brick, but it goes faster than the Novablast 2 and the 1080v12. It's the only daily trainer in my collection where I could say, "Let's do a race!". That doesn't necessarily mean that I will chose it over the Vaporfly, but if I wanted to pick up the pace and maybe get a bit more out of my run, I know I could comfortably sustain that in the Boston 10. It's also a very nice recovery run shoe.
And this is why I stick with Rebel¹. It is more minimal and I enjoy it more on track sessions. Rebel² is wobbly and that limits my running. So if the R³ is more limited... (back to point 1]
I found mine for 70 US$ - couldn't pass that deal up! Some brands just don't have "good" shoes on sale. You can always find a deal on New balance and Saucony.
I have just tried them. At first, they do not like a warm-up pace, in contrast they nicely took up the speed, BUT , for me, the fit was too narrow (even though I have narrow feet), the ground contact was too direct and they felt even unstable. In addition, I really had the feeling that I had to work hard to keep up the pace, with less energy return. For me there is no match, so I am looking for tips for a shoe that is more cushioning and stable for speed and interval workouts (training for first marathon). Endorphin Speed 3 ? NB SC trainer ?
Great review, I have the REBEL V2 but it's really unstable and terrible for slow or long runs. You feel every stone you land on.. You mentioned the Mach 5 which I find miles ahead. Very stable and protective yet really quick. I get similar feeling between the Mach 5 and the Hyperion Tempo. Rebel V2 just had no structure in the upper to survive a long run.. Speed 2 and 3 probably better then all 😁
I wish companies would stop changing shoes to be more usable for the masses. We're ending up with 30 of the exact same shoe. Keep them individual, that's what makes them special!
Loved the V2. The upper did tend to split easily although I got over 300 miles in mine before they did. Could do with a decent colourway in the V3 though... It's going tto have to be green...
Liked rebel v1, loved rebel v2, got 4 pairs of them. Not sure I'd want to do long runs in them, but v2 you could do almost anything else. The little bit extra in v3 might allow it to go for that longer run. V2 I could do everything from 200 meter hills to tempo runs.
mine bottomed out after 8km, and foam lasted good for 250km. thats why not buying rebel anymore. stack is nevertheless the same there. enjoyable shoe but versatility and durability...
@@munkki2700 I could take v1 up to 15k, v2 a little longer. All my v1 and all my v2s lasted about 600km. Definitely prefer it on runs of 12k and less. Might try something like sc trainer if I decide to start doing long runs.
Funny how people see shoes. I loved the V2 for easy long runs! Loved it! The Speed 1 if I wanted to pick up the pace a bit. My fav shoe all time-Speed 1!!
Loved my Rebel v2 because they were so flexible, they made me want to pick up the pace and I do like how to ride on them. v3 wow such a big and high stack not for me.
The rebel is clearly made for a up tempo session, max. 12 km… after a certain distance you start to feel the ground to much! It’s a brutal nimble shoe that works for lighter body’s and experiences runners out there….
"A bit pointless"!...interesting conclusion...BUT how does it feel cf the Novablast when you are running in them?! Care to expand a little?! I'd love to know as considering both! Thanks Fordy.
I have 2 pairs of the V2, loved the optics and light weight. But I think they lack the structure and stability my feet require, so I have mixed feelings.
Nah. Realizing the more I watch your videos that we have very different preferences. I have both the Novablast 3 and the rebel v3. The ASICS is too narrow for me and the foam bottoms out in the forefoot and isn’t as bouncy as the rebel v3. Between the two I would recommend the rebel v3, no contest.
great review.., with this first impression, I definitely sounds like I can wait.., maybe not partake at all.., my rotation is fair to middling right now, so I will probably just roll with what I have
Looking like a baby face, Chris 😂 All in all, love your reviews. They are honest. As you said in your podcast with Thomas from BITR, you have to be honest, and some manufacturers like it that way. They need to know where to improve.
Thanks mate yes I think we all need to up our game tbh I know one channel that’s all journalists but they don’t mention hardly ever they were sent the stuff and didn’t pay for it which is a real shame
Depends on distance and your body. For 5k - 10k races, Vaporfly if you can run in them - very unstable. Speed 3 is ok for both. Hoka Mach 5 is also ok. f you need support shoes, maybe asics kayano, saucony guide 15, saucony tempus.. go to a running store and try them before buying
I found the rebel v2 far too soft for my liking and in the end I sold mine. Going to give the v3 a miss as there are just far better options on the market currently. Oh and another rejection from the London marathon ballot for me, I can't wait to watch it for another year on the tele, watching people be interviewed who have done it 8 or 9 times and get a ballot place every year 🤬
Its fairly obvious you give honest reviews, if you bought it yourself or sent by a firm.. Saves you some pennies to spend on your next silly adventure.
