Fabulous. I just put this on lay away and am researching if this is the unit. It is! The salesperson had as much enthusiasm as you do about this machine. Thank you for helping me make up my mind!

Hi! Thanks for your videos on that B79. They’re so helpful. I can’t seem to find a 1/4 inch foot for it though. Do you know if I need to buy a universal presser foot holder so I can just use the 1/4 inch foot I had for my Brother machine?

Hi, Cody. I hope you are doing well. I am looking to purchase a computerized sewing machine. I saw the Bernette 79, and love all the functions. I mostly saw garments and home décor items. My future project is to sew some drapes for my home. These will require several layers of fabric and Buckram... I was wondering, how sturdy is the machine to sew on several layers of fabric. Also, if the inside construction is heavy built, though no plastic. I wonder if you can demonstrate how the machine sew on several layers of fabric. With the Covid restrictions I am not able to "test" the machine. Thanks much for your advice. God bless and stay safe. Sheila

I will see what I can do. However If you were a customer in my shop after listening to what you just said about the types of fabrics you would be sewing especially the Buckram I would suggest either the BERNINA 215 or one of the 3 Series machines, they are much stronger. However they don't have all the bells and whistles like the b79 but they are more robust meaning more metal components. ;) But I will see what I can do about a video :)

Hi Cody. I really appreciate your instructional videos and see that there are quite a few new ones. I am a new owner of a b79 and have the mother of all dumb questions. I’m trying to change the needle and can’t seem to get it far enough up the shank so that it’s secure once I’ve tightened the screw. Yes, flat side to the back. I’m using a dental mirror to make I’m going into the opening. Your thoughts?
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 4 года назад
Not a dumb question. There could be a couple of possibilities why you can't get the needle all the way up the shaft of the needle bar. 1. there could be a broken tip of the screw that hold the needle in place broken off so you can't get the needle all the way up because of blockage. So completely unscrew the needle and see if they needle is intact all the way to the tip. 2. I've see with other machines, rare as it may be i've seen this. Sometimes there could be some blockage in the shaft caused by the screw that holds the needle we've seen this when the screw at some point on accident got screwed in all the way without the needle being complelty up and the screw created a burr in the shaft. So after you check to make sure the needle screw is intact you can take an old needle and turn it upside down and place the pointy end into the shaft and kind of move it around and see if you can clear the way for the needle to be inserted. I've had to do this with an overlocker before and thats all it was was some minor blockage. Rare yes but we've seen it. I hope this made sense and I hope its helps, good luck

@@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 I'm thinking that I would put a piece of paper or fabric over all the holes in the throat plate to catch any tiny metal shards that may fall out.

Thank you for your vids. So helpful/informative! just got a b79 for my BDay. Looking forward to watching your series on the b79. Two questions: if I select Home then Sewing, the first screen shows to insert a bobbin case/holder. It has one installed. Is that normal? Q2: when I raise the pressure foot using the button it goes up and down smoothly. But if I use the knee bar it chatters when the foot goes up. Is that normal? Appreciate any insights offered!
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 3 года назад
GREAT Questions!!! The newer b79 machine are coming with an additional bobbin case for embroidery that are represented by a red dot "if i remember correct". The bobbin case with the colored marking on it is for embroidery, this bobbin case has a slightly higher tensions to ensure you have a prettier satin stitch. So the machine is telling you to place that embroidery bobbin case in the machine if it isn't already in the machine. It doesn't know what case you have in the machine. So yes when we use the knee lift the machines make an extra little noise (a mechanical noise) that is normal. However if it is abnormally loud noise that may be a problem.

@@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 Hi Cody. Thank you for your thoughtful response. As an update to my original post, you are correct that the b79 comes with two bobbin cases: one for sewing and one for embroidery as you described in your reply. On the sewing bobbin there is a black triangle/arrow at the lower right of the case. On the embroidery bobbin case this triangle/arrow is red. Regarding the chattering sound that’s made when the presser foot is raised using the knee lever, I asked my local Bernina tech about it and he is going to touch base with Bernina support for more info and let me know. Take care. Stay safe!

Hi Cody, Thank you very much for all your well done and super informative videos ! I am looking to buy my first sewing machine and the only experience I have is with an old mechanical sewing machine (and my experience is not recent either). I am quite handy when it comes to machine, electronic and DIY project in general. I am looking for a sewing/embroidery combo (with sewing as main usage) to start some projects and I have been looking around and I have narrowed down my choice between the Bernette b79 an the Bernina 590. There is quite a big price gap despite relatively similar functionalities from my understanding. Which one would you advise to someone like me ? Thanks for your help

That is a great choice that is what I would have advised. The 590 is an amazing machine but the b79 is much better suited for your needs I am sure. :) Hope you enjoy your new adventure...

Hello Hugues, I am now in the same situation as you. I hesitate between the Bernette B79 (2000 €) and a Bernina 590 (3600€ without the embroidery option / 4600€ with embroidery option) - Would you make the same choice today? - Were you satisfied with your B79? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

@@tubezak Hi Cedric, yes I think I would. I haven’t tried the Bernina but for an amateur with also other hobbies (I am not spending all that much time on the machine). I think if you spend the time to watch Cody’s videos and bernette’s tutorials this is a fairly easy machine to use. In term of function it doesn’t seem to lack compared to the bernina. I think there are less presser feet accessories but I am satisfied with their presser feet options (I got the additional set as well). The choice is probably down to how much you are going to use it. Overall I am very satisfied with it. I really don’t have any complaints. It’s strong, works fast and well, the interface is easy to use for anyone comfortable navigating through smartphones setups. There are plenty of tutorials available.

I am not familiar with Buckram, but your prior response to a question regarding that made me wonder if this machine is sturdy enough to sew Sunbrella or similar outdoor fabric. Also will the IDT work well for outdoor fabrics, fleece fabric or performance knits, or would it be best to also purchase a walking foot for this machine. Thanks for any assistance.
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 4 года назад
Hi, depending on how often you would be sewing outdoor fabric this machine should be able to handle it unless you'll be adding piping and multiple layers of heavy outdoor fabric. Also If outdoor fabric was what you will mainly be sewing then no I would not recommend this model. The IDT (bernette dual feed) works great for your everyday sewing with knits and complicated fabrics. I have not used it on outdoor fabrics. However there is no walking foot available for the the bernette 70 series. The IDT (bernette dual feed) is in the way.

Now that you have been using this machine for a while, is there a machine that you think might be better than this? Is there a machine that does better embroidery software?
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 3 года назад
I’ve found the only downside to this machine is it’s not as powerful as the BERNINA machines that drop in bobbin definitely has its limitations. If you try to sew or embroidery through thick fabric it doesn’t handle it well. Other wise it’s a wonderful machine and does a beautiful job. Especially for the price. 😍

My wife is looking at a Bernina 540 with the intention of adding embrodery capability when she can afford it. Will this machine offer all she needs for out of the box at a much lower price and what will she be sacrificing if she chose this less expensive option than the Bernina?
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 3 года назад
Sorry for the late reply it's been busy around here. Comparing the 540 and the b79 is difficult. I will start with the 540's pros... the 540 is a much more robust machine than the b79 it can sew and embroidery through more layers. The 540 does have a much larger bobbin which is great for embroidery you won't run out of bobbin nearly as quick. The touch screen and updateability on the 540 is nicer/ more responsive and has the potential. Also the touch screen is more vivid and detailed, for example the touch screen on the 540 shows the stitches to scale the b79 does not show them to the exact scale. Also the 540 in embroidery you have the free-arm available to you which is a nice feature when embroidering on t-shirts. The bernina 540 also has 100 different feet and accessories available for it the bernette has about a dozen different options. b79 however has the built in dual feed which is wonderful for feeding multiple layers of fabrics but won't allow for an actual walking foot if you wanted one. It also has a larger embroidery hoop that comes standard. The b79 is a 7mm stitch width machine so the decorative stitches can be 7mm wide where as the 540 is only 5.5mm wide max. Also the bernette has stitch plate auto recognition the 540 bernina you have to tell it what stitch plate you are using. I hope this helps better understand some of the differences. It is a tough decision especially with the price difference. if you have any other questions jut let me know. :)

I feel stupid, but on my bernette b79, I can't adjust the stich to show up on the display, it just shows a straight small line. No matter me moving the buttons. I would like to make my stich wider but it seems to be locked. TY
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 3 года назад
Sounds like you might have the straight stitch plate on (0mm). The machine knows what stitch plate you have one and it restricts what you can do. Also if you do have the 7mm stitch plate on then potentially your stitch width knob could be broken. :(

Can presser feet, such as Ruler foot 72, from a Bernina Artista 640 be used on this machine? Red labels , __C
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 3 года назад
Good question. No the BERNINA full shank feet such as the ones from the 640 can not fit on the bernette machines. These bernette machines take even different snap on feet from normal snap on feet because of the dual feed system.

Hi I have a few questions about this model: do you know if it comes with a regular walking foot, Quilting Foot not the darning one, and if it have BSR?
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 5 лет назад
Hi, so no it does not come with a walking foot (but available), if you are referring to the 1/4" foot as a quilting foot then no it does not and no the bernette machine can't use the BSR that is reserved for the BERNINA line. Sorry for so many no answers. But aside from the walking foot the other two are available. :)
