Spider-Man Theme (otherwise known as Spider-Farm) performed by Midtown arranged by Aaron Dale: • Spider-Farm - Midtown
This song got a 97.0% score!!! (98.0 MUS 100.0 PER 93.0 SNG)
Subscribe to the Barbershop Harmony Society channel to see more videos like this one!! • Spider-Farm - Midtown
Notes: They tend to drift in pitch, so I had to make choices as to where I stayed true to where I thought they were supposed to be, and where I just jumped back down or up to where they actually are in pitch. But this is just a transcription, not the original sheet music, so it might not all line up perfectly.

Performance as in how they move and speak or Performance in how they sing? It's late at night so I'm skimming through the video but this doesn't seem to be too mucb special. I'll look over it better in the morning but I think I prefer the older pre-2000's voice that quartet's just don't have anymore. The first BHS quartets had a soft sound that sounded oh so nice, the quartets around the Buffalo Bill era had a harder attack than their predecessors and rung so loudly, the 1960's quartets started the same sound that would be used all the way up to somewhere in the 90's, and now here we are. I don't even know how to describe this voice but it rattles my ears to listen to. I listen to something like Mother of Mine by the Oriole Four and I'd take that any day over this (I understand that it's a studio recording and not a live one, so to give a live recording I'll give BHS's Mill Street Medley). I really don't want to sound like a debbie downer but I just love this art form so much and to see it change to a point where I can't listen to any new songs put out by quartets anymore is very sad.

If you have listened to barbershop this long you may have been aware of the The Most Happy Fellows. Intel Champs from 1977 if I remember correctly. Bob Hodge, tenor, was my Brother-in-law. He was phenomenal! I miss him and all the Haps greatly.

While I did get all the farm jokes, it was nice to have explanations for the rest so I could at least have a reference of what was going on. This performance was absolutely hilarious. @abydosianchulac2
@abydosianchulac2 Год назад
The performance score according to the guidelines send to include judging how affected the listener is by the performance (being amused, devastated, thrilled, etc.). I think I remember seeing mentions of authenticity of the performance as well as coherence of the performance, which is what really sticks for me. The other groups had great comedic performances, but this song was not just a compilation of references to those performances. It was overall a joke about a group of non-comedians playing clowns and messing up the jokes while the one actual comedian plays the straight man in the middle of the buffoonery. And as for authenticity, the other groups had a little bit of a wink and a nod campiness to their performances, whereas these guys went balls to the wall and kept (most) everything earnest, in the moment, and identifiably themselves. There's also the added directionality of KJ's "character" through the song, moving from bafflement to acceptance to concern as the expectations of him become more taxing towards the end. There's a full scene being performed here (for better or worse depending on who you ask), and I think that's what helped boost these guys up to the limit. (It's worth noting that the highest scores don't necessarily indicate a perfect performance, but that any mistakes or hiccoughs were so minor that they didn't detract from the experience of the performance.)

Great performance and funny - Although, I don't think it deserves the score it got, especially when compared with 'Cuddle Up A Little Closer' from Platinum, which held the "top-scoring song" spot for ***many*** years. It scored 94.60 MUS, 97.80 PRS, 95.20 SNG, for 95.80 overall. The song was just under 3 minutes of super-tight singing with short breaks/gaps in the song. This one has a lot of comedy funnies, but it also gives the singers time to rest. That, and in 2000 when Platinum sang Cuddle Up, it was much harder to earn any scores in the 90s (the 2nd place QT got 89.34 full-contest, while Platinum got 93.92 overall). Listen closely to each guy in Platinum's performance and how spot-on each is. (I sang in a chorus under their Tenor, Gary Lewis - He expects no less than perfection). (More stats below) In 2015, the judges became more generous or relaxed with the scores, but that made it harder to really find that "diamond-in-the-rough" for the winner. In that year, Instant Classic "scored better" than Max Q, one of the tightest quartets ever (who won in 2007 after 3 previous 2nd-place finishes). And the other QTs that year, who sang the year prior (e.g. Forefront), jumped whole percentage points. End of longwinded post. Just my take.
