This video talks about a new prototype biochar generator we are testing on the Farm this spring. We made several loads of Biochar that are now fertilizing our crop in the High tunnel. This is our first video on the long-term project.

Awesome...we are looking at doing something similar...well done! Any updates on the unit / other videos? Curious how much you get out of each run, how much you've produced to date, things you'd change now that you've worked with it? We may have the opportunity to work with a local university and their Ag Engineering team as a project for their students in the creation of a unit. Great job!

Really nice unit, that is alot for only 1drum at a time. The same can be done with alot less expense and fab work. But I'll test one for a year for them for free.

From my research. You have made Charcoal. It does not become Biochar until it has been soaked in a rich diversified mixture of different organic fertilizers like sea weed, and animal manures. Am I wrong?

Yes, you are 100% correct in your thinking. You need to get the biological activity going. In my particular case on the farm, we overwinter 600 layers in the three high tunnels leaving a significant amount of activated manure already in the soil. In addition, we use the Zone products and one of the main ingredients that I use is their Kelp-grow. So overall I was impressed with the ease of production of the charcoal to be converted into biochar utilizing this system.

From what I understand charcoal and biochar are two totally different things, because they are produced differently and have different properties. Both of them can be activated, but obviously they are activated in different ways and for different reasons. Biochar with nutrients and microbes to increase soil fertility. And charcoal by heating with certain gases or steam, after which you can use it for water filtration or medicinal purposes.

Very nice can you capture the excess heat to heat water for maybe an outdoor pool or a house usage?
