I think it just proves Brennan's point about "always trying your best no matter what" being the right stance.

I swear the whole operation of Game Changer is a cover for Sam to do everything he can to teach Brennan that he doesn't need to win everything he ever does It's a fair effort.

I'm pretty sure they rigged it so Brennan would come in 2nd. Just like the episode where the rule was "Brennan cannot win". Sam loves nothing more than poking fun at Brennan's deep-seated need for rules and fairness in everything. Brennan is Lawful Good. Sam is Chaotic Good.

I have a feeling they’ve had this in their back pocket since the beginning, and only use the part after the swell for most episodes

At first I wondered why the usual fanfare didn't play as Brennan was crowned, and then it hit me: It was their SECOND BEST VICTORY SONG. After which we got the sentimental remix seguing into the familiar triumphant fanfare. Sound design can be overlooked at times, but I really enjoyed it here.

It has just come to my attention that the entire thing is the instrumental version of "You" by Harper Rey. Check it out!

No, that's his entire point. It's okay however it shakes out, if you're asked to compete against Usain Bolt in the 100m sprint you're not going to win, but as long as you really try your hardest you can and should be proud of yourself.

He tried his best and won, because he lost.

He's not objecting to being second because (in this case at least) he deserves second place. What he objects to is the degenerate perversion of a competition that Sam has birthed from his brain-womb for Brennan to behold, where winning the competition means you lose, and further, that he himself won due to losing the hardest.

No, that’s his whole thing. This episode really shows it. Brennan isn’t actually competitive, unless you count competing with himself. What he cares about it giving 100% every time, but since most people aren’t doing that it makes him look super competitive.

Never forget that Brennan used to be a camp counselor, and honestly I can totally see him giving this speech to a bunch of kids who lost a game.

That is in a traditional scoring system. THIS is a monument to devilry and chaos.

In a 3-way game, Brennan managed to come in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd all at once, depending on how you look at it.

I love this episode, and I wouldn’t change it. However, the idea of being in second place when two people finish ahead of you is completely ridiculous. I don’t mind ridiculous, but it is ridiculous.

That aspect of traditional scoring systems confuses and infuriates me.

@@JustBob9 Instead of the amount of people above you in the ranking, think of it as the amount of unique scores above you (Brennan has the second-highest score, he comes in second place, simple as that)

As far as I've gathered, he started DM-ing DnD games for kids at summer camp yeeeeaaaars ago, and he's studied a decent amount of philosophy. So, he understands what people go through as he chaperoned a bunch of kids from all different background, and he's studied why it matters and why WE matter. I think it's part of why him playing parents of characters on Dimension 20 is always so heart-wrenchingly beautiful.
