The $220 US extruder from Canada is actually awesome. To keep it from leaking that much you just have to tighten the lag bolts more. Cleaning is not bad with a putty knife and the large (grout type) sponge, although being able to take it off the wall would be handy. Brent is a great product, however if you are on a budget -do what you gotta do!

I have that one and love it!! And you can buy a small used kiln and a slab roller with how much MORE MONEY Amaco charges!! They just add zeros because of the name!! Refuse to even use their glazes!!

Our Lab Tech at UCSB that ran the studio space and made life so much easier for all the students went one step further and mounted the extruder to a rolling frame he built himself.

Your old extruder is also great. I've had one for ten years and it works well in our shop. One big plus is how easy it is to make your own dies. All you have to do to stop the spilling is tighten it down more. This truly is a great extruder. It's easy to throw shade when you get an expensive replacement for free. Keep up the good work but remember that most of us are on a tight budget.

Thank you so much for your extruder review. I need one. I didn't know which one to get. I'll definitely consider this one. To be able to slide it out of the way and easy clean are major considerations for me!

How funny at 5:20. I was watching video and thought no you need to mount it next to the door because then you can still use the wall space for storage cabinet or art or whatever. You fixed it. Cool. Great minds think alike because that is exactly where I saw you should put it. Double beam and saved space not obstructing door, path, light switch, or wall space. Good job and thank you. I’m glad I found you. I have just acquired a ceramics, glass, and lapidary shop. I took ceramics in high school and college but never deep enough to be a kiln builder or kiln runner so I have a huge learning curve in front of me and your a huge help.

Hey John congrats on your new Extruder, I use the same one although yours has the new lock feature (the yellow thingy ;) ). Tip!!!!!!!!: for keeping the barrel clean is bag the clay first like in a bag for bread loafs (so save those empty loafbread bags they are the perfect shape and size). You are really making just a big coil, bag it, de-air it by rubbing the air out so that the bag sticks to the clay and just twist it close by twirling the open end of the bag with your fingers...kinda like making a ringlet with a baggie haha. Now before inserting it into the Extruder make or cut a slit in the bottom of the bag (which is facing down). The twisted end will be facing upward and will be pushed closed by the pressure plate. Now extrude away until all the clay is out ( you'll have some clay left). Take the bag out and put in a new one. Your barrel should be relatively clean. Saving you clean-up time. Please share this method in a new video and all I ask is a shout-out haha. By the way this tip comes all the way from Paramaribo, Suriname, South America. Love your videos!

So when I received the notification of the new video, I loudly exclaimed “Oh man, I am so jelly!” Because let’s face it, I am totally so jelly! I fell for that exact extruder at NSECA, but momma can’t afford that right now. I look forward to seeing you use and explore, so that when I can afford, it’ll be a cake walk.

I purchased a shiny new 5" super duper clay extruder AND expansion box❗ I noticed you mounted yours about the height of your door. I'm 5'1", I'll probably have a 2-inch clearance from the floor by the time I mount mine.. 🤣😂..😜.. thanks for the video it helped a lot 💜

Just found this and wanted to mention two ways to make cleaning this extruder faster, easier and with less mess. Use an oversized sponge and push it through; or put Saran (spell) wrap around your clay. Weird and tricky to do until you try it a few times. It takes a few times to make it work and is very helpful if you want to switch between dies or clay colors. And yes, being able to take the main part over to the sink to quickly clean it up is helpful. On another type of extruder it helped to have a block of wood that fit above the clay to allow pushing it all the way down to the dye/die instead of having some left in. (Haven’t used one for years so not sure if using a block that fits inside the extruder will help with this design.) Love love love your work, especially where elements - fire, water, air & minerals combine and kinda duplicate what we seen in nature on a big scale reduced and conveyed in your cups on a smaller scale. 🤗

I have used several extruders, over the years, at various places. They all have their pros and cons. I like Brent for the collar, that hold the die. It's easy to put on and take off. I disliked the old "yoke" system that created the leverage, for the plunger. I have not uses their new system, on the model you have. I also do not like the models, where you have to wingnut on the die. Just takes too long. I also don't like plungers that are locked to the tube, as it makes cleaning more difficult. I'm personally a fan of Scott Creek extruders. The plunger has a "rung" system, which works well, and the collar is easy to take off/ put on, though not quite as easy as Brent. For your handles, you can design a few of your own, with that blank die. A jewelr's saw works well to cut out the shape... Orrrr if you know someone with a plasma cutter or CNC machine, you could design them digitally and have them cut out that way. As I commented on, in your handle making video, there is nothing wrong with extruded handles. Some even believe they are stronger than pulled handles l, as the clay particles are compressed together, during their creation. Happy Extruding!
@morganlewis2667
@morganlewis2667 4 года назад
Not noticeably true about strength and I've done thousands extruded and pulled. Handles fail at attachment points most often in drying.

Hi Jon, It's Anne from Bracker's Good Earth Clays in Lawrence, KS. We sell AMACO/brent® products and I suggested this extruder to one of my customers, Amy Meya - amymeya.com/ She found your video and it's mostly convinced her to buy the brent® Extruder HD. HOWEVER, she's used other extruders and has noticed sometimes the clay "sucks" the plunger in and makes it challenging to pull out. It's tough to explain, but I'm guessing you've experienced it too. I've noticed it happens more with especially sticky or wet clay. Anyway, I was hoping you could perhaps shoot and upload a short video with clay in the extruder and maybe pulling the plunger out to add more clay to show me and Amy Meya how it works with clay. Thanks so much and I love your video so much I added it to the Extruder page on my website. That will help people WAY more than dry text and a couple of photos. :-) Thanks! Anne

Here some free tips for you Mr. New Studio Clay Clown: forget the stupid framed glass idea. Put up a peg board and or shelves instead for the dies, cutoff tool, etc. and a shelf or table below that to hold boards for the extrusions. Get "The Extruder Book" to help expand your imagination beyond handles. Make or modify your own dies so they aren't the same as every hobbyist or student. Pick up better (more professional) vocabulary than "Thingy". Join a Facebook group to help your growth in extruding. Good fortune, endurance and success to you.

SO very disappointed to hear tips on keeping the inside clean. I have an extruder and I was thinking it was time to upgrade it (it works perfectly) but its so much bother to clean (ten to fifteen minutes), which isn't all that long, but I was thinking of specking out the extra cash to save that time - I'm 66 and time is very precious to me now as I don't know how much of it I've got left with high blood pressure problems. I'd rather spend the time making than cleaning up. It does seem as though this very fundamental problem hasn't been solved by this revision of the extruder. I was hoping by now that slot in parts dropping the barrel into a fixed barrel guide perhaps, using gravity and a top lock would mean there was a removable, cleanable part. Such a shame, I'll stick with my old one for now and keep hoping for an engineering genius to sort this problem out before my time is up....
