Stuart's Recent POTA and WWFF Activation: A Resounding Success
In amateur radio, few things are as exhilarating as a successful Parks on the Air (POTA) and World Wide Flora and Fauna (WWFF) activation. Recently, Stuart achieved just that with his activation at CA-5268 and VEFF-2271. Armed with his trusty Yaesu FT-891 and an End-Fed Half-Wave (EFHW) antenna from myantennas.com, Stuart made a remarkable 133 QSOs (contacts) running Single Side Band (SSB).
Preparation and Setup
Stuart's choice of equipment played a crucial role in the success of his activation. The Yaesu FT-891 is a compact yet powerful HF transceiver, renowned for its reliability and performance in the field. Paired with the EFHW antenna, known for its ease of deployment and excellent performance on multiple bands, Stuart was well-prepared to tackle the challenges of field operation.
Upon arriving at CA-5268 and VEFF-2271, Stuart quickly set up his station. The EFHW antenna was strung between his POYOTA pick up truck and one of the trees, ensuring a good height and orientation for optimal signal propagation. The FT-891 was connected to a portable power source, and within minutes, Stuart was ready to hit the airwaves.
Band Conditions and Challenges
Band conditions on the day of the activation were less than ideal but not impossible. Propagation was variable, with some bands showing more promise than others. Despite these challenges, Stuart's experience and skill as an operator shone through.
He started on the 15-meter band, often a reliable choice for daytime activations. The band was moderately busy, but Stuart managed to carve out a precise frequency and began calling CQ POTA and WWFF. His first few contacts came quickly, providing a much-needed boost of confidence.
Making Connections
As the day progressed, Stuart moved between the 20-meter, 40-meter, and 17-meter bands, adapting to the changing conditions and maximizing his chances of making contacts. His perseverance paid off, and he soon found himself in the middle of a small pile-up, with operators from across North America and even Europe eager to make contact.
One of the highlights of the activation was connecting with several of his ham radio friends. These QSOs were particularly special, as they provided an opportunity to catch up and share the excitement of the activation. The camaraderie and shared passion for amateur radio were palpable, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the day.
Reflecting on Success
By the end of the activation, Stuart had made an impressive 133 QSOs. This achievement is a testament to his skill as an operator and the reliability of his equipment. Each contact was logged meticulously, ensuring that every operator who contacted CA-5268 and VEFF-2271 would receive their well-deserved acknowledgment.
In reflecting on the activation, Stuart expressed his gratitude for the support and enthusiasm of the amateur radio community. Despite the less-than-perfect band conditions, the activation was a resounding success, filled with memorable contacts and a sense of accomplishment.
Conclusion
Stuart's recent POTA and WWFF activation at CA-5268 and VEFF-2271 is an inspiring example of what can be achieved in amateur radio. Even challenging band conditions can be overcome with the right equipment, a bit of preparation, and a lot of perseverance. Stuart's 133 QSOs are a testament to his dedication and passion for the hobby, and they stand as a reminder of the joy and connection that amateur radio brings to operators worldwide.

Looks like you had another successful outing. I just learned from your activation and a little research that Lepreau Falls CA-5260 is just inside of the CA-5085 Stonehammer Global UNESCO Geopark boundary. I activated Lepreau Falls last weekend by hunting. Now when I go there, as I'm in the area most weekends throughout the summer I have a 2fer to offer. Guess it is time to start calling CQ. The NB activator list now has grown by one. Maybe there's 6 or 7 of us now. 73 de VE9NHS

Welcome to our small club...make sure you always activate POTA and WWFF...often the parks will overlap. WWFF only lets you do one park at a time, no 2fers

@@outnaboot Thanks Stuart, I looked into WWFF but haven't sign-up yet. I need to do that.

@@heathstillman4986 Awesome, most POTA activators fail to also leverage WWFF as an excellent source for contacts. You need 44 to activate versus 10, and email your logs to Len, VE9MY.

How many parks in NB? AB has a bit over 400. I think you get an award for activating them all.

I think we have around 400 ish...some of them will never get activated due to how hard it is to get to them. Need a boat or a helicopter
