The Cannondale SuperSix EVO has been a popular race bike for 10 years and it's easy to see why, but is the new generation 4 model with all its improvements a step in the right direction to continuing that popularity. I've been riding the bike and in this review share my opinion on what the bike is really like plus highlight some likes and dislikes and whether it's worth buying, plus a little comparison to the Specialized Tarmac SL8

The styling of road bikes from roughly 2010-2016 was so good, there are so many bikes from that period that are absolutely beautiful much like this Super Six Evo.

Yes...I'm still riding a 2014 Super Six EVO with no plans of buying a new bke any time soon. I think The Super Six Evo's of that period were at least a year or 2 ahead of their time compared to the competition. In 2023, it still looks like a "modern" bike and performance-wise, it's been and still is stellar. By the way, I have upgraded the bottom bracket with a module from BBifinite.
@fiLthy_Rx
@fiLthy_Rx 6 месяцев назад
@@markn4526 Definitely don't need to upgrade from that. The Super Six EVO in particular from that period is so much better looking than the latest iterations with the dropped seat stays, same with the Tarmac SL5 from that era, even the TREK Madone -- they were all superior from an aesthetic standpoint IMO.
@markn4526
@markn4526 6 месяцев назад
@@fiLthy_Rx I've never liked the look of the dropped seat stays either. I recall when they were initially introduced there were infrequent occurrences where the seat tube would crack just above the seat stay/seat tube juncture because there wasn't enough support on larger-sized frames. I'm sure that has been remedied by now.

You can still get Gen 4 Supersix Evo 3 with 105 di2, slightly heavier, but has the same geometry and then you can slowly upgrade it with better wheels and handlebar of your liking. With those slow upgrades, it will still be cheaper and you get almost the same frame as Hi-Mod.

@@Chimy1423 100% agree! I used to ride an endurance frame with 9 speed for about 10 years. Yes, there were some gains with my new bike, but nothing astronomical that would drive me to spend extra 5K on Hi-Mod. Now if you want and are able to afford the bike, why not...life is short :)

After over a decade on a Specialized, I purchased this bike (w/ the Shimano groupset). I also swapped out the "aero" poor quality bottle holders. I would not have purchased the bike if Cannondale had not switched to the new bottom bracket. I have been very impressed and pleased with purchase.

In the US, the price for the Hi-Mod 1 with RED is $13.5K and the SL8 S-Works with RED is $14K. Between significantly lower weight and much more attractive finishes, that makes it a no-brainer for me. I imagine the wheels are better too. I'm actually about to hang up my 2014 Supersix for an S-Works SL8 (built up with Force), and I'm very excited. I love the look of "vintage" Cannondales. Whatever they're doing today just looks so cheap. The boring Helvetica typeface logo, the department store colors...it's so bland.

It’s a great bike, I’m on my 3rd Supersix, and have owned at least a dozen bikes. The reviewers are missing a big factor that this is a very comfy bike, taller stack and the only bike I’ve found that feels as quick as the SS while being not as aggressive as a Tarmac, etc is IMHO the Cervelo Caledonia 5. I’ve done some major rides and some pretty bad roads across the US, and have used 32c tires but always found 30c tires on the Supersix to be the sweet spot on some nice wide 25 internal wheels.

Having a threaded BB doesn't mean that your magically not going to have problems. If the BB shells are not within tolerance of alignment then setting up a chain set will be super tight and you'll be chewing through bearings within months of use.
@petedannatt

I looked at the geometry too. Its almost "endurance" which would suit me. With the separate bar / stem on lower models, up to 55mm of headset spacers and a Conceal stem thats even available in +6 degrees it seems it could be a very versatile bike. Has anyone tried setting it up Endurance style for longer rides?

hi there - I am thinking of buying this bike and at 57 years young i am definitely more interested in comfort these days - have you done any big long rides on it ? thinking of a Canyon endurace as well but much prefer a threaded bottom bracket. would love to hear your thoughts.
@chrisridesbicycles
@chrisridesbicycles 10 месяцев назад
I wonder why routing the cables through the headset bearing is considered better. With the old one, you could change the stem without re-routing all the cables.
@yonglingng5640
@yonglingng5640 9 месяцев назад
People want it because it looks cleaner, aesthetics is all such people care about (it even becomes a whining topic). Some even go as far as attempting to convert to this routing configuration on their bikes with regular internal routing and is a job I will never undertake for safety and liability reasons. Fast stem swaps are still possible for bikes with integrated internal routing, provided that the cockpit is a two-piece cockpit and the shift & brake lines don't route inside the stem. The third-generation Specialized Venge's cockpit is exactly like this, alongside the Tarmac SL7. The reason I don't like integrated internal routing is headset service turned cumbersome.

I've been riding this exact bike for the last few months and I absolutely love it. I can't get over how fast it is. According to my strava data, I'm going about 4% faster on it than my old bike for the same amount of power. The old machine was a 2018 Cannondale Synapse that I fitted with Enve Foundation 45 wheels and a nice aero carbon bar, and it felt like a good fast bike that I could comfortably take on fast group rides. My new SSE is in another league. A lot of people seem to discount the R-SL50 wheels on this bike, but I can only presume that they're a key part of the aero equation that makes this machine so much faster than my old one. The build one spec down (with the same wheels and frame) tests as very aero by Tour magazine (207W), and that is without the one-piece momo bar which is purported to save another 3W or so over the two-piece bar and stem on the Hi-Mod 2 build they tested. Anyway, I've been absolutely thrilled with it - it's been over 3 months and I'm still very much in the honeymoon phase where I feel a rush of joy every time I take it out for a ride!

'Threaded BB means no more creaking'.... I have a feeling that comment will come back and haunt you, especially as they are trying to cram 29mm axle through a 33mm hole, and a debonded BB shell is virtually irreparable. They should have just sorted the QC on the PF30.

@@BrunoStocovickCarbon bikes with threaded BB standards always use a BB shell that's bonded into the carbon frame. As there's a chance of the bond losing its hold, it won't last forever, more so if you subject the bike to harsh conditions and never take care of it. In this case, PressFit BB standards with tight tolerances (perfectly round holes + properly sized inner diameter) are superior.

Do we as a cycling community just accept that bikes are 10k+ and we just think it's normal to hear that in a review? Some hitting 15k for price. To touch on the last minute of the video, how much better are these bikes really getting to warrant that level of cash? Do people really go into a shop and throw down 15k and buy a bike? The aero jersey you had on during the review is doing more aerodynamically for you than the alleged 12w savings of the frame/system.

My take on this madness of price points on bikes has a lot to do with the rule that the GCI has that the bikes that the pros compete on has to be available to the public within 18 months or something. Just to keep the sport relevant to the public. All gear has to be commercially available. However. The pros do t care about consumers. They just want to win. They have to win. So they demand crazy bikes from the suppliers. And the sponsors develops bikes then. Therefore. They cost 20k now a days. It’s not the market that demands it. It’s the pros demand and then the rule that they have to be commercially available that drives this.

@@wsbygt The new Evo, according to marketing is 12-ish watts faster than the Evo 3 but it is still a bit slower than the SystemSix. I saw this also confirmed in a magazine recently. The System6 is old but still fast as hell (and a hard ride). Maybe we will see an upgrade but I doubt it.

Yeah Ben Healy and Magnus Cort are still using their system 6 (Healy goes back and forth between the two models) but the rest of the team ride mostly the SSE

Hmmmm. I think I agree with all of your criticisms except for the rectangular water bottles. I think those will be easy to get used to in a half dozen or so rides. These bikes are too expensive for me and I am a software engineer that makes about $100,000 USD per year! I'm looking at new brands from China like Winspace and Yoeleo.

Great bike, but not in stock untill mid 2024.. bought the SL8 last month, only 2 weeks from order to delivery. Cannondale needs to get their **** together or loose more potential buyers.

That blanking plate on the down tube looks awful. At that price you’re going to be using electronic shifting. Luckily that dog’s dinner of a stem cap takes your eye off it 🤦🏻‍♂️ the paint is a disaster too but at least they’ve done away with the pin of death in the head tube.

Cannondale just can't help themselves - so they've finally given up on pressfit BB's but are trying to replace that with a new non-round bottle standard instead 😂

Good luck if you have any issues, Cannondales customer service / warranty is nonexistent, life time frame warranty my arse, stick with Trek. / Specialized.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but this probably depends on where you're located. I've been lucky to live in an area with a good bike shop with regards to support and with good local Cannondale representation. Ideally you would pick a bike shop with good support. There's reasons why certain areas have lots of Trek bikes vs other brands. Likewise for Cannondale, or Specialized. I've had warranty issues with Cannondale and they've always been resolved in a timely manner thanks to my bike shop support. Trek and Specialized certainly make great bikes as well.

Do an honest road test. This gravel bike against the rim brake Evo. We all know the what the result will be. Problem is it would encourage people to keep their very light and rapid old bikes rather than 'upgrade', and we couldn't have that.

Just move on, keep the rim bike if you like it, get a modern bike if you like it. Just go and search for Tour magazine, they have all the data if you want comparison. Fact is "heavy disc brake" bike like aeroad has the best result ever. They are fastest by science, of course according by some bro science folks, they gonna reject the result and insist the other way around. They are not looking for scientific data, they are looking for an article that can support their point.

This bike doesn't have AI offset. And what is your complaint about upgrading? They can be upgraded. What would you want to upgrade that you can't?

Ai was MTB only. It was never a thing on the road bikes. With this year‘s MTB range, it was also removed on the MTB side.
